FredNats rallied for three in the 8th to break a 4-4 tie for the third and final lead change in a 7-5 win over the Shorerbirds. Marc Davis turned in his obligatory three innings of work this week, dinged with a two-run HR and four hits total while walking one and fanning one. Bubba Hall got the dreaded blown-save-win with two runs let in on three hits over two innings without a walk or a whiff. Thomas Schultz gave up a run on a home run in the 8th but finished the game with the lead intact for his fourth save.
Fun fact, Brandon Pimentel currently leads the minor leagues (all levels) in RBI with 29. Technically, Heston Kjerstad is #1 with 30, but he’s been promoted to the majors, so he’s not in the minors anymore. While RBIs aren’t especially important, good on him, an undrafted free agent, for immediately contributing! Will be curious to watch him rise up the levels.
Also congrats on Phillip Glasser on a very well deserved promotion!
While Wood hasn’t done anything exceptional recently, he’s still putting up an extremely impressive .330/.435/.495 line in Rochester. After seeing his AVG bottom out at .248 and his K% rocket up to 33.7% last season, he’s made huge strides addressing both shortcomings. His AVG jumped .082 points and he’s cut his strikeouts down by 50% (22.2%)! The power has gone slightly missing. His ISO of .165 is the lowest at any level since rookie ball in 2021. If a few more of his 9 2Bs (4th most in the IL) turned into HRs, then there wouldn’t be anything to note. Still, it’s been a wildly impressive start to the season for him. Not sure how much longer the Nats can seriously trot out Eddie Rosario and his sub-.100 batting average.
Lastly, on our prospects in DC.
It’s been great to see Jacob Young already improve on his fantastic ’23 debut. According to FanGraphs, Young has recently surpassed Irvin as the Nats’ most valuable draft pick of the past decade, sitting at 1.5 WAR in only 52 games. That’s 4.5 WAR pace for a whole season! Is Young a 4-5 WAR player? Probably not. But even a 2-3 WAR player is immensely valuable.
Same story for Lipscomb, who seems to have adjusted something, and has gone 5 for 12 since his re-promotion. Lipscomb has been worth 0.3 WAR in 18 games, while it’s still very early, that too is 2.5 WAR pace, which would be another fantastic outcome!
While it’s been unfortunate to lose some vets in the majors, it’s a lot more fun watching the kids play. Parker, Young and Lipscomb each played big roles in the win yesterday. Viva la reconstrucion!
Pimentel and Glasser have been fun to follow early this season. Also rooting for former Gator, Jacob Young, among others!
Jacob Young us 5th on the Nats in WAR!
Swwweeeet ! Lara 6 IP 7 Ks
And against a Brooklyn bunch
Glasser is the gas!
