AFL Update: Oct. 30, 2024
A five-run 7th was the difference as Salt River outslugged Glendale, 11-7 yesterday afternoon.
Three Nationals were in the starting lineup:
● Robert Hassell was the DH and batted third. He reached base three times on two walks and a single and struck out once.
● Max Romero Jr. returned behind the plate in the #6 slot in the Salt River lineup. He went 1-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored and struck out twice. He allowed his second passed ball and three more basestealers to steal without getting caught.
● Phillip Glasser was the No. 9 hitter and played second base again. He went 1-for-3 with two walks, two runs scored, and two RBI and struck out once. He had no defensive chances.
The Rafters (10-8) remain home this afternoon to host the Javelinas (5-13). Chase Solesky (0-1, 7.88) is expected to start for Salt River.
Glasser the Hurryin Hoosier for sure . He’s being groomed to be a depth choice below Garcia Jr , Vargas ( his days are numbered as the pipeline refreshes Davey with options ).
Romero is truly awful – what did they see in him to draft him?
Another feather in the cap for our scouts
A favor to a high visibility program ??
You keep pounding on the Nats for signing Max Romero as if it was an awful move. For one thing – dude, he’s a 9th round pick. Do you know what the total WAR is for all the players drafted in the 9th round of 2022? It’s zero. This is just not the rip that you think it is. Further, Romero was signed as an (at best) marginal prospect who, as a college guy, the Nats could sign below slot so they could split the rest of the slot value on other players to lure them out of college commitments (etc.). If they don’t sign the player in that slot, they don’t get the slot value.
They do this every year in the draft, as do pretty much all MLB teams. The fact is that the Nats got what they wanted from Romero when he signed below slot. If he turns into something as a player, great! That’s found money.
