Rochester 7 Buffalo 5
• Gsellman 3+ IP, 4H, 3R, 3ER, 2BB, 3K

• Wood 3-4, R, BB, 2RBI
• Baker 3-5, 2R, 2B, 2SB
• Call 1-3, 2BB, 2RBI
The Red Wings scored in four straight innings to erase a 3-1 deficit and stampede the Bisons, 7-5. Robert Gsellman made the spot start and hit the wall in the 4th when he put on the first three baserunners before he was lifted. Adonis Medina emptied the bases while finishing the 4th and pitching a scoreless 5th and was credited with the win. Rico Garcia let in a run while giving up two hits and a walk to get the rulebook save. James Wood pushed his hit streak to 10 games and on-base streak to 20 with three singles and a walk while Darren Baker doubled once, singled twice, and stole two bases to power the Rochester offense. Roster moves: RHP Jackson Rutledge recalled to Washington as 27th man; RHP Nash Walters reassigned from Harrisburg; LHP Richard Bleier exercised the release clause in his contract.
Harrisburg 5 Erie 1 (6 inn.)
• Knowles 3⅔ IP, 3H, 1R, 1ER, 2BB, 2K, 2WP
• S. Reyes (W, 3-1) 2⅓ IP, 1H, 0R, 1BB, 3K, WP, 1-0 IR-S
• Pinckney 2-3, R, 3B, 3RBI
• Hassell 1-2, 2R, BB
• Morales 1-3, RBI
Andrew Pinckney’s bases-clearing triple highlighted a four-run 2nd as Harrisburg took the opener, 5-1, in a rain-shortened game. Lucas Knowles was lifted after 61 pitches, having alloewd a run on three hits and two walks over three and 2/3rds innings. Samuel Reyes stranded one while getting out of the 4th, then put up two goose eggs to earn his third win. Pinckney also singled and scored and run while Robert Hassell singled, walked, and scored two runs to lead the Senators attack. Roster moves: IF Jordy Barley placed on the 7-Day I.L.; SS Jackson Cluff reassigned from Rochester; RHPs Andry Lara, Miguel Gomez, and Todd Peterson promoted from Wilmington; C CJ Stubbs assigned from Washington (MLFA) and placed on the Development List.
Aberdeen 6 Wilmington 2
• L. Young (L, 2-2) 4⅓ IP, 2H, 2R, 2ER, 3BB, 4K, HBP
• M. Perez 1IP, 1H, 0R, 0BB, 1K
• M. Romero 1-3, R, BB, HR, RBI
• Peña 1-3, BB, E(5)
Wilmington’s reality check did not bounce in a 6-2 loss to Aberdeen, the seventh straight for the Blue Rocks. Luke Young made it to the 5th but not out of it as the IronBirds got to him for two runs on two hits and three walks. He struck out four and hit a batter while losing his second game of ’24. Max Romero homered to end the shutout while Viandel Peña reached base twice on a single on a walk as Wilmington collected six hits total, with one (1) coming in nine RISP chances. Roster moves: UT Viandel Peña, C Geraldi Diaz activated from the 7-Day I.L.; RHP Jose Atencio promoted from Fredericksburg.
Fredericksburg 5 Myrtle Beach 3
• B. Sanchez 3IP, 5H, 3R, 3ER, 1BB, 3K
• Denaburg (W, 3-0) 3IP, 2H, 0R, 1BB, 3K
• Schults (SV, 7) 1IP, 1H, 0R, 1BB, 0K
• Vaquero 1-1, R, 3BB, 2B, 2RBI, SB
• Cruz 1-3, R, BB, 2B, RBI
• Cooper 1-3, R, BB, RBI, 2SB(5)
The FredNats only collected five hits, but four of them came in the 2nd as they put up four runs and held off the Pelicans for a 5-3 win. Bryan Sanchez failed to make it the 5th for the 11th time in 12 Low-A starts, giving up all three Myrtle Beach runs on five hits and a walk over three innings. Three relievers combined for six shutout innings, with Mason Denaburg (3IP) earning the win, Moises Diaz (2IP) the hold, and Thomas Schultz (1IP) the save. Cristhian Vaquero doubled once, scored once, walked three times, and drove in two while Armando Cruz reached base twice with a walk and a double to lead the Fredericksburg offense. Roster moves: Dannel Diaz promoted from the FCL; C Ivan Murzi reassigned from Harrisburg.
