Robert Hassell reached base four times on three singles and a walk as did Darren Baker with a single, a double, and two walks as the Red Wings marched to 12-hit parade and drew six walks. Bryce Conley took the loss, his fourth, on four runs allowed on seven hits and two walks. He struck a season-high of eight. Seaver King was the only Harrisburg batter to collect multiple hits while Murphy Stehly drew three of the team’s four walks and was the only starter to not strike out on a 15-whiff night. Roster moves: RHP Mason Thompson assigned from Washington for MLB Rehab.
Asheville 3 Wilmington 2 (12 inn.)
• Sykora 5⅔ IP, 3H, 2R, 2ER, 4BB, 7K, 2PO @ 1B, 93-57 PIT-K

Wilmington and Asheville traded two-spots in the 1st and 4th respectively and zeroes until the 12th, when the Tourists crashed at home plate for deciding run in a 3-2 win over the Blue Rocks. Travis Sykora was stretched to 90+ pitches, though he walked a season-high of four and “only” struck out seven over five and 2/3rds innings of two-run ball. The loss went to Adam Bloebaum who pitched the 12th and gave up a walk and a hit to plate the free runner. Cortland Lawson singled three times while Caleb Lomavita singled twice and drove in a run. The rest of the lineup went 1-for-30. Roster moves: LHP Shinnosuke Ogasawara reassigned from the FCL for MiLB rehab.
Salem 7 Fredericksburg 2 – GM. 1

FredNats led 1-0 after their half of the 2nd but it was all Red Sox after that as Salem hung a 7-2 loss on Fredericksburg. Brayan Romero was knocked from the box in the 4th as he was strafed for nine hits and six runs (five earned) with one walk, one whiff, and one Robles. Cristhian Vaquero singled twice and tripled while Kevin Diaz hit a solo HR and Randal Diaz connected for an RBI single.

Salem completed the doubleheader sweep of Fredericksburg with a 1-0 shutout in the nightcap. Luke Johnson tossed four scoreless in his Low-A debut, giving up two hits and striking out two. Angel Roman gave up an unearned run—the fewest runs in his 12 appearances—but that was enough to lose for the fifth time. Nate Rombach and Carlos Tavares both reached base twice on a single and a walk while Randal Diaz rounded out the three-hit assault with a double. Roster moves: RHP Luke Johnson reassigned from the FCL; RHP Gavin Bruni stashed placed on the 7-Day I.L..

Dashyll Tejeda delivered the tying run in the 8th and the winning run in the 10th as the F-Nats edged the F-Astros, 3-2. Gabriel Agostini made his first appearance of the season and worked around a walk in his lone inning pitched. Liam Sullivan turned in two goose eggs in his third rehab appearance. The win went to Doimil Perez despite two errant pickoffs, two walks, and a wild pitch that let in the free runner. Roster moves: LHP Gabriel Agostini assigned from Fredericksburg for MiLB rehab.
Sykora, what a bum. Allowing an extra base hit and earned runs! But seriously, it’s funny how Sykora’s worst outing in ages is a… 5.2 IP, 2 ER, 7 K performance! That’d be the best start of the year for the majority of our SPs. Perhaps most impressive is Sykora picking off two baserunners in the game. I’d noticed that Sykora hadn’t been paying much attention to baserunners this season. IIRC, he had allowed 6 SB on 11 total players allowed on base. So it sounds like, as suspected, he was focusing more on mechanics than an inability to limit SB attempts. Also, wow, they let him go 93 pitches! He’s gone from 62 to 79 to 93 in successive starts. It appears the training wheels are off now. Longosz had said that once they did this, expect to see him in Harrisburg. I wonder if we’ve just seen his last game in Wilmington?
So good to see a bunch of injured arms returning. Thompson, Ogasawara and now Agostini! Their services are much needed.
And congrats to Luke Johnson on a stellar full season ball debut. The 10th rounder from UMBC, is sporting a 1.00 ERA on the season through 27 IP!
Not sure how accurate the strike zone grid is on the milb.com “Gameday” site, but it shows Sykora was the victim on horrible ball/strike calls on his walks. It’s Class A for umps too.
Here’s some leaders

4. L. Johnson FCL/FBG 4.33
5. Bloebaum FBG/WMT 4.25
Not counting House (.873 OPS when called up) and Lile (.880), the Nats only have two players with OPS over .800, which is disheartening. Stehly isn’t really thought of as a prospect, and Feliz is years away.
Not counting Sykora (1.30 ERA in 34.2 IP), they only have one starter with an ERA under 3.00. That said, it’s great that their top healthy pitching prospects (Sykora, Clemmey, Cavalli) are all showing well in general.
House is certainly looking more comfortable than I expected. rarely chasing and barreling up a lot. I guess he is used to hitting against AAA pitchers, something his teammates are struggling with.
Johnson gets ’em out with command, not velocity. not sure how much longer he’ll go but good for him.
Vacquero can look awful at times, trying to yank everything in game two as a RHB. he hits for no power from that side, I’d be tempted to have him give up switch hitting. more time to work on one stroke and approach.
