definitely looked like he went with the decaf cold brew yesterday. now if he string together a few more of those he may get a look before season’s end.

Watching Mitchell Parker’s with another terrific outing had me looking things up.
There are only 3 Pitchers with this stat —
13+ strikeouts on fewer than 85 pitches since 1988:

    Clayton Kershaw (4/13/22)

    Greg Maddux (9/23/00)

    D.J. Herz (Saturday)

      Great stat!

Herz was just so, so good. I know the Marlins are basically a AAAA team, but he was making them look foolish. 18 swinging strikes!

Herz doesn’t have overpowering stuff, but it’s clearly deceptive, because even in the two games before where he struggled with his command, he still managed 6 and 11 swinging strikes, and his 14.2% swinging strike stat would be 8th best in the majors among qualified pitchers.

Let’s see how Herz adapts once teams get the scouting reports and tape on him, but he definitely has the “stuff” to succeed in the majors!

Parker seems to have been able to keep up his unexpectedly strong start. After 12 starts (including two against the Braves) the word should be out by now on Parker, but it doesn’t show. First 5 games: 2.67 ERA, last 5 games: 2.73 ERA.

Who would’ve guessed last March that the Nats rebuild would currently be led by Jake Irvin, Mitchell Parker, Jacob Young, DJ Herz and Trey Lipscomb?

What a disappointing season from Max Romero. After posting a .412 OBP last season, he’s hitting .151/.225/.278 this season. His walk ability has completely disappeared. Sitting at 19% last season in A ball, it’s dropped by 300% to a mere 6.5%. Power dropped. Strikeouts rose. Batting average cratered. Basically, no positives to take from this season.

But besides Phillip Glasser and Daylen Lile, I don’t think there’s a single other batter in Wilmington that’s had an even semi-successful 2024.

Kevin Made’s strong start has completely disappeared. He’s hitting a repeat of 2023 over his past 25 games: .149/.253/.207.

Will Frizzell is done for, hitting just .129/.250/.149.

    TJ White a dreadful: .139/.250/.229

Sammy Infante is hitless since returning from injury, and hitting .130/.259/.217 on the season.

Elijah Nunez, to his credit, has 2 hits since his return from injury (in 25 ABs…) and is hitting a mere .135/.256/.135 in a bitterly disappointing follow up to his encouraging ’23 season.

Those are some incredibly bleak numbers.

Can we invent a new term for batting futility? Failing to hit above .150 should be called the Wilmington Line.

Will Frizzell is truly another sad story. He has battled injury in the past and overcame them, I believe he is “injured”. An article from the past (2021):
