Omaha 2 Rochester 0
• Lord (L, 2-1) 5⅔ IP, 4H, 2R, 2ER, 2BB, 4K, BK
• Tice 2IP, 1H, 0R, 2BB, 3K, WP
• Crews 1-4, CS
No woulda, coulda, shoulda here. Well, at least not for Rochester. Omaha, on the other hand, might be wondering if a better throw on Dylan Crews’s grounder in the 1st gets turned into an out instead of an infield single… Instead, five Storm pitchers will have to settle for a combined, one-hit shutout and a 2-0 win. Brad Lord took the loss, allowing both Omaha runs on four hits and two walks over five and 2/3rds while striking out four. The Red Wings got just one baserunner into scoring position after back-to-back walks to Jack Dunn and Jackson Cluff in the 6th before Darren Baker struck out and Crews hit into a DP to end the only threat for Rochester.
Harrisburg 2 Akron 0
• Theophile (W, 2-2) 5IP, 2H, 0R, 3BB, 7K
• C. Romero (SV, 5) 1⅓ IP, 2H, 0R, 1BB, 2K
• D. Garcia 2-3, R, 2B, HR, 2RBI, 0K
• Pinckney 1-4, 2B(15), 2K
Dérmis Garcia’s two-out, two-run HR, in the… wait for it… 2nd as four Sens pitchers combined to shut out the RubberDucks, 2-0. Rodney Theophile went the first five and allowed two hits and three walks while striking out seven to even up his AA won-loss record at 2-2. The save went to Carlos Romero after putting the tying runs on with back-to-back singles to open the 9th before getting a whiff and a double-play ball. Garcia was the only Harrisburg batter not to strike out as the Senators kept the ‘Duck IFs cool with 17 whiffs. Roster moves: OF Robert Hassell emerged from witness protection activated from 7-Day I.L.
Greenville 11 Wilmington 10 (11 inn.)
• Cornelio 5IP, 6H, 4R, 4ER, 0BB, 6K, HR
• Schoff (BS, 1) ⅔ IP, 5H, 3R, 3ER, 0BB, 1K
• Guasch (L, 2-2) ⅓ IP, IP, 1H, 0ER, IBB, 0K
• White 2-3, 2R, 2BB, RBI
• M. Romero 2-5, R, 3RBI
• Glasser 1-4, 2BB, RBI
In a game that featured ten lead changes, 21 runs, and 28 hits, Greenville was the last man standing as they handed Wilmington an 11-10 loss in 11 innings. Riley Cornelio made his 20th start and allowed four runs on six hits (one HR), no walks over five innings while striking out six. Miguel Gomes was the sole Wilmington pitcher to not give up a run. The loss went to Richard Guasch on a one-out double in the 11th. T.J. White singled twice and walked twice while Max Romero Jr. singled, tripled, and drove in three as every Blue Rocks batter had at least one hit.
Lynchburg 3 Fredericksburg 0
• Clemmey ⅔ IP, 1H, 3R, 3ER, 3BB, 1K, WP, 33-12 PIT-K
• Denaburg 2⅓ IP, 2H, 0R, 0BB, 2K, 2-1 IR-S
• R. Ramirez 1-2, 3B
• Ochoa 0-1, BB
Alex Clemmey’s FredNats debut was one to forget: Three walks, three runs, and just 12 strikes on 33 pitches in a 3-0, rain-shortened loss to the Hillcats. Rafael Ramirez had the lone hit for Fredericksburg, a two-out triple in the 2nd while Nate Ochoa drew the only walk. The game, which began an hour late due to rain, was called after a 28-minute wait after the top of the 5th was finished.
DSL Giants Black 12 DSL Nationals 5
• J. Reyes 2IP, 0H, 0R, 0BB, 2K, HBP
• Martina (BS, 2; L, 0-2) 1⅓ IP, 2H, 4R, 4ER, 2BB, 1K, 3WP, HBP, 1-1 IR-S
• Cabrera 2-4, BB, 2RBI, SB
• Liriano 2-4, R
• E. Marmolejos 1-3, R, 2BB
A three-run 1st gave the DSL Nationals a three-run lead but the D-Nats relievers were lit up for five runs in both the 4th and 5th innings as the DSL Giants Black prevailed, 12-5. Juan Reyes went the first two innings and hit a batter but gox six outs over the course of six batters. Clarence Martina racked up his second straight blown-save-loss, allowing four runs on two hits and two walks and hitting a batter while getting four outs between the 4th and 5th innings. Manuel Cabrera, Hector Liriano, and Angel Requena each had two singles while Eddy Marmolejos drew two of the DSL Nationals’ eight walks.
Speaking of Brad Lord, he is now #2 in all of the minors in 2024 with an ERA of 2.11. Such a great story.
Andrew Pinckney has seven hits in the last five games, including four doubles, . . . but also eight K’s. All in all, there’s much to like about a 23-year-old holding his own at AA in his first full pro season. He has 20 SBs and 15 doubles in 96 games. He has yet to show the HR potential that he demonstrated in college (only 6 so far), definitely needs to walk more (6.6%), and can tighten up on the K’s (27.5%). Is this who he is, or does he have another level?
Wouldn’t it be nice that Hassell 3 and TJ White end up in Sens lineup soon together
2 one hitters tossed at Nats affiliates in one night ouch
Fred finds a way to win .
Smart Lowery to bat CV lead off .
Pinkney took a fastball to the helmet on Friday night and left the game. He was back in there last night. Theopile walked the bases loaded in the 1st inning, but escaped unscathed. He looked good after that.
I imagine that watching Clemmey must be difficult for Denaburg. wondering what could have been and how quickly six years went by.
the kid needs to tighten up a lot of moving parts. a bit concerning that Cleveland gave up so quickly. with six starts and twenty innings more than Sykora at this point I wonder how long before he’s shut down and sent to the complex to get ready for instrux.
On Friday at the complex the Nats FCL club scrimmaged against the 2024 draftees. That’s the best you can do with the idiotic early end of the FCL season.
Hassell was activated yesterday and didn’t play. He’s not in today’s lineup either. I have seen him going to the batting cage both days.
A lot like Cavalli’s “return”
Wanted to let you know Matt Cronin is headed to Harrisburg. Lots of folks appreciate your comments about him.
About time. Hope he does well there. Maybe Rochester later on.
Great to hear about Cronin. I listened to the game Friday and his command is obviously back. He was topping out at 92 mph so his fastball is not what it was before his injury. However, if he doesn’t get it back to 95 he would still be useful as a setup man or dare I say it even as a starter. All I know is the guy can still pitch and that curve of his is tough to hit. I am a little biased though. I watched this guy pitch travel and high school ball. It is really not out of the question to use him in another role if it gets him to the MLB faster.
