• House 2-4, BB, 2B(15), 2RBI
• Nuñez 2-4, R, RBI
Seth Shuman did not throw the complete-game shutout required by the Red Wings. Instead, he merely turned in a quality start of three runs over six innings. Rochester’s offense kept pace with Jacksonville’s, even tying the game in the bottom of the 9th after falling behind in the top of the 9th as Drew Millas singled, stole second, and scored on Nasim Nuñez’s RBI single. Alas, they could not repeat the feat in the 10th as losing pitcher Parker Dunshee gave up another run in his second inning pitched to lose the game, 5-4. The Red Wings remain 0-for-June.
Chesapeake 6 Harrisburg 5 (10 inn.)
• Choi 4IP, 4H, 4R, 4ER, 2BB, 5K, 2HR

• DeShields 2-4, R, BB
• McKenzie 2-4, 2R, SB
• Naranjo 2-5, RBI
Harrisburg twice trailed by three runs (3-0, 5-2) but tied it in the 8th and took it into extras… where Chesapeake was able to push across the free runner when the Sens could not to take the finale, 6-5 and earn a series split. Hyun-Il Choi only lasted one more inning than last time as the BaySox got to him for four runs again on four hits (two HR) and two walks. He struck out five. Junior Santos worked around a walk in the 9th but not a Kevin Made error in the 10th as Chesapeake cashed in the free runner on a one-out single following an intentional walk and a strikeout. Delino DeShields Jr., Jared McKenzie, and Joe Naranjo each had two singles and combined for three runs scored to pace the Senators offense.
Wilmington 3 Hub City 2
• Bennett 2IP, 0H, 0R, 1BB, 2K, PO @ 1B
• Tolman (W, 1-1) 3IP, 2H, 1R, 1ER, 3BB, 2K, BK

• Brown 2-4, R, 2B
• Lomavita 2-4, RBI
The Blue Rocks survived four infield singles and a double to sneak past the Spartanburgers and complete the six-game sweep. Jake Bennett emerged from witness protection to throw two scoreless innings, walking one and striking out two. Meanwhile, Wilmington got single runs in the 1st and 2nd innings. Erik Tolman allowed the first Hub City run over three to earn the win. Samuel Vasquez picked up the save despite allowing the second Spartanburger run on the aforementioned five hits, aided by a double play. Marcus Brown singled and doubled and scored a run while Sam Petersen, Cortland Lawson, and Chad Lomavita each singled twice in the Blue Rocks’ 10-hit, one-walk offense.

• Cranz (SV, 7) 1IP, 0H, 0R, 0BB, 2K
• Bazzell 2-3, R
• R. Diaz 2-3
In the opener, the FredNats capitalized on two-run error in the top of the 7th to clip the Woodpeckers, 2-1. Davian Garcia turned in his second quality start, allowing a solo HR and a walk over six innings while striking out six. Robert Cranz retired the side in order with two whiffs to pick up his seventh save. Kevin Bazzell and Randal Diaz both went 2-for-3 while Christhian Vaquero doubled to round out the five-hit, no-walk offense.
Fredericksburg 8 Fayetteville 4 – GM. 2

Aelxander Meckley spun five innings of one-run ball on three hits, no walks, and two whiffs. Nick “Power to the” Peoples led the FredNats hit column with two singles and a double followed by Nate Rombach and Roismar Quintana both went 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored.
FCL Nationals, 18-10, 1st place FCL East, 1½ GA
A five-game win streak has pushed the F-Nats into 1st place in the FCL East. This week, it’s road games today, Thursday, and Saturday, with home games on Wednesday and Friday.
DSL Nationals, 5-5, 4th place, DSL South, 4GB
The DSL Nationals lost three of five last week to fall back to .500 with the run differential of +1. Like the FCL Nationals, the D-Nats are on the road three times this week, including today, Thursday, and Friday, and home tomorrow and Saturday.
House and Lile promoted to the Show, per Zuck…
https://www.masnsports.com/blog/entry/source-house-lile-promoted-after-hassell-tena-optioned-to-triple-a
I strongly believe House’s debut was moved forward a few weeks/month to counteract the pretty bad vibes surrounding the DC club at the moment, especially with how Longosz and House himself have recently been talking about his promotion schedule. But with that said, he deserves it. It’s been an all around impressive season to date. Hope he can make the most of it!
Re: Lile and Hassell. I don’t get it. Why send down Hassell and re-promote Lile? What has changed of their assessment of the two over the last week? Lile has been, if anything, playing a bit worse since his demotion, and Hassell is still doing his no-walk, light hitting show that he was in his first two weeks up.
Really good to see Jake Benentt re-emerge for like the dozenth time from Witness Protection. Guy must be a spy in his personal life…
What does Robert Cranz need to do to earn a promotion? He last allowed a run (earned or unearned) 55 days ago on April 23. Since then he’s gone 15 games and 18 IP and allowed ridiculously only 2 hits, 6 BB (0.44 WHIP) and 29 K!! These are Sykora-esque numbers but from the pen. At age 22, he’s not exactly a spring chicken. Get him a stiffer challenge, stat.
And Sam Petersen keeps Sam Petersen’ing. Another multi-hit game. His line is now at .378/.477/.541
something tells me the Lile vs Hassell decision is more about sending a message. a while back Young talked about prospects acting like they belonged before they earned it. I always thought he was talking about Hassell.
Interesting. I know it’s not a very accurate representation, but Hassell has done a number of interviews, and he’s always come across as somewhat introspective and thoughtful. He didn’t strike me as the big ego type (though maybe a minor leaguer with distinctly mediocre performance giving multiple interviews to big media orgs is in itself a sign of an ego? A stretch, maybe.)
Harrisburgers, Rochestertons, and Wilmingtonians, any read on Hassell’s attitude from watching him?
LM’s comment below certainly flips my speculation on it’s head
Hard to find anyone worse than Hassell.
21 games; 79 PA: .218 AVG .228 OBP (that is not a misprint) .269 SLG (again not a misprint).
Over that span:
-One walk (which is almost impossible; makes Keibert Ruiz look like Wade Boggs0
– Two extra basehits (that’s worse than an NL pitcher when they used to bat).
Hassell was also negative zone runs as an OF (-8 in 21 games).
As bad as Hassell’s numbers are, he was regressing: .105 BA over the last week. The Nats have a ton of problems, but Hassell was clearly in his over head and needed a reset. Absolutely pointless to keep him on the MLB roster.
On Lile’s promotion, who else do they have to bring up? You can look at the major league level, AAA, and AA, and you don’t see a whole lot there. Dave Martinez has supposedly done a terrible job with all the wonderful talent he was given, but look at the position players, look at the starting pitchers, and look at their relief pitchers. Do you see a wealth of talent there?
only recently did I notice what a big kid Peoples is. he’s got a .964 OPS for the first half of June. fingers crossed that he’s found it.
Sens and Baysox went extras in 4 of their 6 games.
House deserves the promotion. Not sure what to make of the Lile and Hassell moves. Interesting comment about Young. At spring training, Young was playing in a minor league intrasquad game. Players around us were saying that once Young got called up, he changed and wouldn’t even acknowledge the minor leagers.
Geez, that’s a bad look for Young.
What is the source on Young’s attitude?
Every time I had any interaction with Hassell while he was in Harrisburg, he was always very polite. He even spent time talking with the “crazy” fans rather than just blowing them off.
I also had good interactions when talking with Hassell in Harrisburg.
