Jacksonville 18 Rochester 0
• Shuman 5⅓ IP, 11H, 8R, 8ER, 0BB, 2K, 2HR
• Grissom 1⅔ IP, 0H, 0R, 3BB, 2K
• House 1-4
• Arruda 0-1, 2BB
Jacksonville flirted with a perfect game for five and a 1/3rd innings and a no-hitter for six, which may have gone unnoticed as the Jumbo Shrimp hitters boiled the Red Wings throwers for 18 runs on 23 hits. Seth Shuman gave up the first eight tallies on eleven hits, including two homers. He walked none and struck out two. It was the fourth straight start with more runs allowed than innings pitched. J.T. Arruda drew a walk in the 6th to end the perfecto while Brady House singled to lead off the 7th and end the no-no. It was the only Rochester hit. Roster moves: Andrés Chaparro recalled to Washington; RHP Ryan Loutos optioned from Washington (waiver claim from the Dodgers).
Harrisburg 7 Chesapeake 6 (11 inn.)
• Choi 3IP, 2H, 4R, 4ER, 4BB, 2K
• Santos (BS, 2) 2IP, 3H, 1R, 1ER, 2BB, 3K, HR

• Stehly 2-4, R, HR, 2RBI
• McKenzie 1-4, SF, 2RBI
• Naranjo 1-4, R, SF, RBI
The Senators battled back from an early 4-1 deficit to take a 5-4 lead but a homer in the 8th forced extras. Harrisburg scored single runs in both the 10th and the 11th while Chesapeake could not answer to give the Sens a 7-6 win. Hyun-Il Choi was knocked from the box after three innings and four runs let in on two hits and four walks. He struck out two. Junior Santos gave up the aforementioned longball to suffer his second blown save. Garrett Davila got the last five outs to earn the win. Murphy Stehly singled, homered, and drove in two, as did Jared McKenzie on an RBI single in the 6th and a sacrifice fly in the 10th to lead the Harrisburg offense.

There were 20 zeroes on the Hub City scoreboard before Wilmington ended double shutout with two runs in the 11th for which the Spartanburgers could only answer with a single patt..er, run for a 2-1 Blue Rocks win. Jackson Kent turned in six scoreless innings with one hit and one walk while striking out six for both a no-decision and a quality start. Erik Tolman added three more goose eggs while Miguel Gomez allowed the lone, unearned Hub City run over the last two frames for the win. Sam Petersen singled twice, scored once, stole a base, doubled once, and drove in a run while Branden Boissiere singled and doubled to lead the Wilmington offense.

Fredericksburg trailed 5-0 after one and 9-3 after five and even got the tying run to 3rd in the 9th, but a whiff and a double play ended it for a 9-8 loss. Yoel Tejeda took the loss on seven runs allowed (five earned) on eight hits and a walk over four innings. He struck out three. Roismar Quintana singled three times and scored twice while Enmanuel Ramirez singled twice, tripled once, and drove in three – including the second and third FredNats hit by pitch. The first was Luke Dickerson, who was struck on the right wrist in his second plate appearance and left the game.

Eduardo Figuero went 3-for-3 with a double to lead the DSL Nationals hit column, followed by Marconi German with two safteies and a walk and a stolen base. The D-Nats hit into two double plays and had two runners caught stealing.
I tracked down the video Fred referred to from Eddie Longosz. It’s well worth a watch, Longosz talks about House, Morales, King, Sykora, Dickerson: https://www.mlb.com/nationals/video/eddie-longosz-on-the-progress-of-nats-top-prospects
On the Loutos pick up, this is excellent. Maybe Loutos is just another AAAA reliever, but the Nats have previously done such a good job of picking up free relief arms and giving them an extended chance, a luxury not available when you’re playing on the Dodgers or even Cardinals and in playoff contention (the two teams that DFA’d Loutos this year). We got Robert Garcia, Kyle Finnegan, Hunter Harvey (just to name the bigger successes) this way. And frustratingly, this season we’ve done less of this, recruiting instead of fringe major leaguers, guys struggling to stick in AAA. Hope with a bit more patience we can polish Loutos into something useful.
Speaking of patience, what the heck happened in Rochester last night?? The RRW coaching staff did Todd Peterson dirty. I know Peterson made his own bed in being unable to get anyone out, but that’s brutal leaving him in as long as they did. In case you didn’t see the box score, Peterson allowed 10 hits in 0.1 IP and 9 ER. 5 of those 10 hits were for extra bases, including a grand slam. When Peterson allowed the grand slam, he’d given up 6 runs at that point. And then they still left him in to face 4 more batters, who doubled, singled, singled and singled, before putting him out of his misery. The game was over at that point (Peterson entered the game trailing 8-0), but it’s going to take a very long time for him to get that ERA (currently at 21.00) back under 9.00.
Thanks for sharing the video link!
The Schumann Resonance affected everyone last night . Was I the only one seeing the red sky at night sailors delight sky in the skies over Dallas where I was .
RRW staff and Wash PD staff truly overreacted with the the effects of the Schumann Resonance which effects everyone differently especially those in player development micro managing .
May Todd Peterson land on his feet and restore his fine skills and Cajun Tiger personae!! Especially vs the Nats !
On a lighter topic I met a family with a young son who was wearing a Wash Nats red cap claiming Abram’s as his favorite ball player
I made a bet with him that when the Nats draft Holliday he will become his favorite .
Somebody in Rochester booth who plays the walk up music for players should have played for Charles Mack’s brother the old classic by Satchmo “ Mack the Knife “.
Jacksonville colors sure have a Creole color to their vibe
Player development question
Loutos makes the third arm Nats have scooped up out of the Dodger chain since January .
Who has the fondness or the old connections ?
Not hard to come across former Dodgers arms these days. When I talk about the Nats needing to churn through relievers, I’m not even suggesting we go nearly as far as Los Angeles. They’re already used 30 unique pitchers this season. The Nationals with our historically bad bullpen and handful of injuries in the rotation have used “only” 18 pitchers this season (which I actually think may be the fewest in MLB, without having looked at every team)
But it’s also why there’s a lot of guys available via waiver claims. Glad to see the team is finally dipping their toes into the waiver market this season. Better late than never!
It’s a good thing Jacksonville didn’t have much of a kicker and missed the extra points. Oy.
Murphy Stehly continues to look like Dale Murphy at AA after hitting .182 at A+ when he was promoted. He’s still riding .450 BABIP “luck,” but damn he’s riding it hard, all the way to a 217 wRC+ after 18 games. (For perspective, in 2024, Aaron Judge posted a 218.) In the pros, Stehly has played 3B, 2B, and 1B, and he spent a collegiate season in RF, so he’s got the whole utility bag of tricks.
It seems far fetched that he can maintain this onslaught, but here’s a fun bit of evidence:
Sr at Texas: .367/.424/.662/1.086
AA 18 gms: .367/.457/.633/1.090
He turns 27 in September and is Rule 5 eligible this winter. Let’s hope he keeps making hay while the sun shines.
Todd Peterson released.
