Rochester rallied for three in the 4th to erase a 2-0 deficit, then got a solo HR from Travis Blankenhorn in the 8th that proved to be the difference in a 4-3 win over Worcester. Brad Lord fell an out shy of quality start, giving two runs on a home run and six hits total over five and 2/3rds innings. He walked one and striuck out four while winning his second AAA game, ninth overall. Stone Garrett singled twice and scored a run while Jackson Cluff reached base three times on two walks and a single and stole a base to lead the Red Wings offense. Roster moves: LHP Garvin Alston reassigned from Harrisburg; RHP Jackson Rutledge optioned from Washington; RHP Eduardo Salazar recalled to Washington.

Harrisburg 4 Richmond 2 – GM. 1
• Lara (W, 5-3) 6IP, 6H, 1R, 1ER, 0BB, 1K

• Stubbs 1-2, R, BB
• Witt 1-3, R, HR, 3RBI

Paul Witt’s Earl Weaver Special in the 2nd gave the Senators a 4-0 lead that became 4-2 win to stop a seven-game slide. Andry Lara logged his fifth AA win while pitching six innings of one-run ball on six hits, no walks, and one whiff. It was his seventh quality start for Harrisburg, ninth on the season. Harrisburg totaled seven hits and two walks, with C.J. Stubbs the sole batter to reach base twice.

Harrisburg 2 Richmond 0
• Theophile (W, 1-1) 6IP, 2H, 0R, 2BB, 5K

Harrisburg completed the doubleheader sweep with two pitchers combining to shut out Richmond, 2-0 on three hits. Rodney Theophile picked up his first AA as he allowed two hits and two walks over the first six while striking out five. Jack Sinclair gave up a leadoff single, hit the next batter, then walked another after the Flyinq Squirrels sacrificed the tying and go-ahead runs into scoring position. The 25-y.o. then got a strikeout and a lineout to earn the save. C.J. Stubbs and Cody Wilson both had RBI doubles while Cortland doubled and scored a run as the Sens collected five hits and three walks total.

Wilmington 3 Brooklyn 2

• McKenzie 2-3, 2B
• Thomas 2-4, R, 2B, 3B

The Blue Rocks got five innings of scoreless relief and justenough offense to spin the Cyclones, 3-2. Seth Shuman gave up both Brooklyn runs on a home run and three hits total over four innings. He walked one and struck out two. Richard Guasch put up two goose eggs to get his second win while Matt Cronin worked a 1-2-3 ninth for his fifth svave. Johnathan Thomas doubled, tripled, and scored a run while Jared McKenzie singled and doubled to lead Wilmington’s eight-hit parade.

Fredericksburg 5 Carolina 2
• Sthele (W, 4-6) 5IP, 3H, 2R, 2ER, 1BB, 7K, HR
• S. Vasquez (SV, 6) 1IP, 0H, 0R, 1BB, 0K
• Pimentel 2-3, R, 2B, RBI, SB(15)
• Brown 1-2, R, BB, RBI
• Infante 1-3, 2B, RBI

Fredericksburg scored in each of its last four “ups” to turn a 2-0 deficit into a 5-2 win in the opener. Travis Sthele won for the third time since not starting on Sunday (coincidence? probably) as he gave up both Mudcats runs on three hits (one HR) and one walk over five innings. Kevin Rodriguez put up donut in the 6th for the hold; Samuel Vasquez worked around a walk in the 7th for the save. Five different batter drove in a run, including Brandon Pimentel, who singled, doubled, scored a run, and stole his 15th base, and Marcus Brown, who reached base twice on a safety and a base-on-balls.

Fredericksburg 5 Carolina 0
• Polanco (W, 7-2) 5IP, 2H, 0R, 3BB, 2K
• M. Diaz 1IP, 0H, 0R, 2BB, 0K
• Pimentel 2-3, 2R, 3B, HR, RBI
• Infante 1-3, R, SB
• Cruz 1-3, R

For the second time in three days, the FredNats swept a doubleheader from the Mudcats as three pitchers combined on a three-hit, 5-0 shutout. Starter Bryan Polanco went the first five, allowing both Carolina hits, three walks, and striking out two as he won for the seventh time. Brandon Pimentel had two homers – one over the fence, the other of the Little League variety as the scored on an error after belting a triple. Sammy Infante extended his hit streak to five games with a single and stole a base while Armando Cruz rounded out the Fredericksburg hit column with a single.

FCL Cardinals 3 FCL Nationals 2 (11 inn.)
• Colon 4IP, 3H, 0R, 2BB, 4K
• R. Ramirez 1⅔ IP, 1H, 0R, 0BB, 2K
• D. Perez 1+ IP, 1H, 1R, 0ER, 0BB, 0K, HBP, WP
• Alu 2-3, R, 2B, RBI
• E. Ramirez 2-5, 2B, RBI

The FCL Nationals loaded the bases with two out in the 9th but couldn’t push across the go-ahead run. Ditto for the 10th and 11th before the FCL Cardinals got the gamewinner on a leadoff single to walk it off, 3-2. Starter Leodarlyn Colon tossed four scoreless with three hits and two walks alloed while striking out four. Doimil Perez took the loss, giving up the aforementioned single in the 11th after working around a hit batsman in the 10th. Jake Alu and Enmanuel both had a single, double, and an RBI to lead the F-Nats attack. Roster moves: IF Winder Diaz released.

