Friday’s News & Notes

August 9, 2024

Team Yesterday Today Pitching Probables
Rochester Lost, 3-2 @ Buffalo, 6:35 p.m. Alvarez (2-3, 5.13) vs. Schultz (3-3, 4.88)
Harrisburg Postponed @ Bowie, 7:05 p.m. Lara (7-4, 3.27) vs. Tavera (3-0, 3.30)
Wilmington Postponed vs. Jersey Shore, 6:35 p.m. Susana (2-0, 3.15) or Cornelio (6-9, 5.83)
vs. Neunborn (3-3, 2.70)
Fredericksburg Postponed vs. Carolina, 7:05 p.m. Sykora (2-3, 2.67) vs. Knoth (3-5, 4.37)
DSL Nationals Lost, 8-5 @ DSL White Sox, 11 a.m.

Buffalo 3 Rochester 2
• Ward (L, 6-4) 5IP, 5H, 3R, 3ER, 2BB, 4K, HR, HBP
• Willingham 2IP, 1H, 0R, 0BB, 1K
• Chaparro 2-2, R, BB, HR, 2RBI
• Dunn 1-2, BB

The Bisons loaded the bases on three consecutive singles to open the 5th, then scored on a double-play ball. No RBI, but the run still counted and it was the difference in a 3-2 loss for the Red Wings. The “L” went to Thad Ward, who gave up a two-run HR in the 2nd and five hits total while walking two and striking out four over five innings. Andrés Chaparro homered to give Rochester a 2-0 lead in the 1st, then walked and singled. The rest of the lineup went 2-for-27 with six walks.

Harrisburg vs. Bowie – PPD
They pulled the plug on Game Three of the Harrisburg-Bowie series well before first pitch (how novel). With rain in the forecast today, the plan is to make it up with a doubleheader tomorrow. Roster moves: IF Yohandy Morales activated from the 7-Day I.L.

Jersey Shore vs. Wilmington – PPD
SSDL for Battle of the Blues in Wilmington. Same plan for making it up too. Roster moves: RHP Jaren Zinn released; RHP Mason Denaburg, who turned 25 yesterday, reassigned from Fredericksburg.

Carolina vs. Fredericksburg – PPD
Given the track of the storm, Fredericksburg was the first to call it off yesterday. Like Wilmington and Harrisburg, the plan is to make it up tomorrow, if the field will be playable after last night’s and this morning’s rains.

DSL Mariners 8 DSL Nationals 5
• Reynoso (L, 1-3) 3IP, 4H, 4R, 2ER, 0BB, 4K, HBP, 2WP
• J. Hernandez 2IP, 0H, 0R, 2BB, 2K, WP, E
• Liriano 1-3, R, BB, RBI, CS
• Tejada 1-3, HBP, SB(38), CS(7), E
• Marmolejos 1-4, 2RBI, SB, E

The two teams combined for nine hits, thirteen walks, thirteen runs, and five errors with the D-Mariners committing just one of them as the downed the D-Nats, 8-5. Franniel Reynoso went the first three innings, allowing four runs (two earned) on four hits, no walks, one Robles, and two wild pitches. It was his third loss in six starts. Two DSL Nationals – Hector Liriano (single, walk) and Juan Obispo (single, HBP) – reached base twice in a four-hit, four-walk offensive effort.

Morales is back to AA. Hurrah! He absolutely destroyed low A pitching to the tune of .417/.440/.750, but the most encouraging part was that he displayed power he had never shown yet in his very brief career. Hope he thrives in Harrisburg.

Farewell Jaren Zinn. He was perhaps one of the most successful high-wire relief acts, walking almost exactly one batter per inning in his career (along with a ton of strikeouts), yet somehow keeping his ERA at a respectable 4.29. I don’t think he’ll have a hard time adjusting to non-baseball life, having come from Harvard.

And congrats to Mason Denaburg for finally reaching Wilmington after being stuck in Fredericksburg for 3 straight seasons (and 6th pro season). I must say, things didn’t look good after his disastrous 2023. And while he hasn’t been particularly good, he’s been a serviceable reliever this year. That in itself is an impressive feat. Hope the promotion gives him a big boost, and maybe he can rediscover some of the stuff that made him a first round pick, even if injuries have clearly taken a toll.

Overall, Nats have not drafted well.
In 2018 they could have drafted Shane McClanahan, Steven Kwan, David Fry or Jarren Duran.
In 2019, George Kirby or Gunnar Henderson.
You can check other drafts as well.
Hindsight is 20/20, but they have missed out often!!

      1. John C. says:
        August 9, 2024 at 1:25 pm

Meh. One can play the “hindsight” game with pretty much any team’s past drafts. The same people who point to good players a team could have drafted that were taken later (a) ignores the fact that every other team also passed on those same players multiple times; and (b) dismiss it when a player the team drafts does better then literally dozens of players drafted earlier.

Not a good track record. Sykora looks pretty good at the moment. But probably few years away.
