Meanwhile, the Rochester offense was held to two singles and two doubles, barely avoiding getting shut out with a pair of steals by Darren Baker and Jackson Cluff and groundout to the right side in the 1st for the lone run. The Red Wings dropped the game, 8-1, but won the series, 4-3. Roster moves: C Drew Millas recalled to Washington; C Jarrett Gonzales from the Development List.

The Senators twice rallied for single runs in the 8th and 9th innings to force extras, but saw the go-ahead run fall 90′ short in both the 10th and the 11th. The Rumble Ponies singled to open up the 11th and put runners on the cornders. Holden Powell then intenionally walked the second batter in hopes of getting a forceout at home, but walked the third batter unintentionally to lose the game. Kyle Lyckham had the hard-luck no-decision as he gave up one run on a home run and six hits total over seven innings with one walk and three whiffs. Dérmis Garcia drove in both Harrisburg runs on solo HR in the 8th and a bases-loaded walk in the 9th as the Sens collected five hits and three walks total.

The win went to Miguel Gomez, who got the last out of the 7th and pitched a scoreless 8th. Wander Arias worked around a single in the 9th to get ths save, his first of ’24. The FredNats continue to suffer from in-game BP thrown by the first person on the mound, with Travis “Sunday” Sthele digging a 6-1 hole after four innings, losing for the fifth time in nine starts. Bubba Hall let in another three runs over two innings. Fredericksburg rallied for five in the 7th, highlighted by a two-run HR by Roismar Quintana but that would be it as the Wood Ducks took the game, 9-6 and the series, 4-2. Christhian Vaquero the FredNats attack with a single and a double while Marcus Brown singled twice and hit the showers a little early with an ejection after (presumably*) disputing a called third strike in the 9th.* Down East has no video feed for MiLB.tv
FCL Nationals, 10-10, T2nd FCL East, 3GB
The FCL Nationals took four of six to get to .500, which seemed like a pipe dream after opening the season with just three wins in the first two weeks of May. This week, the F-Nats play five games with off day on Friday.
DSL Nationals – OPENING DAY
The D-Nats start play today. A quick Excel check shows that there 12 holdovers from last year’s tomato cans roster – six pitchers and six position players. Roster moves: LHP Henry Moreno reassigned from the FCL; RHPs Angel Pena, Gustavo Rivas placed on 60-Day I.L.
Consider me worried about Brady House. He had a fabulous April, where he improved on basically every criticism of him. But in May, he’s taken a dark turn, and regressed across the board. Over his past 18 games, he’s hitting .177/.235/.290 with 29 K (43%) and only 5 BB (7%). His BABIP is a healthy .281, so this isn’t just bad luck. No, this criticism doesn’t mean that I think he’s done as a prospect. He’s still supremely talented, and only turns 21 tomorrow! But earlier this season, he looked a sure bet to get a quick promotion, and set him on course for potentially seeing some playing time in the majors this season, but it’s looking like the criticisms of him from 2023 are still valid, and he’ll need more time and improvements before he moves anywhere.
So many good relief pitchers to highlight who threw yesterday.
AAA: La Sorsa has really turned his season around. Sporting a 6.48 ERA through the end of April, he’s posted a 1.20 ERA and a correspondingly good 0.73 WHIP.
AA: Sinclair threw 2 perfect innings to bring his seasonal stats down to 1.93 ERA, 0.86 WHIP and 27:7 K:BB.
A+: Miguel Gomez, already promoted from Fburg, has been even better in Wilmington, sporting a 0.68 ERA in 13 IP. Wander Arias has been nearly as good with a 1.66 ERA in 21 IP and a mere 0.92 WHIP.
A-: Moises Diaz, with another scoreless outing, is doing his best Miguel Gomez impression with his own 0.68 ERA in 26 IP. He also has a 0.99 WHIP and Thomas Schultz isn’t too far behind, with his own sterling 1.82 ERA, 0.93 WHIP and 32:9 K:BB in 24.2 IP.
With Gomez having already been promoted once, it’s fair to give him some more time at his current level, but Sinclair, Arias, Diaz and Schultz are all older than average for their levels. They need to keep being challenged with a promotion to a more appropriate level. Their performances alone justify it.
Last comment, but just had to highlight the newly invigorated Blue Rocks offense.
Jeremy de la Rosa has come out of the blocks flying. In 21 games this season, he’s already hit 18 XBH, whereas in 93 games last year, he hit 25 total. It looks like he may have bulked up a bit during his rehab, as he’s tapped into a new level of power, while his speed seems to have dropped off (3 for 7 in SB attempts). Most importantly, he’s keeping his Ks down (22%). But I’ll be very interested to see if he can sustain this level for much longer. His power will definitely drop, but I’m hoping we have 2022 JDLR and not 2023 JDLR.
Phillip Glasser is somehow almost matching his otherworldly performance in Fredericksburg in Wilmington. He’s now hitting .298/.416/.415 with as many walks as strikeout (18). I hope they can find more playing time for him in the infield, as that’s his primary position. It’s nonsensical for this org to convert good defensive infielders to corner outfielders. Wilmington’s infield isn’t anywhere good enough to justify this.
And as always, Daylen Lile keeps chugging along. He’s now hitting .296/.374/.462, just a smidge under his line last year during his breakout season in Fburg. He got 66 games before being promoted. I wonder if he’ll get a nod in around a month again this season? He definitely deserves it.
Yeah, it’s pretty funny thinking that the Nats may need to draft for infield depth when they’re playing an infielder who is actually hitting (Glasser) in the outfield.
Of course the House and Morales struggles certainly slow the rebuild timeline on the infield front. They may end up having to hope that Lipscomb can be the 3B starter for a while.
It should be noted that AA baseball is hard. Ask Hassell, who spending part of his third summer in Harrisburg. Ask Wood, who struggled more at AA than he has at AAA. It was a pretty lofty expectation for Crews, Pinckney, and Morales to start their first full pro seasons against AA pitching. Crews and Pinckney have managed to hold their own, which is impressive, even if the stats aren’t world-beating.
AA is for prospects, AAA is a holding pattern. For all of you that want to bust up our team in Harrisburg, at least wait until the first half is over. This team is really fun to watch. I am wondering if there will be a corresponding move for Drew
and at all levels there will always be a few organizational guys to fill in as needed. you’ll never see a roster made up entirely of “prospects”. that’s the balance that is sometimes tough to wait out
either Stubbs or Pineda is the likely replacement
Already done – the Red Wings took Jarrett Gonzales off the Development List
Henry Moreno down to DSL not the reverse
That gives Sandy Martinez 3 lefties on staff
Something has to give between A minus and A plus
Liriano and Hurtado ( 2 lefty bats ) manning the outfield corners @ DSL .
Angel Feliz @ SS.