DSL Arizona Red 8 DSL Nationals 1
• J. Reyes ⅓ IP, 1H, 2R, 2ER, 1BB, 0K, HBP
• Gimenez 1⅔ IP, 0H, 0R, 0BB, 2K, 2-0 IR-S
• Marmolejos 2-3, R, BB
• Tejeda 0-3, 2BB, OF assist @ 1B

The D-AZ Reds built a 6-0 lead before the D-Nats ended the shutout bid with a sacrifice fly in the 6th. The DSL Nationals would fall, 8-1 while pestering the DSL Arizona Red pitchers for five hits and four walks. D-Nats starter Juan Reyes retired just one of four batters faced, as he was charged with two runs on a hit, a walk, and a Robles. Eddie Marmolejos had two of the D-Nats’ five singles while Dashyll Tejeda drew two of their four bases-on-balls.

the key for Harvey was always health (one time he was injured getting hit in the dugout by a batted ball!). I recall reading a report that he and his father tweaked his delivery before last season to try to stay on the mound. it seems to have worked and this is a nice result for the Nats.

Lots of different possibilities. Callis mentioned them still being rumored as going underslot for catcher Caleb Lomavita at 10. Too tired to lay out all the math, but that could lead to something like Lomavita, William Schmidt, Tommy White, PJ Morlando.

I would love to see another high end pitcher added with what they have done with Susana and Sykora (among others)

Buying someone like Hagen Smith or Jac Cags down to 10 is also possible, but less likely IMO.

My choice would be coming out of this with something like Griffin-Schmidt-White. Nats would get the highest ceiling hitter and pitcher in the draft.

    1. KW says:
      July 14, 2024 at 9:42 am

The Nats do need to bolster the catching in the organization, but Lomavita would be a significant overreach at #10 according to most boards. There’s a chance he could still be available when the Nats pick again at #39. If not, they could look at Jake Cozart of NC State at 39 or 44.

It will be interesting to see if one or more of the college stars price themselves out of the top of the draft and fall down toward our range at #10.

According the Keith Law and others, this isn’t a draft to go for underslot savings to save for later picks. With such a thin draft, the quality of depth just isn’t there.

You’re a much bigger fan of taking high schoolers than I am! Law is speculating that the Nats will avoid Griffin and his contact questions specifically because of Green’s struggles.

See my post regarding Griffin vs. Green in yesterdays comments.

As far as Lomavita, obviously the Nats would think he won’t make it to 39 in that scenario. Baseball’s draft is not about who will go where based on merit. The fact that you can manipulate your pool money creates weird situations. In that case, getting the combo of those four would be better than what they would get with their 1st four picks going conventially.

While this year is not considered as good, we will still see teams going slot high and overslot late. There are some very talented players that will get pulled down to the 30s and later.

Schmidt scouting report has such upside .
    But Rizzo loves his catchers

  7. FredMD says:

Lord definitely showing more respect and getting hit harder by the AAA batters. still challenging them however and showing confidence and commanding all his pitches. glad to see him get a win for a gritty performance.

  8. EdDC says:

Why not request an interview with Rizzo at least a top staff member to discuss a few questions you have been having about prospects? For example, what’s up with the Matt Cronin mystery?

    1. Nick says:
      July 14, 2024 at 11:51 am

I’ve had the same question for a long time with this org. It seems Martinez is the only person allowed to talk. Why are there never any in season interviews with the farm director, pitching coach, hitting coach , scouting director,, the coaches at the various minor league levels….hell even Rizzo himself,.

And this cold war secrecy imposed about player injuries is beyond comprehension

  9. EdDC says:
    July 14, 2024 at 9:50 am

I haven’t been following Eduardo Salazar at all. Does anyone have info on him? Also, Jack Sinclair seems to be putting up consistent numbers. What kind of stuff does he have? Is he a prospect?

  10. Mark L says:

I like what Brad Lord has done so far at Rochester. He’s not dominating, yet, but remember he started the year at High A Wilmington.

There are 2-3 relievers at Rochester that could be called up to replace Harvey, it’s good to have those choices.

As for the draft EAPN has mock drafted Kurtz at 13. I f the 1st baseman out of Wake forest is still there at #10 the Nats would be negligent not to take him.

I remember when KW and I kept saying the Nats should have taken Brooks Lee at #5 and they took Elijah Green instead. Now Lee is already in the majors and Lee is still at Low A.

Delino needs a healthy roster and Cronin
In town long enough to help win a few games .
Yes Cal Bear Caleb an over reach
We didn’t need Keith Law angle to have us come up with that viewpoint .
If Ranier gone by ten I’d love to see the East Carolina Pirate gang planked in ..

  12. FredMD says:

Todd made an excellent point on his site that the pick also adds 2.3M of money to the draft pool, the return got even better when I read that.

So FRED MD that 2.3 million should be vested in the ten slot pick ? I’ve liked Hagen Smith all season

  13. don says:

Amos Willingham called up by Washington! Why him?

    1. Will says:
      July 14, 2024 at 3:57 pm

First, because he’s already on the 40 man. Second, because since his very bad start to the season, he’s been pretty good. Over his past 20 games, he has a 3.47 ERA/1.15 WHIP.
