Red Wings posted a picket fence in the early going, then broke out for three in the 5th and cruised to a 6-2 win in the opener. Joan Adon turned in another quality start, giving up both Saints runs on five hits and two Robles over six innings. He walked none and struck out two. Juan Yepez and Travis Blankenhorn both went went deep while Trey Lipscomb singled twice and was hit by a pitch to lead the Rochester offense.

In the nightcap, Rochester mustered just one run on offense and did not get a combined shutout from the bullpen, losing 4-1 to split the twinbill. T.J. Zeuch was given the start for some reason and lowered his ERA to 12.06 with two runs allowed over three innings on four hits, two Robles, no walks, and one (1) strikeout. Robert Gsellman kept the fire burning with two more runs allowed on one hit and three walks over one inning before Luis Reyes tossed two scoreless innings. Brady Lindsly and Trey Lipscomb both doubled while Jack Dunn scored the lone run after a single and stolen base in the 1st. Roster moves: OF James Wood placed on the 7-Day I.L.
Harrisburg Senators, 27-19, 2nd Place E.L. Southwest, ½ GB

Bryan Cáceres gave up all four Bowling Green runs on eight hits and three walks over five innings. Marlon Perez (2IP) and Carlos Romero (1IP) locked things down the rest of thr way, but the offense left runners on in each of the final four ups, including the tying run at third in the 9th. Roster moves: 2B Gavin Dugas promoted from Fredericksburg.

Bryan Sanchez walked seven of 20 batters faced and somehow managed to only give up four runs on five hits (one HR) over three and a 1/3rd innings. Brandon Pimentel (two singles) and Brenner Cox were the only two batters to reach base twice as the rest of the lineup went 2-for-27 with no walks and eight strikeouts.

The F-Nats did not take the lead until they walked off the F-Cards on a two-run HR by Nick “Power to the” Peoples for a 7-5 win in 10 innings. Peoples also doubled, walked, and drove in four on the afternoon as the FCL Nationals racked up 11 hits and seven walks while emptying the bench. Leodarlyn Colon went the first five and let in three runs on five hits (one HR) and three walks while striking out two. Richard Guasch and Zach Brzykcy both put up a goose egg while winning pitcher Doimil Perez dominated the FCL Cardinals with eight whiffs over the last three innings. Roster moves: RHP Richard Guasch, OF Jared McKenzie assigned from Wilmington for MiLB Rehab.
Congrats to Dugas on a well deserved promotion.
This FCL Nats team is turning into quite a powerhouse. Elijah Nunez, Jared McKenzie, Cade Cavalli, Zach Brzykcy, Seth Shuman and Richard Guasch are all rehabbing there at the moment. They’re all much better than the age appropriate guys whose playing time they’re “taking”.
Speaking of, why is 23 year old Brandon Pimental still in Low A? The only one blocking him is 28 year old Trey Harris with a .429 OPS at Wilmington.
Don’t get me started again on the number of guys 1-3 years older than league average, who are repeating their levels and dominating them.
Obviously Pimentel needs to be moved up but I don’t think he’s played in Fburg before this season, has he? Thought hhe was an UDFA who only placed in the FCL last year?
Regardless, yeah, time for a shake up. Now is the perfect time with Brandon Boissiere (who is no longer a prospect) on the IL.
Why is 23 year old catcher Nate Rombach in the FCL?
Head scratching!! Why oh why?
20 yr old Doimil may disagree.
Adonis Medina, 27, was once a top 100 MLB prospect at 84 in 2018. He was also number three in the Phillies’ organization long ago. He has identical WHIP and ERA of 1.17. I’m wondering if anyone has seen him play and does he have MLB stuff or just AAAA? It looks like he lacks an overpowering fastball and maybe the Nats have lots of those.
SCOUTING REPORT Baseball America: Medina features a three-pitch mix out of a clean delivery with good arm action, led by his average fastball that generally sits 92-93 mph and touches 95. He produces solid cutting action on the pitch and commands it well, with the ability to throw it to both sides of the plate.
I don’t hold out high hopes for him, though he does seem to have adapted well to his recent move to the bullpen, but he can’t be worse than Tanner Rainey at this point. Not that long ago, Kyle Finnegan and Hunter Harvey were also former prospects who the Nats took a flier on. Maybe something clicks with Medina. Or it doesn’t, and he’s the next Chad Kuhl, Rico Garcia, Hobie Harris, Cory Abbott, Tommy Romero, Aaron Sanchez, Sam Clay, Patrick Murphy, Jake McGee, etc., etc. But you don’t know until you give him a shot.
too early to say for sure but someone may have convinced Adon to throw strikes and take his chances with the ensuing contact. 1BB total in his last two starts. not sure his stuff is gonna play in the show with this approach. let’s see how it plays out in June.
“No one cares how fast you threw ball 4” – Some guy, whose name I’m forgetting 😉
Irvin’s walk rate has dropped by 61% compared to last year.
Parker’s has dropped by 64% (most remarkably via a jump from AA/AAA to the majors!)
Gore’s has dropped 24%.
Clearly, Rizzo was on to something, and it seems to have sunk in among the guys in the majors. Unfortunately, the AAA SPs have been a utter disaster from a command perspective. While Adon has had a couple decent performances, his BB/9 is still 6.3, which is almost identical to Ward (6.2). Rutledge and Gsellman haven’t been much better (5.1 BB/9), and Herz has been a disaster (8.2). I think Rizzo might want to check in with the instructions Rochester’s pitching coach, Rafael Chaves, is giving his arms.
Meanwhile Harrisburg has been immune to these problems. Alvarez (3.2 BB/9), Luckham (2.2), Cuevas (3.3), Lord (3.0), Knowles (4.4), Henry (5.9).
Adon has had his chances. Time to move on, but good for him in his last start!
I’m a perpetual sucker for hitters who posted big numbers in college. (Where have you gone, Ricky Hague? Pfitz Nation turns its lonely eyes to you.) Yes, Dugas is already 24, hasn’t played above low A, and isn’t exactly a defensive stud. But one of these days, one of these guys is gonna keep hitting in the pros. Lipscomb has proven that it can be done. (Great job by him keeping his chin up after being sent down and continuing to hit up a storm.)
Can someone tell me why Blankenhorn isn’t getting a shot to play some 1st base in Washington? Seems to be hitting bombs in Rochester on the regular.