FCL Nationals 6 FCL Astros 5
• B. Romero 3IP, 2H, 1R, 1ER, 0BB, 2K, HR
• D. Perez (BS, 1; W, 1-1) 2IP, 3H, 2R, 2ER, 2BB, 3K, WP, PO @ 1B
• Rivero 1-2, R, 2BB, 2B, SB
• Tavares 1-2, R, BB, 2B, RBI
• E. Ramirez 1-3, 2B, 2RBI
The FCL Nationals got an error and two walks (one intentional) in the bottom of the 7th, then scored the gamewinner on a wild pitch for their second win of the season. That made a winner out of Doimil Perez, despite two runs allowed on three hits and two walks in his two innings thrown. Starter Brayan Romero gave up a solo HR and single over three innings with no walks and two whiffs. Enmanuel Ramirez, Carlos Tavares, and Yoander Rivero each had a double while the F-Nats drew five walks and stole three bases to produce their six runs.
Brady House was ejected last night. He hit a line drive down LF line that was clearly fair, but called foul. It cost him a hit and two RBIs. He and Sens coaches argue to no avail. House then strikes out, argues again, and is tossed.
Due to possible rain, today is now just the regularly scheduled game. The double header will be tomorrow night.
Thanks for the info on Thursday. The weather conditions yesterday prompted me to swap my ticket for last night for Thursday’s game — I have the 17-game plan — and this might actually work out. 🙂
So happy for Mason Denaburg to get a win and lower his era to 2.41. It would be a major positive development to see him pitch well enough to earn a promotion to Wilmington.
Thanks SD, I hadn’t noticed. Something to follow.
And so the carousel lurches back to life. Congrats to Lara, Atencio and Gomez on the deserved promotions.
Rochester’s once deep, albeit unimpressive, bullpen is thinning rapidly, having lost Bleier, M. Barnes, Parker, and (temporarily) Rutledge. It doesn’t help that the others there have been pretty bad. Zeuch, Nogosek and Cate are all currently sporting ERAs above 10.00, and Gsellman, Willingham and La Sorsa above 5.00. Adonis Medina and Rico Garcia are the lone brightspots. I wonder when the cavalry in Harrisburg will begin to get promotions ahead of AAAA retreads like Walters.
I don’t want to jinx it, but has Denaburg turned a corner? I know, he’s 24 and struggling mightily in low A ball. But over his past 6 games and 10.2 IP, he has a perfect ERA. The control is still a concern, having walked 5 in that span. But a 4.4 BB/9 is manageable. His career line of 8.0 is not. I still don’t hold out hope for Denaburg being a contributor to the Nats, but if he can make it to AA or something, I’d consider that a positive outcome, all things considered, when it looked like he should have been put out of his misery a long time ago.
Lastly, while Joey Gallo continues to look as lost as Elijah Green at the plate, the “youngsters” do the opposite. Baker is looking like the perfect lead off hitter, batting .315/.395/.361 with the 3rd most SBs in the Int’l League (14). Drew Millas continues to do his best impression of James Wood, hitting .318/.348/.621 on the season. And James Wood continues to hit like the top 10 prospect he is, at .357/.455/.586.
Denaburg is not the same pitcher he was in ’22, then throwing a mid to upper nineties four seamer with that plus plus changeup. he is now featuring a cutter that is several ticks slower and he relies on getting batters to chase. his line would have looked a lot different had De La Rose not leaped above the wall to pull one back with two aboard. Green also ran one down 400 feet in center. I’m rooting for the kid with all the injuries he’s worked through.
Thanks for the “details”!
Glad to see Erick Fedde have a GREAT game against his former team!
it appears they’ve removed learning 1B from TJ White’s lesson plan. he is still very young for the level so I hope he’s not getting discouraged. still taking walks at a good rate so that’s a good thing.
What do you do with Joey Gallo? If he were a minimum wage guy, you would just release him. He usually gets to an OPS in the 700s. He fields well. And he does that even while striking out way too much and not even hitting .170. So do you keep him? Why, because the Nats have $5 million sunk into him? Or because you think he might be able to come around to do something sorta halfway decent, some day?
PS on James Wood: “How are Ya Gonna Keep Him Down on the Farm” (when he can see Paree)?
Time to release Gallo, and bring up Wood. Also, Drew Millas is a better option at catcher right now. Nats are also wasting roster spots on Nunez and Rainey. Neither of whom will play a role in the Nats future. They have gotten away with wasting roster spots for a month and half, but its catching up with them.
