Opening Day!

April 4, 2025

Team Yesterday Today Pitching Matchup (’24 Stats at the level for AA and below)
Rochester Lost, 8-1;
Lost, 3-1
vs. Lehigh Valley, 6:05 p.m. Alvarez (0-0, 0.00) vs. Se. Johnson (1-0, 0.00)
Harrisburg @ Erie, 6:05 p.m. Luckham (6-10, 5.06) vs. Melton (7-8, 5.10)
Wilmington @ Brooklyn, 6:40 p.m. Clemmey (A+ debut) vs. N. Hall (0-2, 10.50)
Frdericksburg @ Carolina, 6:30 p.m. Polanco (7-4, 4.06) vs. Hostetler (pro debut)

Lehigh Valley 8 Rochester 1
• Choi (L, 0-1) 4IP, 5H, 3R, 3ER, 2BB, 5K
• Alston 1⅔ IP, 0H, 0R, 1BB, 1K
• House 2-3, R, HR, RBI
• Yepez 1-3, 2B

Lehigh Valley got to Rochester three in the 3rd then piled on five in the 7th as they pounded Rochester, 8-1 in the opening game. Rule 5 pick Hyun-il Choi gave up the aforementioned three on five hits and two walks over four innings while striking out five. Brady House broke up the shutout with a solo HR in the 5th as the Red Wings offense pestered the Iron Pigs for six hits and did not take a walk.

Lehigh Valley 3 Rochester 1
• Solesky 3IP, 5H, 1R, 1ER, 1BB, 2K, HR
• Pilkington 1IP, 1H, 1R, 0ER, 1BB, 2K
• Lipscomb 2-3, 2B
• F. Cordero 1-3, 2B, RBI

Franchy Cordero’s RBI double in the 1st to tie it at 1-1 would be the highlight of the game as the IronPigs added single runs in the 4th and 5th to complete the doubleheader sweep, 3-1. Chase Solesky got the spot start and gave up a run on a homer and five hits total over three innings for the no-decision. Konor Pilkington lost for the second time in as many appearances on an unearned run “thanks” to Trey Lipscomb’s error on a missed catch with two outs. Lipscomb was the sole Rochester batter to reach base twice (single, double) as the Red Wings mustered seven hits and one (1) walk on offense.

Harrisburg Senators
While we don’t have the official press release yet, longtime Senators beat writer Mick Reinhard reports via his Mayflies & Big Flies substack that Luckham will be followed by Dustin Saenz, Jarlin Susana, and Seth Shuman, with Jose Atencio slated to piggyback with Susana. It seems odd that the Nats would be committing a rotation spot to a 27-y.o. but this may be a function of his recovery from Nats elbow.

Wilmington Blue Rocks
Wilmington opens on the road in Brooklyn. Unlike last year, there’s no team preview… but if you like cheesy media day pics, they’ve got you covered.

Fredericksburg Nationals
The FredNats open on the road in Zebulon, NC for the second-to-last time, as the Mudcats are slated to move east in 2026 and become the Wilson WarBirds. Fredericksburg plays within its division for 108 games vs. 24 against the Carlolina League’s southern division. They will not play the Hickory Crawdads, which swapped places with the Hub City Spartanburgers (formerly the Down East Wood Duck), nor the Augusta GreenJackets in the regular season.

Soroka to the IL. Jackson Rutledge promoted. Soroka was slated to start Sunday.

Wow, we’ve already had as many injuries to the rotation as we did all last season…

But more importantly, does this mean Lord will be moved to the rotation?? Or have they already backtracked on the Rutledge-in-relief experiment?

  4. Pilchard says:

Lord would need to be stretched out, but wouldn’t be surprised if he takes Soroka’s spot for now (could see Rutledge paired with Lord if the Nats gets length out of Irvin and and Parker today and tomorrow).

Please leave Rutledge in the ‘pen and let him develop there. I really like the idea of him being able to be a Stammen-like two-inning guy.

I know Lord had some multi-inning appearances in spring training, but I can’t recall if he went more than two.

Looks like Mick doesn’t know where they’ve stashed Kevin Made either.

Beyond Susana, that’s an underwhelming AA rotation. I wonder if they will start stretching Henry out or leave him exclusively as a one-inning guy.

Hopefully Bennett will show up at AA at some point.
