Rochester busted out for four in the 5th, highlighted by an Earl Weaver Special off the bat of Andrés Chaparro. Cade Cavalli answered with his fifth goose egg and left with a 4-0 lead. Konnor Pilkington handed over his beer and walked three of five batters faced. Holden Powell came on with a 4-1 lead to protect and, but for Daylen Lile throwing out a runner to end the 6th, blew the save. He completed the meltdown with an assist from Phil Dunshee as the two combined to walk five and let in the winning run, 5-4 to complete Worcester’s six-game sweep.

The Senators got single runs in the 4th, 5th, and 7th innings and took the game, 3-1, and the series, 4-2 from the Fightins. Riley Cornelio walked four and gave up two hits but also struck out six and kept Reading off the board for his first AA win. Daison Acosta struck out two in the 9th to earn the save, his first of ’25. Delino DeShields Jr. singled twice and drove in one as did Joe Naranjo, who reached base three times on a single and two walks and stole a base to pace the Harrisburg offense.

Caleb Farmer’s two-out, two-run HR in the bottom of the 9th tied the game at 4-4 to force extras. Marcus Brown singled on the 5th pitch he saw in the 10th to send in the free runner and seal the 5-4 win. Andry Lara emerged from witness protection to throw three innings, allowing an unearned run on three hits with no walks and two whiffs. Jared Simpson gave up two unearned runs to lose a 2-1 lead while Austin Amaral gave up a run to push the Brooklyn lead to 4-2. Samuel Vasquez retired the side in both the 9th and the 10th and picked up the win, his first of the season. Roster moves: RHP Andry Lara assigned from Rochester for MiLB rehab.

Frederickburg snapped a 1-1 tie with two runs in the 7th and held on for a 3-1 victory, which clinched their first series win since April. The rally came too late for starter Andrew Meckley, who notched his first career quality start with six innings of one-run ball on three hits, no walks, and seven whiffs. Frank Bruni, Merritt Beeker, and Robert Cranz each put up a goose egg with Bruni earning his third win and Cranz garnering his fifth save while extending his scoreless innings streak to 16 across 13 appearances. Nick “Power to the” Peoples tied the game with an RBI single in the 4th, Yoander Rivero broke the tie with a sac fly and Cristhian Vaquero got the insurance run with another RBI single to cap off the FredNats scoring.

The F-Nats took two of three in a four-game week that was shortened by a rainout. This week, it’s another four games in seven days with home games today and Wednesday, and road games on Thursday and Saturday.
DSL Nationals, 3-2, T2nd place, DSL South, 1GB
The DSL Nationals are above .500 but the run differential is the minimum of one (28-27). The D-Nats are home today, tomorrow, and Friday, off on Wednesday, and on the road on Thursday and Saturday.
Cavalli’s outing was just what I was looking for from him. challenge and get ahead with a well placed 96-98 fastball and mix in his off speed stuff to get swing and miss. only 63 pitches to go 5 innings.
as soon as he goes past 80 pitches he’s coming up.
Sounds like Cavalli isn’t coming up until the beginning of July to extend the time before he is arb and FA eligible.
Kevin Made showing some signs of life on City Isle. at 22 and hitting .277 in AA that’s at least respectable. with King there he’s not going to get a lot of starts at SS. can he play 3rd to show value as a utility bench player.
good to see Nunez back at Rochester. for all the flashes he provides he needs to play every day if he’s going to improve
with Wilmington’s poor MiLB.tv product it was hard to see what Lara had in the way of stuff but at least he’s back in action. one fastball was announced at 93 so that’s not far off his norm.
I’m not sure how far Cranz can go with his two pitch repertoire but it’s time to find out
Caleb Lomavita is the Nats top catching prospect, and he is having a decent/solid offensive season (.734 OPS) considering he plays half his games at Wilmington.
That said, Lomavita made his 10th error yesterday. He has played 33 games at catcher this year. 10 errors in 33 games at catcher (or any position, but particulary catcher) is historically awful. Also, his CS rate isn’t great either (22%), Lomavita’s CS is significantly below the Blue Rocks other catchers (Matt Suggs 35% and Caleb Farmer 33%); so, it does not appear to be a failure of the Wilmington staff to hold runners on.
To me the biggest problem with the Nats’ extended commit to Keibert Ruiz is that he’s mediocre offensively, but just a horrible defender by every metric. Concerning that Lomavita appears to be trending in that direction too.
This has been a problem as long as I’ve been running this site. The Nats are OBSESSED with getting offense from the catcher and in complete denial as to how much poor defense hurts the team.
How many times did Wilson Ramos botch a throw from the outfield? Doesn’t show up in the stats, except for an additional run for the pitcher.
How many times did Raudy “El Tamiz” Read let a ball get past him or allow a base runner to move up 90′ and take away a DP chance while moving a guy into scoring position. At a minimum, that forced pitchers to throw more pitches, if not reduce their confidence to throw anything that might not be right down the middle of the plate.
Agree, and seems like the philosophy applies to multiple positions. The Nats tried Luis Garcia at SS, which was an embarrassment. He’s still rough at 2B. Consistently one of the worst defensive franchises.
What in the world is happening to Chad Walllace? He went from what I read as being near MLB ready (albeit set back by injuries) to completely lost cause
