Saturday’s News & Notes

March 30, 2024
Team Yesterday Today Pitching Matchup (’23 Stats at the Level)
Rochester Lost, 6-3 @ Syracuse, 1:05 p.m. Parker (0-1, 10.45) Ward (0-0, 6.37 @ MLB) vs. Buttó (3-7, 5.93)

Syracuse 6 Rochester 3
• Adon (L, 0-1) 2⅓ IP, 4H, 4R, 2ER, 3BB, 2K, HBP
• Bleier 1⅓ IP, 1H, 0R, 0BB, 1K, 2-0 IR-S
• Alu 2-4, R
• Dunn 2-4, RBI

Joan Adon made his second straight Opening Day start for the Red Wings, but didn’t make it out of the 3rd as Syracuse doubled up Rochester, 6-3 to take the AAA season opener. Adon let in four runs (two earned) om four hits and three walks and a Robles over two and a 1/3rd. He struck out two. The “assist” went to Robert Gsellman, who coughed up back-to-back big flies in the 4th. Jake Alu, Carter Kieboom, and Jack Dunn each went 2-for-4 while James Wood connected for Rochesters’s sole extra-base hit, a double in the 8th.
Roster moves: Officially none, but multiple sources are reporting that IF Trey Lipscomb will replace IF Nick Senzel when the Nats get around to putting him on the I.L.

James Wood’s double was a ground ball that should have been ruled foul per Josh Whetzel on the radio broadcast. Hopefully, Wood gets back to making the quality contact he had in ST in the next one. Never like to see a top prospect with a Sombrero his first time out.

Hooray for opening day, and something regular to follow.

My immediate hot take was “Adon being Adon,” but then I saw that Kieboom had an error that sort of opened the floodgates in the 2d. Sigh. It sure would be great if both Adon and Kieboom could finally figure things out. Maybe being off the 40-man will help ease the pressure on them.

I wonder which Rochester starter will be converted to relief first. Adon making a solid opening bid.

Surprising to see Wood’s swing and miss tendencies back so quickly. Cutting out down strikeouts in ST was the single most impressive thing about his performance (22.8%, compared to a steady 30+% last season). But I guess all those small sample size caveats always apply.

Wood 3 walks on a Saturday afternoon
      He’s respected !

Adon and Gray both pitched in relatively similar climates
Cold winds off the Ohio River and Upstate New York
We have a pretty good idea the squad Delino Sr will have for Sens
Now Wilmington . Jonathan Thomas ‘ speed seems perfect for the Grand Canyon . Dermis Garcia would seem to be an ok spare part on Blue Rox .. yet again ???

I though it was interesting that Parker was held out of both of the showplace games. I think he has a better chance of remaining a starter than Herz, albeit a slim chance.

      Agree FredMD
      This next amateur draft should
Lasseo a prime lefty starting prospect even witha Demon Deacon pedigree
      Birthday wish a day early
Fred MD flesh out your Wilmington and Fred lineups and Benches
Not to jump ahead to late August too fast but some of us will be intrigued how several months mature the prospect conga line up the ladder
Just what outfield trio will Delino be penciling in as the EL season winds down ??

@Will – the same SSS caveat for ST stats is true in spades for results from a single game

Of course it is, that’s why I wrote that.

Well that answers that. Watkins is healthy, but appears to be the Red Wings’ long relief guy.
