Nats Lose, 5-1 in Spring Breakout #2

March 17, 2025

The Mets scored in three consecutive innings as they cruised to a 5-1 win over the Nats in a game shortened to 7½ innings by the rain.

Alex Clemmey got the start and struck out six over three innings. He allowed one run on a home run and three hits total while issuing a walk.

Alas, that would be enough to charge Clemmey with the loss, though a dishonorable mention goes to Jackson Kent, who coughed up four runs on five hits and two walks over an inning and a 1/3rd. He struck out one.

Brenner Cox and Phillip Glasser both reached base three times on two hits and a walk, with Glasser connecting for Washington’s only extra-base hit. Seaver King singled twice and Armando Cruz singled once to round out the hit column of seven.

T.J. White broke up the shutout with a sac fly in the last of the 7th. Cox, Glasser, King, Elijah Green, and Randal Diaz each stole a base, which, along with five walks, helped create 13 RISP opportunities. An 0-for-13 mark led to ten men left on base.

We now return you to shopping for ridiculous green-themed crap on Fanatics.

A few interesting 2024 draftee first time sightings: Jackson Kent (4th round) finally emerges from hibernation to poor results. Sir Jamison Jones (15th round) appears to… mixed results. 2 AB, 2 Ks. But he had a pick off from behind the plate. Yoel Tejeda (14th round) appeared too. Didn’t realize we had yet ANOTHER giant disguised as a pitcher in the org. 6’8″! Had a solid outing throwing 2 hitless innings.

Oh, almost missed it, but Luke Dickerson appeared too! Didn’t get an AB, but had two cleanly fielded chances in the IF.

Perhaps also worth noting is that Phillip Glasser continues his transition to the OF. It’s beyond strange, given our abundance of OFs and dearth of IFs, but here we are…

Maybe Phillip Glasser is being groomed as an all-around utility guy? Of course, if he really breaks out, he would have a chance at winning a starting job at some position. Of his minor league innings, I wonder how many are in the infield versus the outfield, and what is the trend? And what are his defensive strengths and weaknesses in IF and OF. I’ll look it up if he gets higher up on the prospects lists.

The shift to the OF is a relatively new thing. He was drafted as a SS, with infield flexibility. And after his red hot start to 2024 in Fredericksburg, he was promoted to Wilmington. At this point, he’d only been used at 2B, SS and 3B (with SS being the most frequent). After his promotion to Wilmington, he was immediately moved to the OF. His first game was in RF, his 2nd in LF. He then was used as a super utility, playing both corner OFs, 3B and a couple very rare starts at 2B, SS and even 1B. But by the last two months, he was playing almost exclusively at 2B again (with semi-frequent DH appearances), which suggested that he wasn’t moved off 2B because of he was really poor defensively there, otherwise they wouldn’t have moved him back.

What is so strange about all of this is that it wasn’t spurred on by him being blocked at his natural position, which we’re seeing with Cayden Wallace being blocked at 3B by House in AAA. Wilmington had a really poor, prospect-free infield when Glasser was promoted there and moved to OF. Viandel Pena was the starting 2B. Kevin Made was the starting SS. Murphy Stehly the starting 3B. None of these guys were much of a playing time obstacle. It was weird at the time, and it’s weird that it’s continuing.

I suppose it’s not going to meaningfully harm his development. But this org is almost completely devoid of infield prospects in AA (where Glasser finished the season). As best I can tell, it’ll be Morales at 1B, and then… Made at SS? Pena at 2B? ??? (Paul Witt?) at 3B? Unless they’re willing to commit to Glasser in a fixed position.

I’d expect Wallace to be at 3rd in Harrisburg, though not for the entire season is he can stay on the field

He’s played 13 of 14 games at 2B in ST (the other one was as a DH). Why use him at 2B if the short term plan for him is still at 3B? There’s plenty of playing time in ST to accommodate both House and Wallace at 3B.

Clemmey has simplified his delivery and appears to have bulked up a bit. his command issues resulted in a fair amount of three ball counts but he challenged hitters enough to only walk one.

We have a pretty good idea about how AAA and A plus will be stocked but what Delino gets should be a vague interesting blend
    Randel Diaz at?
Pena with Delino should be fun to watch along with Jonathan Thomas ( Hayes from the film Major League ??lol.)
Glasser adding another glove to his bag for the outfield makes sense considering his athleticism along with guys like King coming fast on the development chain.
    30-35 F in Milwaukee this morning .
TG HGI has coffee pot out in the lobby .
