Syracuse 13 Rochester 2
• Watkins (L, 7-4) 1IP, 3H, 4R, 4ER, 1BB, 0K, HR
• Adon 3IP, 1H, 0R, 1BB, 1K, HBP
• L. Reyes ⅔ IP, 8H, 9R, 1ER, 0BB, 1K, 2E
• Baker 2-5, 2R
• Meneses 1-2, 2BB, RBI, E
The Mets got four in the 1st and nine in the 5th as they bitch-slapped the Red Wings, 13-2. Spenser Watkins was lifted after one inning, four runs allowed on three hits (one HR), one walk, and no strikeouts. That would be enough to lose as the Rochester offense mustered six singles, one double, and five walks. They went 1-for-4 with RISP and left on nine baserunners. A dishonorable mention goes to Luis Reyes, who retired two of eleven batters faced, gave up eight hits, and committed two errors to render eight of the nine runs allowed as unearned. Roster moves: RHP Amos Willingham optioned from Washignton.
New Hampshire 3 Harrisburg 2
• Luckham (L, 3-7) 6IP, 5H, 2R, 2ER, 2BB, 6K, HBP
• Acosta 1IP, 0H, 0R, 0BB, 0K
• Lile 1-2, BB
• Arruda 0-2, BB, RBI
Harrisburg scored twice in the 8th without a hit to make this look closer than it was as New Hampshire prevailed, 3-2. Kyle Luckham let in the first two Fisher Cat runs on five hits and two walks over six innings to notch his eighth quality start and seventh loss. Daylen Lile’s one-out single would be the only hit for Harrisburg. A walk, a Robles, two sacrifices, and a wild pitch produced the two Sens runs. Officially, the wind was measured 3mph from RF to LF, not counting the 14 whiffs from HP in the bottom halves of the innings. Roster moves: LHP Garvin Alston Willingham reassigned from Rochester.
Aberdeen 4 Wilmington 0
• Cáceres (L, 3-7) 3⅔ IP, 5H, 4R, 4ER, 3BB, 2K, WP
• Huff 2⅓ IP, 0H, 0R, 0BB, 3K, 1-0 IR-S
• Nunez 0-2, BB, SB
The Blue Rocks were shut out for the tenth time and no-hit for the first time, 4-0 by the IronBirds. Bryan Cáceres gave up all four Aberdeen runs on five hits and three walks over three and 2/3rds innings to take his seventh loss of the season. Viandel Peña broke up the perfect game with a walk in the second inning, one of three by Wilmington (Elijah Nunez, Max Romero). Roster moves: IF John McHenry reassigned from Fredericksburg.
Salem 6 Fredericksburg 5 (10 inn.)
• Davis 5IP, 3H, 2R, 0ER, 2BB, 7K, WP
• Vasquez (BS, 2; L, 4-1) 1⅓ IP, 1H, 3R, 1ER, 2BB, 1K
• Cox 2-4, 2R, BB, 2B, RBI, SB, CS, OF assist @ 2B
• Brown 1-4, 3B, RBI
Fredericksburg blew leads of 3-0, 4-3, and 5-4 to drop the opener to Salem, 6-5 in 10 innings. Staff ace Marc Davis spun another five strong innings, allowing two unearned runs “thanks” to a dropped third strike with two out, a Sammy Infante error, and an ill-advised dive by Brenner Cox to turn a single into a triple. The loss went to Samuel Vasquez, who let in the last three runs over an inning and a 1/3rd on one hit and two walks. Cox singled, doubled, walked, stole a base, and scored twice while Marcus Brown connected for an RBI triple and Infante for an RBI double to lead the FredNats offense. Roster moves: LHP Dustin Saenz MiLB rehab transferred from the FCL; LHP Pablo Aldonis placed on the full-season I.L.
FCL Astros 10 FCL Nationals 8
• Colon 5IP, 5H, 0R, 1BB, 3K, BK
• A. Ramirez ⅓ IP, 1H, 4R, 3ER, 2BB, 0K,
• Luis (L, 0-1) 5BF, 2H, 5R, 1ER, 2BB, WP
• D. Perez (BS, 2) ⅔ IP, 1H, 0R, 0BB, 2K, 2WP, 2-2 IR-S
• Alu 2-3, 2BB, 2B, RBI
• Soto 2-4, 2R, BB, 2B, RBI
• E. Ramirez 2-5, R
An 8-0 lead was too small for the F-Nats ‘pen as they gave up nine in the 6th and one in the 7th to lose, 10-8 to the F-Astros. The meltdown turned Leodarlyn’s five scoreless innings into a no-decison. Aldo Ramirez retired one of five batters faced, with the other four coming around to score when Andy Luis handed over his beer and failed to get an out in the space of five batters. Doimil Perez struck out two fof three batters he faced and wild-pitched in both of his inherited for the blown save; the loss went to Luis. Jake Alu singled, doubled, and walked twice while Elian Soto singled, doubled, and walked once to lead the FCL Nationals offense.
