The D-Nats ‘pen gave up nine runs and walked eight in a 9-5 loss to the D-Jays.
More rehabbers returning. Great to see Ferrer back, and firing strikes immediately too. If we aren’t there already, we’re going to have some difficult decisions to make about starting rotation spots. For example, Gray will return to DC soon, which will almost certainly lead to Herz’s return to Rochester. Will that finally spur the Nats into moving Ward to the bullpen? Or, do they demote him to Harrisburg to work out his control issues at a lower level?
Speaking of which, and linked to the thread yesterday about the Nats’ hitters struggling, it got me thinking that there’s been remarkably few demotions this season, particularly among the bats. With a whole host of injuries and a few releases of MILFAs, the Nats haven’t had to or actively avoided demoting players, despite many of them clearly in over their heads, while still allowing the better performing players get promoted. Among hitters, I can only think of Marcus Brown going from WIL to FBG, but there has to be more examples, right? And yet TJ White is currently hitting .130 and Cristhian Vaquero .153…
This also seems to be a new trend. I know the Nats have been loath to demote guys before, but just given how much so many players are struggling, it would seem it might even do a lot of good for the player to face worse pitching for some time to “reset”, because I don’t see how giving, for example, TJ White yet another week against A+ pitching is going to be the reason for things to suddenly click. He’s now hitting .154/.263/.260 across two seasons and 128 games in Wilmington, with his line presently trending in wrong direction. Something’s gotta give…
LeCroy may just have to work with more “ Stone “ Broadcaster Garrett and Eric Meija
Alu due back soon !?
If Solesky can give Delino outings again like he did vs Division leader Erie Sea Wolves
All the better especially since Michael Cuevas is sputtering .
Do both Luke Young and Michael Cuevas rely on their finesse and off speed options vs others guys who have good heaters like Sykora?
Or has the Nats implemented “ the cutter” with many young pitchers ??
Just asking
V Peña near a promotion ?
He’s been stuck in Wilmington for 3 seasons now, and he’s been one of few bright spots for the Blue Rocks this season. Perhaps the bigger question is whether they’re willing to cut ties with JT Arruda and/or Jordy Barley, Harrisburg’s two options at 2B. Arruda is hitting only .215/.299/.278 at age 26, and Barley is just as bad at .174/.314/.255, but Pena might have to hope for an injury to one of them, given the Nats’ aforementioned reluctance to demoting players.
Another developing under the radar arm ? Marc Davis ERA under 4
a very streaky player, would love to see him continue his success in the second half, he has yet to show that consistency of full season results
I’m referring to Pena
Ok Fred
Give Ward to Delino and Beltran for playoff chase
five innings, 68/49 pitches/strikes and zero walks for Susana. that is what they need to see from him in A ball. keep it up young man!
A switch appears to have flicked for Susana in June. Looking at his month by month splits…
https://www.milb.com/player/jarlin-susana-703186?stats=splits-r-pitching-mlb&year=2024
ERA of 6.45 in April… 8.05 in May… and 0.90 in June, across 4 starts. More than a hit per inning in the first 2 months; 10 hits against in 20 IP in June. 20:43 BB:K ratio in 31 1/3 May and June innings…. 8:32 in 20 June innings.
Give me more of this, please!!
In Susana’s last five starts (five innings apiece), he has only had one game where he’s surrendered any earned runs (2) — and curiously also the only game in which he’s gotten the Curly W! In that time he has struck out 41 men in 25 innings. In the four starts in June, opponents hit .147/.237.147. In other words, he’s suddenly the beast we thought we were getting, despite the deceptive 1-7 record.
James Wood debut vs. Mets Monday night!
Next question : does LeCroy get a replacement body from AA?
