• Baker 1-1, R, RBI

In the continuation, which was delayed by rain, the Red Wings rallied from a 5-1 deficit with three in the 9th to walk off the Mud Hens, 6-5. Spenser Watkins “started” but was ineffective, allowing five runs on seven hits (two HR) and two walks over four innings. The win went to Methusel…uh, Luis Reyes as he got the last five outs for Rochester and issued one walk. Travis Blankenhorn got the party started in the bottom of the 9th with his second extra-base hit, a leadoff triple to the right-centerfield warning track. A groundout scored Blankenhorn. Jake Alu walked and took second on a slow roller to short. Darren Baker delivered the second run with pinch-hit RBI single, moved up to second on an Erick Mejia walk, and scored on Alex Call’s two-out, game-winning double.

Toledo 7 Rochester 3
• Gsellman (L, 0-1) 4IP, 3H, 5R, 5ER, 2BB, 7K, HR

In the nightcap, Toledo wasted no time against spot starter Robert Gsellman with grand slam in the 1st as they split the twinbill with a 7-3 win. Gsellman finished with five runs allowed on three hits and two while setting down seven on strikes. James Wood and Darren Baker both went 1-for-4 with three RBI combined as Rochester tallied five hits and three walks on offense.

Richmond 6 Harrisburg 2
• Alvarez (L, 0-2) 4⅔ IP, 5H, 5R, 4ER, 5BB, 3K

• House 2-3, 2R, BB, 3B, HR, RBI, E
• Suggs 2-4

The wheels came off the bus in the 5th as Richmond broke open a 2-1 game with a four-spot en route to tripling up Harrisburg, 6-2. Andrew Alvarez lost again, charges with five runs (four earned) on five hits and five walks over four and 2/3rds. He struck out three. Brady House tripled, homered, and walked, Matt Suggs singled twice in four trips to the plate, and Cortland Lawson went 1-for-3 with an RBI. The rest of the Senators went 0-for-20.

Wilmington 6 Greenville 4
• Caceres 4+ IP, 4H, 4R, 4ER, 2BB, 3K, HBP, WP

• McKenzie 3-4, R, 2B, SB
• Made 2-3, 2RBI, SAC
• Brown 2-4, R, RBI

The Blue Rocks broke open a 2-1 game with four in the 4th and kept the Drive in park in the late innings for a 6-4 win. Bryan Caceres gave up all four Greenville runs on four hits, two walks, and a Robles over four-plus innings. Chance Huff stranded a runner in the 5th then pitched a scoreless 6th to pick up the win. Marquis Grissom put up two goose eggs for the hold, his third in four appearances, while Todd Peterson got the save (also #3).

Fayetteville 4 Fredericksburg 0
• Atencio (L, 1-1) 5IP, 8H, 2R, 2ER, 0BB, 7K
• S. Vasquez 2IP, 0H, 0R, 2BB, 1K
• Quintana 1-2, BB
• Colmenares 1-3

For the second time in three games the Fredericksburg bats were AWOL as Fayetteville shut them out, 4-0, on two hits. Jose Atencio took the loss as he let in two runs on eight hits over five innings. He walked none and struck out seven. Jose Colmenares broke up the shutout with a two-out single in the 4th while Roismar Quintana led off the 8th for the FredNats’ second hit. Neither struck out while the rest of Fredericksburg lineup kept the Woodpeckers infielders cool with 16 whiffs.

    Attention on Atencio.
Meanwhile what name does a NHL franchise get in Salt Lake ?

Atencio throws everything but the kitchen sink and looking at him I think that’s the room where he spent most of the offseason. I liked watching him when he came up but he needs to get north of DC to see what they’ve got with him

the hitters have been Jekyll or Hyde so far. maybe working on things with the new batting coach. once the oldsters get moved along (hopefully) it will be a youthful lineup

good Friday night on the mounds for real prospect viewing. Herz and Henry need to zone it in and it would be nice to see them loosen the reins a bit on Susana. he has gotten a lot of ground ball outs and limited his walks so maybe they have a plan.

Really like what I’m seeing from Made and McKenzie so far this season, after stinkers last year. I think many others like myself forgot how good McKenzie was in a short time in 2022, hitting .400/.425/.614, before seeing his AVG drop to .212. Well, look at it this season: .435/.440/.609. Look familiar? Despite hitting .435, he’s still struggling with his plate discipline, not taking a walk yet, while striking out 28% of the time, and his career is 5.8 BB% and 27.4 K%. Needless to say, he needs to stop walking at one fifth the frequency he strikes out, but I can’t complain too much when he’s hitting .435!

Made too has bounced back nicely, hitting .333 (a .196 point increase on last season!). But unlike McKenzie, he’s walking up a storm. He’s walked 11 times now (compared to only 9 Ks), for a 22 BB% in the short season. Still waiting for the power to develop as scouts have predicted though… He’s only got one XBH (a 2B) so far this season.

the Cubs pushed Made to A+ at 19, they must have seen something. I’ll give him a pass for last year after the trade. that can be disruptive for a young prospect

On the downside, it’s sad to see how Denaburg’s career has developed. He’ll likely soon break the 9 BB/9IP mark. He currently sits at 94 BB through exactly 100 IP, but has already accrued 7 BB in 4.1 IP this season, to go with an unsightly 3.46 WHIP, which somehow makes his 6.23 ERA look good… Deep into his age 24 season, and still only at Fburg, it’s sad to see a really bright first rounder not just implode, but never even get off the ground in the first place.

    Another reminder of TINSTAAPP
