I guess I haven’t watched Sykora for a while as he is now working out of the stretch 100%, ditching that funky step back and rock delivery. still with the big leg kick, working in more splitters and having his way with the Carolina League hitters.

Sykora must have gotten tired of hearing that he still has things to work on at this level. No he doesn’t. case closed. Either that, or he got something really cool for being Carolina League pitcher of the week last week and wanted it again.

In looking at his numbers, the one that jumps out at me is 4.7 hits per nine innings. Susana’s number at the same level was 7.5, which still isn’t bad. In general, Sykora’s 4.7 seems to indicate that he not only has velocity, but movement too.

Sykora has been in need of a promotion to High-A for 10 weeks now. Its time.
6 perfect innings on just 75 pitches? come on.

Nice little write up (and some video clips) here: https://www.milb.com/news/nats-prospect-travis-sykora-leads-combined-no-hitter

Looking at the video….. now, I’m the furthest thing away from a pitching coach you’ll ever see, but those pitches don’t look “deceptive” or “dominating”. They’re not flashy, velocity seems to be 95-95mph on the fastball, break on the off-speed doesn’t seem huge….

… but they sure as hell must be effective, as based on the perfect performance through 6 on just 75-odd pitches last night.

Is it the release point? That looks very similar for all pitches, and the arm speed looks pretty consistent – so there’s a lot of deception prior to the release point that has the batters guessing?

I’d love to know from those with a hell of a lot more knowledge than me “What It Is That Makes Him So Good”?? As I haven’t been this excited about a Nats pitching prospect (Strasburg apart) since maybe JZimm….
