Rochester Red Wings, 17-18, 5th place I.L. East, 8½ GB
Rochester won just twice against first-place Scranton/Wilkes-Barre to fall two games further back in the division and below .500 for the season. This week, the Red Wings host the third-place Bisons for six with five night games and a Sunday afternoon tilt. James Wood was named International League Player of the Week for May 6-12 after going 10-for22 with 5HR and 12RBI against the league-leading Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders. It’s the second POTW won by a RedWing and the fourth for the Washington system this season.
Harrisburg Senators, 19-13, 3rd Place E.L. Southwest, 1½ GB
The Senators return home after taking four of six from the Fisher Cats to edge within a game and a half of 1st place. It’s seven this week against the Seawolves, including a doubleheader tomorrow morning.
Wilmington Blue Rocks, 15-16, 6th place, Sally Lg. North, 4GB
Wilmington lost all six to a streaking Jersey Shore to fall below .500 for the first time this season. This is more in line with the team’s -34 run differential, which suggests a 12-19 record. The Blue Rocks hose Aberdeen for six this week with a matinee on Wednesday.
Fredericksburg Nationals, 22-11, 2nd place, C.L. North, 1GB
A strong bullpen and plenty of offense have been covering for starters who can’t go more than four innings or allow less than three runs and less-than-stellar defense. Still, despite scoring nearly six runs a game, the FredNats can’t seem to catch the MudCats in the standings. This week, they remain in South Carolina, heading to the Redneck Riviera for six against the Pelicans, including a nooner tomorrow.
FCL Mets 10 FCL Nationals 4
• C. Sanchez 5IP, 5H, 3R, 3ER, 1BB, 2K, HR
• R. Ramirez (BS, 1; L, 0-1) 2IP, 4H, 5R, 3ER, 4BB, 0K, BK
• Ju. Garcia 2-4, R
• Mojica 2-4, R, 2B, 2E
The FCL Nationals rallied for four in the 5th to take a 4-3 lead but did not get the rainstorm necessary to stop the game after five and 1/2 innings. Instead, the F-Nats relievers were lit up for seven runs for a 10-4 loss to the F-Mets. Camilo Sanchez made his second start and went five full innings, allowing three runs on five hits (one HR) and a walk while striking out two. The (dreaded) blown-save-loss went to Reilin Ramirez with five runs let in (three earned) on four hits and and four walks over two innings.
Elijah Green in May has a strikeout percentage of 35. Progress, progress.
I started typing “Elijah” into Baseball-Reference and it offered me “Elijah Dukes.” PTSD officially activated!
Add Jeremy ( Spoken Pearl Jam ) Bautista to the promotion fodder to the Complex
35% is still far too high, but kudos to Green for going strikeoutless yesterday for the first time in 18 games, and just the second time all season (29 games). Hope something is starting to click!
Too bad Moises Gallardo isn’t healthy to flash his skill set
The truly awful Dominican league team of ’23 is now the truly awful FCL team of ’24. I see that Elian Soto didn’t even rate promotion. What’s the over/under on how many of these guys will even make it to Fredericksburg? Maybe five? And I’d probably bet the under.
I’m mostly impressed that more than two batters got promoted from last year’s DSL team (it was four), partly because Luis Arias, who got injured in his second game and missed the rest of the season, got a promotion too. Unfortunately, all of them haven’t been good so far, but Acevedo is showing some promise. The DSL Nats’ sole above average hitter, Carlos Batista (.726 OPS), has had a very rough introduction stateside, still hitless in 4 games, but most disappointing has been 2023’s FCL breakout player, Jorgelys Mota, who’s batting a mere .083/.083/.125 so far. Having finished the season in Fburg, it was surprising to see him go back down to Florida this year, and he’s not exactly making a case for himself…
Reilin ( the years ) Ramirez ( Steely Dan)
Anyones guess when Lara toes the rubber for a Delino this week ?
Herz’s task of righting his ship comes against the team who may be the best hitting and patient club in the IL. of course, baseball logic says he’ll walk no one and dominate. fingers crossed for him.
Dannel Diaz was rewarded for allowing 4 runs in 1.2 innings of FCL work by being assigned to Frederick. at 27. after bombing out at Wilmington. alrighty then
Maybe brass shouldn’t draft a third Elijah ?? Snarkle , Luke
are Willie, Mickey or the Duke available?
No, but I’m sure Wily Mo Pena would come cheaply. Wily Mo, Elijah, Lastings, . . . and yet a certain national publication still lets Jim Bowden write about talent evaluation. Where have you gone, Smiley Gonzalez?
No kidding KW .
Congrats to Todd Peterson and Miguel Gomez reach Sens bullpen
It’s like an exhale with Peterson finally putting everything together to ascend .
FredMD any comments ?
I’m going to try Harrisburg another time
Saturday has too much moisture in the 4 cast .
let’s hope for good health, he won’t blow them away but he knows how to pitch. of course the batters in AA know how to hit too. I’d expect him to be a mid-inning guy. good luck to him!
