The Red Wings built a 5-0 lead through four before the Bisons went on four-run stampedes in both the 5th and 6th innings. Rochester responded with two in the 9th and had the tying run on second when they ran out of outs and lost 8-7. Brad Lord didn’t lose but was roughed up for four runs on five hits (one HR) and three walks over four and a 1/3rd innings. He struck out seven. Methusel…uh, Luis Reyes finished the game but gave up the last four runs on five hits (one HR) and two walks. Darren Baker singled twice, doubled once, and plated two while Trey Lipscomb went 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI to lead the Red Wings ten-hit parade. Roster moves: OF James Wood recalled to Washington.

Harrisburg high-wired out of ten hits and six walks allowed to still prevail, 2-1. Kyle Luckham gave up the Curve run on a home run and six hits total over five innings. He walked two and struck out six. Todd Peterson, who put on two baserunners in the top of the 7th, got the benefit of Cortland Lawson’s RBI double, which was the third and final hit for the Senators. Andrew Pinckney and Terone Harris had the other two hits (both singles) while Pinckney also walked and stole his 18th base. Roster moves: RHP Zach Brzykcy reassigned from Wilmington.

With the wind blowing out, the Blue Rocks launched three home runs and boiled the BlueClaws, 7-3. Riley Cornelio evened up his won-loss record at six with a quality start of two runs on five hits (one HR) and three walks over six innings. He struck out three. Gavin Dugas led the Wilmington hit column with three singles, followed by Jared McKenzie with a single and a homer, and T.J. White with single and a double. Roster moves: IF Murphy Stehly activated from the 7-Day I.L.

Highlighted by Elijah Green’s three-run triple, Fredericksburg busted out for four runs in the 2nd and cruised to a 6-1 win over their favorite tomato cans Delmarva. 27-y.o. Dannel Diaz was perfect for four innings in the spot start while setting down six on strikes. Johan Otanez walked two and fanned three over the next two to pick up the win. Nate Ochoa singled, doubled, walked twice, and scored thrice while Roismar Quintana single and double to lead the FredNats attack. Roster moves: C Nate Rombach promoted from the FCL; C Ivan Murzi demoted to the FCL; RHP Austin Amaral activated from the 7-day I.L.

D-Nats faltered in the late innings, giving up seven runs in the D-Rockies last three “ups” to turn a 2-2 tie into a 9-3 loss. Jose Feliz pitched a career-high six innings while giving up a career-high four runs (all earned) on four hits and a walk to lose for the first time. 17-y.o.’s Angel Feliz and Victor Hurtado both went 3-for-4 with a run scored while 18-y.o. Hector Lirano drove in all three DSL Nationals runs on a double, sac fly, and a single.

  1. It seems like the Nats are most linked to Griffin and Rainer for the draft. I have seen Montgomery ad a pick, but not necessarily linked.

    Rainer and Feliz could give them to really good SS prospects.

    Anyone have any news or thoughts?

    1. The first thing to note is that this is considered to be a pretty weak draft field. The second is that supposedly the top tier is nine deep, and the Nats are picking #10. There seems to be some disagreement on who the nine are, though.

      To me, at this point with the rebuild closer to fruition, they don’t need another high schooler (Griffin or Rainer). They need someone who can help in two or three seasons, not four or five. Griffin in particular seems to be high-ceiling but also high risk due to contact issues. The Nats need another high school pick with contact issues like they need a hole in the head.

      Among the collegians, there is some thought that Montgomery may fall because of injury. The Nats don’t really need another OF prospect, but I would buy the argument that Montgomery has the power (27 homers this season) to transition to 1B/DH if it becomes necessary. Nick Kurtz of Wake Forest is another power bat who might fall to #10. Pitcher Trey Yesavage is built big like Rizzo likes them and could be in play if he’s still on the board.

      From the “second tier,” the big riser seems to Christian Moore from CWS champ Tennessee. He had 34 homers and 19 doubles this season, and the Nats have some connections with the Vol program with recent picks Lipscomb and Cortland Lawson, plus scouting Dollander last season.

      1. Would love to see Kurtz fall to the Nats. He has all of the tools to be a high-level MLB 1B for a decade. Big time power, great plate discipline, gold glove level defense and he can even run. The one concern is that he missed time each of the last two years because of injury. Would fill a big hole.

        1. The big club certainly could use help at 1B and DH, so I wouldn’t mind a Kurtz pick at all. Morales was struggling before he got hurt. He’s now been out six weeks with a “thumb injury,” which would lead one to suspect that it’s broken.

  2. the extra patience of the AAA hitters made Lord work a little harder but still showing confidence in his pitches. I think the Buffalo play by play guy is one of the better ones in MiLB and he was impressed.

    Green’s triple left the bat at 113, a liner to the gap in left center. the only other thing that fast was him making it to third without a throw. the numbers are still the numbers and he has a ways to go, but at least he’s getting something positive to help along the way

  3. Good to see someone (Brzykcy) finally escape the Bermuda Triangle of rehabbing that Wilmington has become. You’ve got Cavalli, Henry and Farrell officially on rehab assignments, but you also have Cronin, Guasch and Shuman, who’ve recently returned from long term injuries, playing there, the former two of whom were playing one or more levels above A+ last season.

    We’re now on day 11 since Cavalli’s last start (which itself was preceded by a 21 day gap). I don’t know what to make of the conventional approach to his rehab. It seems to suggest there’s been some hiccups in his recovery, but the club are being tight lipped about this.

  5. Sens pitchers worked themselves out of two bases loaded jams. Fortunately, the Sens bats “exploded” for two runs to secure the win.

    1. I don’t know why Delino has moved Lile around so much in the lineup lately. dropping him to sixth last week and yesterday leading off. the Eastern League is tough enough for a 21 yr old, don’t we think?

  6. After a particularly good stretch, Dashyll Tejeda has disappeared from the DSL Nats lineups for the past 6 days. I’d been watching to see if it was due to a deserved mid-season promotion, but no corresponding move has come yet. And with the team being so averse to sending injured players to the IL, I’m not sure if it’s another phantom injury or an drawn out promotion. But Tejeda is currently hitting .373/.456/.610, which is by far and away the best hitter on the DSL Nats.

    In the meantime, bonus baby, Angel Feliz has heated up in a major way. He’s now hitting .314/.400/.457 on the short season.
