Tuesday’s News & Notes

June 25, 2024
Team Yesterday Today Pitching Probables
Rochester OFF DAY vs. Indianapolis, 6:45 p.m. Gray (MLB Rehab) vs. Ashcraft (1-0, 0.87)
Harrisburg OFF DAY @ Erie, 6:05 p.m. TBD
Theophile (AA debut) vs. W. Hernandez (3-3, 3.62)
Wilmington OFF DAY @ Hudson Valley, 6:35 p.m. Theophile (3-4, 4.44)
Cornelio (5-6, 5.11) vs. Stuart (5-2, 3.66)
Fredericksburg OFF DAY @ Salem, 7:05 p.m. Polanco (5-1, 3.25) vs. Cohen (3-5, 4.21)
FCL Nationals OFF DAY vs. FCL Astros, 6:35 p.m.
DSL Nationals Lost, 2-1 @ DSL NYY Bombers, 11 a.m.

Rochester Red Wings, 38-35, 3rd Place I.L. East, 11GB
Rochester won twice in the final week of the first half to finish in third place in the division, but 11 games off the pace set by the International League’s first-half champs, the Omaha Storm Chasers. Indianapolis comes to Frontier Field for six this week with a matinee on Thursday.

Harrisburg Senators, 38-31, 2nd Place E.L. Southwest, 1GB
If it’s any consolation, the Senators were actually two games short of winning the division as they would have had to win 40 games to beat the Seawolves on percentage points, thanks to Erie playing two fewer games than Harrisburg. Coincidentally, those teams will meet this week in Erie for the final time this season, with Harrisburg holding an 8-7 edge in the season series thus far.

Wilmington, 1-2 T4th Sally Lg. North, 1GB – 32-37 overall
Wilmington heads north to Hudson Valley for the first of two trips to upstate New York. The Blue Rocks are dead last in the Sally Lg. on offense despite having the oldest team in the league.

Fredericksburg Nationals, 2-1 T1st, 1GA – 37-32 overall
It’s hard to believe, but this week’s series against the Red Sox is the first between Salem and Fredericksburg in 2024. The FredNats’ second-half schedule is heavily tilted toward its division (eight of ten series) with just three series outside of Virginia – July 4-6 in Salisbury, MD, August 20-25 in Columbia, SC, and August 27-September 1 in Kannapolis, NC.

DSL Nationals 2 White Sox 1
• J. Feliz 6IP, 3H, 0R, 1BB, 9K, PO @ 1B
• Robles (BS, 2) 1⅔ IP, 2H, 1R, 1ER, 2BB, 3K
• Familia (W, 3-0) 1⅓ IP, 0H, 0R, 0BB, 2K, 1-0 IR-S
• Tejada 2-4, 2SB
• Cabrera 1-3, R, BB, RBI

The DSL Nationals lost a 1-0 lead in the 8th but walked off the DSL White Sox in the 9th for a 2-1 win to open Week 4 of the DSL season. 18-y.o. Jose Feliz struck out nine and walked one over six scoreless innings, giving up three hits but came away with a no-decision. 17-y.o. Jean Robles was charged with his second blown save as he let in the tying run on a two-out walk, steal, and single in the 8th. 18-y.o. Jeffrey Familia got the last four outs and the win when the D-Nats loaded the bases on two singles and a walk then got the game-winner with no one out on 18-y.o. Robert Santos’s RBI single.

It’s on the twitters that Theophile got promoted to Harrisburg. Maybe he’s the TBD for that game.

First time in a long time that there’s been something to write about in the DSL.

I commented on Dashyll Tejeda last week, and since then he’s upped his game even more. He’s now batting .370/.460/.611 with 19 SB in 15 games. He’s also only 18 years old.

On the pitching side, Jose Feliz had another excellent start, bringing his ERA down to 0.53 and his WHIP to 0.65, and a remarkable 23 K to 2 BB in 17 IP. Jeffrey Familia closed out the game to keep his ERA perfect in 5 games and 9.1 IP. He also has a good 13:4 K:BB ratio and a 1.07 WHIP. Both pitchers are also only 18.

I am not a subscriber to FSS Plus, but Joe Doyle has joined Keith Law in mocking Braden Montgomery to the Nats. Not sure how the ankle injury would affect the bonus if at all.

Could Montgomery to Nats be actually a consideration since
Some of the 1 B prospects such as TJ White scuttling even in the Grand Canyon ?

We have to take a few moments to give kudos to Lowery / Lord @ FRED for the patience they are exhibiting amidst a season with 11 potential starters / swing / loogies on the 7 day or 60 day . Actually that totally might be more like 14-15.
Commendable to see four guys run out there along with – sigh – Sunday Stehle. Plus maybe a bullpen day
FCL has four guys learning their craft on the mound who may not be ready for FRED call
Bryan Sanchez is on an undetermined 7 day DL rehab @ FCL?? 7 day DL stints are unknown just ask Aldo ( Ramirez )?
Just had to say this about FRED after Polanco deserved better run support .
Should be interesting if the Nats can find a guy in July draft who can land on his feet in FRED rotation . Those types on DL from 23 draft .
