Nats Fold Cards; First Cuts Announced
The bullpen fell apart in the late innings, but here’s the switch – it was the Cards, not the Nats, who faltered to turn a 4-1 lead into an 11-4 loss this afternoon.
Jacob Young was the sole watchlister in the starting lineup as the 24-y.o. played CF and batted ninth. He went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run scored.
Washington rallied for one in the 6th, four in the 6th, and five in th 8th with the majoriy of the damage done by the guys coming off the bench:
- James Wood subbed for Lane Thomas in RF in the 6th and was 0-for-1 with a strikeout. He was hit by a pitch in the 7th and came arond to score. In the 8th, he struck out.
- Drew Millas was the second backstop and went 1-for-2 with a double and two RBI.
- Brady House replaced Nick Senzel at 3B and was 2-for-2 with a stolen base and a run scored.
- Trey Lipscomb followed Luis García Jr. and was 1-for-2 with a walk and two runs scored.
- Dylan Crews subbed for Young in CF and went 0-for-1 with a walk and strikeout.
The win brought the Nats back to .500 at 8-8. The rubber-armed TBD is listed as the starter for tomorrowe night’s game vs. the Mets in West Palm Beach. The game will be broadcast locally on 106.7FM
Prior to the game, the Nats announced the first round of cuts:
OPTIONED TO ROCHESTER
• RHPs Joan Adon, Cole Henry, and Amos Willingham
• LHPs DJ Herz and Mitchell Parker
• UT Jake Alu
REASSIGNED TO MINOR-LEAGUE CAMP
• OF Travis Blankenhorn
Following the game, RHP Thad Ward, who was the winning pitcher for pitching the 6th ahead of the Nats taking the lead, was also optioned to Rochester. The Nats’ 2022 Rule 5 pick had been stashed on the IL and in the bullpen last summer and will reportedly be used again as a starting pitcher.
I guess the rumors of Adon’s 4th option are true, for whatever reason. The cuts yesterday would seem to be the Rochester rotation: Adon, Henry, Parker, Herz, and Ward. Since they continue to insist that Trevor Williams is a starter, presumably Rutledge will be joining them. The unknown is whether they’ve tagged any of these guys as relievers.
Lipscomb continues to have an impressive spring. Nunez continues to prove that you can’t steal first base.
Young has had a good spring, but so has Call. Winker seems to be doing enough to make the team, and Rosario will as well unless he does nothing. Garrett hasn’t played yet so probably will start the season on IL. It still seems that the last OF spot will come down to Call or Young. If they don’t keep Nunez, Young’s speed off the bench could be useful.
KW Charlie Finleys Herb Washington couldn’t steal first either
Interesting to see how LeCroy and the old loogie pitching coach Beltran utilizes the numerous arms at ROCH especially
Watkins and Ferrell who I think one day will be a pitching guru .
Remember that ST stats don’t mean squat. The sample size is too small and there are too many variables. Yes, Call is having a good spring. He led the team in OPS in ST 2023, and yet was still, well, Alex Call during the season. Brady House went 2-2 yesterday. Yay! He was on the lucky side of BABIP as he hit a couple of “dying quails” over the infield. Nunez smoked a ball that ended up being a line out to the LF. Who had the better day?
Another reminder: the team has a lot more data/information on these guys than we do. No matter how large our TVs are as we watch from our recliners. Heck, even more than our internet searches!
Fred Md MD are you looking forward to watching Moises Gallardo roam in the Fred OF this spring ?
can’t figure out how he was available at 20
