The Red Wings continued to administer an Indiana paternity test (“Who’s your Daddy?!”) to the IronPigs as they won their third straight, 12-3. Andrew Alvarez won his fourth AAA contest with five innings of two-run ball on four hits, no walks, and seven whiffs. Rochester tied its season high with 18 hits, with Drew Millas leading the way with three singles and a double and followed by Travis Blankenhorn, who fell a double shy of the cycle while smacking his 25th HR. Roster moves: RHP Spenser Watkins placed on the 7-day I.L., retroactive to 8/21.
Akron 3 Harrisburg 2

• Stubbs 2-4, R, PO @ 1B
• Hassell 1-3, SF, RBI, SB
Conversely, Harrisburg couldn’t get enough runs for their pitchers as Akron took its third straight from them, 3-2. Seth Shuman went the first five and gave up two runs on six hits (one HR) over five innings. He walked none and struck out five for a no-decision in his AA debut. C.J. Stubbs was the sole Senator with multiple hits as he singled twice and scored ahead of Phillip Glasser’s game-tying RBI single in the 6th. Michael Cuevas took the loss on a walk-single-single sequence in the 8th. Roster moves: RHPs Holden Powell, Rodney Theophile placed on the 60-Day I.L.
Hudson Valley 7 Wilmington 6 – GM. 1
• Tepper 2IP, 5H, 2R, 2ER, 2BB, 3K
• Amaral (L, 0-1) 2IP, 5H, 5R, 4ER, 2BB, 2K, HR
• Naranjo 2-2, 2R, 2BB
• Thomas 2-3
• White 1-2, R, HR, 2RBI
In the first game, it was another case of too little, too late as the Blue Rocks got three in the 7th but fell, 7-6. Mikey Tepper opened the game with two runs on five hits and two walks while striking out three. Austin Amaral took the loss as he handed over his beer and was spanked for five runs on five hits (one HR) and two walks over the next two innings. Joe Naranjo reached base four times on two singles and two walks while T.J. White homered and drove in two to lead the Wilmington offense.
Hudson Valley 6 Wilmington 0
• Arias (L, 4-2) 3IP, 3H, 2R, 2ER, 2BB, 4K, HR
• Vasquez 1IP, 0H, 0R, 0BB, 1K
• Suggs 0-1, BB, PB
For those wondering why Travis Sykora remains in Fredericksburg, one theory is that perhaps the Nationals don’t want the 20-y.o. Texan to feel the pressure of having to give up no runs to not lose, which Wilmington did for the eighth straight game as they were no-hit for the second time and shut out for the 15th time in the “aftercap,” 6-0.
Fredericksburg 5 Columbia 2
• Sthele (W, 6-7) 6IP, 7H, 2R, 2ER, 1BB, 3K
• Cranz (H, 1) 2IP, 1H, 0R, 1BB, 3K
• Arguelles (SV, 9) 1IP, 0H, 0R, 0BB, 2K
• Green 3-5, 2R, 2B, RBI, 2K
• Vaquero 2-4, R, BB, 2B, CS(5), E(5)
• Ochoa 2-4, R, 2SB
Fredericksburg jumped out to a 4-0 lead after three and cruised to a 5-2 win over Columbia. Travis “Sunday” Sthele notched his third quality start and won his fourth non-Sunday start with both Fireflies runs allowed over six innings on seven hits and a walk while strikng out three. Elijah Green singled twice, doubled once, and struck out twice while Cristhian Vaquero reached base three times on a double, walk, and a single to lead the FredNats attack.
Theophile on the 60 day DL.. just after a ropey 4 walk, loose control start earlier in the week….
… Should I be thinking bad, long term arm injury? As that’s unfortunately where my mind is going…..
Isn’t Theophile already on his second TJ?
I’m wondering if putting guys on the 60-day clears space in their organizational total to add more of the draft picks to rosters. I don’t know that at all, just speculating.
Powell also has had previous significant arm issues, so let’s hope they’re just being cautious in both cases. It doesn’t hurt to shut down guys this late in the season.
This smells like typical Nats gamesmanship. Clear space on the domestic roster while casting a seed of doubt for the Rule 5, not unlike how you can probably bank on Watkins making the start on the 28th or 29th.
That’s an interesting thought about planting Rule 5 seeds of doubt about a couple of guys who they likely won’t protect.
In their 2nd game, where they were no-hit again, 7 of the 9 batters on the Blue Rocks were batting under the Mendoza Line. The highest OPS on the team was .671.
Somehow the team’s OPS is .617 on the season, which is .029 lower than the next worst team, .074 below league average and .120 lower than the leagues best offense.
Some other stats of futility. They have hit the fewest HR too, almost 20% fewer than the next worst and incredibly nearly 3 time fewer than the league leaders (56 vs 159, lol).
They are last in the league or close to in every offensive metric except one: hit by pitch, which they strangely lead the league by a huge margin (93) which is 16% more than the next best (80).
Which team’s bats are worse, the 2023 DSL Nats or the 2024 Blue Rocks? I didn’t think it was possible to be as bad as that dreadful DSL Nats team, and yet… it’s a lot closer than I’d have thought.
Crews will make his MLB debut this Monday against the Yankees (and Juan Soto).
