Rochester Red Wings, 33-25, 1st Place I.L. East, 4 Lg. GB – 71-60 Overall
The Red Wings split their series with the RailRiders then lost the opener against the (ugh) Woo Sox. Tonight, the series resumes with four night games before finishing with a day game on Sunday. Rochester leads the I.L. East but trails Columbus in the overall I.L. standings in the second half.
Harrisburg 5 Bowie 2
• Solesky 6IP, 3H, 2R, 2ER, 0BB, 4K,
• Cuevas (W, 4-11) 2IP, 0H, 0R, 0BB, 2K
• Cronin (SV, 1) 1IP, 0H, 0R, 1BB, 0K
• Morales 3-5, 2RBI, 2B(10), SB
• Wilson 2-4, R, 2B
• Lile 1-2, R, 3BB,
Yoyo Morales’s two-run single capped off a three-hit night and highlighted a three-run 9th as Harrisburg downed Bowie, 5-2 in the series opener. Chase Solesky once again pitched well – six innings of two-run ball on three hits, no walks, four whiffs – and came away with his ninth no-decision in 13 starts. Michael Cuevas kept the Sox at Bay with two scoreless and picked up the win while Matt Cronin worked around a walk in the 9th for the save. Cody Wilson and Morales both doubled while Daylen Lile walked three times to lead the Sens’ seven-hit, eight-walk offense. Roster moves: IF Cayden Wallace activated from the 60-Day I.L.; C Onix Vega activated from the 7-Day I.L.
Brooklyn 6 Wilmington 0
• Tepper (L, 0-1) 4⅔ IP, 6H, 3R, 1ER, 1BB, 1K, E
• Simpson 1IP. 2IP, 1H, 0R, 0BB, 1K
• White 2-4
• Cruz 1-3, 2E(22, 23 overall)
Blue Rocks pitchers failed once again to throw the perfect game necessary to not lose as the offense was shut out for the 17th time, 6-0 on four hits. Mike Tepper took the loss, allowing three runs (one earned) on six hits and a walk over four and 2/3rds innings. He struck out one. T.J. White singled twice while Armando Cruz and Gavin both had one safety to round out Wilmington’s four-hit assault.
Fredericksburg 4 Lynchburg 2
• Clemmey 4IP, 2H, 1R, 1ER, 4BB, 5K, 80-42 PIT-K
• Bollenbacher (W, 2-2) 1IP, 3H, 1R, 1ER, 0BB, 2K
• Arguelles (SV, 10) 1IP, 0H, 0R, 1BB, 2K
• Bazzell 1-2, 2BB, 2RBI
• King 1-2, 2BB, 2RBI, 2SB
Fredericksburg doubled up Lynchburg, 4-2 to reduce its magic number to three while keeping pace with both Carolina and Salem in the C.L. North 2nd-half race. Alex Clemmey labored through four innings, walking four and allowing a run on two hits while striking out five. Matt Bollenbacher was awarded the win despite giving up a run on three hits in the 5th. Anthony Arguelles notched his tenth save while working around a walk in the 9th. Kevin Bazzell and Seaver King both went 1-for-2 with two walks and two RBI to lead the FredNats attack. Roster moves: LHP Nash Walters assigned from Rochester for MiLB rehab.
Bowie announcers said from the last out in the 1st inning until the walk in the 9th inning, the Sens pitchers retired 23 Baysox batters in a row. That’s impressive.
Lomavita threw out 2 baserunners on 2 attempts. He’s now 7 for 16 in CS (an incredible 44% caught stealing rate.
But don’t ignore Bazzell, who himself is 3 for 6 in stole base attempts (50%!). Carolina League average is 22%. So nice to have TWO very capable catchers there.
Yohandy Morales hasn’t hit a HR in 16 games now, but he’s still hitting a very solid .288 with .391 OBP over that span, for a combined line of .321/.415/.519 since returning from injury. Hope we’ll get to see how he fares in the AFL this October. He’s a perfect candidate, which might re-change the minds of some of these prospect watchers who were incredibly quick to change their tune about him.
A lot of his hits are to the opposite field. I like his approach.