DSL Nationals 6 DSL Marlins 5
• Ju. Reyes 2IP, 0H, 0R, 0BB, 2K
• Martina (BS, 1) ⅔ IP, 1H, 1R, 0ER, 1BB, 1K
• Jo. Sanchez (W, 2-0) 2IP, 2H, 1R, 1ER, 1BB, 1K
• Tavarez 3-4, R, HR, 2RBI
• Tejeda 1-2, 3R, 2BB, HR, RBI, 3SB(30)
• Liriano 1-1, R, 3B, RBI
The DSL Nationals rallied for four in the 7th to walk off the DSL Marlins, 6-5. Dashyll Tejeda homered, walked twice, and stole three bases while Feldi Tavarez homered and singled twice to power the D-Nats’ attack, which featured seven hits, four walks, and five steals. Jose Sanchez got the win in relief with a run on two hits and a walk over two innings. Starter Juan Reyes tossed two perfect frames with two strikeouts.
The Senators best offensive weapon is the base on balls.
Tejeda must’ve read the comments and said “just see what I can really do”. In addition to his HR, he effectively turned his two bases on balls into a triple and a double, respectively by stealing 3 bases. If you factored his astronomical stolen base rate, his already incredible 1.079 OPS would balloon to nearly 1.800(!). He’s doing something very special this season. Hope he can continue it stateside next year!
First two draft picks have signed: first rounder King, and third rounder Bazzell. King signed for about $800k under slot, and Bazzell for slot. That should give the Nats some margin to work with for some of their other reaches.
Also, the Nats signed their 8th & 9th round picks for the sleazy amounts of $2,000.
Was listening to Kiley McDaniel, who’s the ESPN draft guy, and he said his favorite teams picks were the Nationals.
Huh, did he expand on which picks he liked so much?
Looking at his top 250 ratings, he had King (10) at 16, Lomavita (39) at 24, Dickerson (44) at 77, Bazzell (79) at 59, Kent (108) at 144, Peterson (230) at 205 and Shelton (590) at 104.
Just on average, each team should have drafted at least 7 ranked players, and the Nats got 7, one of whom (Shelton) looks very unlikely to sign. There has to be a few other teams that snagged guys he was high on that fell in the draft, right?
Looks like McDaniel saw Lomavita as a good pick for value, but most of the other picks were taking guys earlier than he’d have done. Was he talking about any of the Nats’ later round picks or something? Would love to get this perspective, because it feels to me like a pretty middle of the road sort of draft for the Nats.
It’s looking like a good thing that the Nats went heavy on hitters in the draft, plus picked up Wallace in the trade. With King already signed, I imagine that the hope is that he can do what Crews, Pinckney, and Morales did last summer: show well in the lower levels and push all the way to AA by the end of the summer. Wallace will be arriving at the AA level. There certainly will be the opportunity for the catcher draftees to move up quickly as well, if they hit.
It’s worth noting that Keith Law said the 2023 was the deepest ever. You can certainly see that with how well a lot of the Nats from that draft have done.
This year is considered much shallower. We shall see.
Dustin Saenz Harrisburg ETA off rehab ?
Can anybody tell me when they expect Cronin to move up from high A? It seems he has the command he lost due to his back injury. Maybe it’s a case of getting his fastball up to what it was, I don’t know. However, he’s posting a .084 ERA so maybe it’s a roster spot holding it up. If that is the case then maybe a trade is inevitable.
What seems to be in store is the big club trading Kyle Finnegan and Dylan Floro and then pulling up some relievers from Rochester to replace them. In that scenario, whoever leaves Rochester will be replaced by some guys from Harrisburg, who will be replaced by some guys in Wilmington, and then some guys from Fredericksburg will move up. At least this what many of us are hoping for…
It appears to me that Cronin is ready for a move straight to Rochester. The guy is killing it right now.
