Nats Make a Few More Minor-League Signs

February 19, 2024

While we may not know the corresponding moves yet (if any), the Nats have signed some pitchers for some upper-minors depth:

  • LHP Richard Bleier
  • RHP Luke Farrell
  • RHP Robert Gsellman
  • RHP Steve Nogosek

These are the moves reported by Baseball America in its latest transaction post. Other notable transactions this month, reported elsewhere:

  • Signed RHP Adonis Medina
  • Signed RHP Jacob Barnes*
  • Signed RHP Zach Davies*
  • Signed OF Jesse Winker*
  • Signed RHP Luis Perdomo*

* Reportedly also invited to ST as an NRI
Many of these nAAAAmes are familiar to us, with Bleier having pitched for Harrisburg ans Syracuse in 2015, while others (e.g., Medina, Farrell) have pitched against the Nats’ AA and AAA teams over the past few seasons.

I’m really surprised to see that Bleier has accumulated 5.7 bWAR across the years. What a baseball lifer, didn’t make the majors until age 29.

On the flip side, even though we’re quite familiar with Gsellman from all his years with the Mets, it’s also surprising to see that his career bWAR is -0.3.

I’ve got them all as MLFAs, so no corresponding 40-man moves needed. Spring training has started … but the Nats have yet to move the obvious 60-man candidates. It seems like they could make 4 slots immediately available by moving Strasburg, Cavalli, Brzycky, and perhaps Thompson there right now.

I may have this wrong, but I thought a team couldn’t add guys to the 60-man IL until the start of the season. I know that they have to add them back to the 40-man at the end of the season.

I don’t know the options status of everyone, but I know that Kieboom and Adon are out and will be iffy to make the roster, so that would be two more 40-man slots.

KW, you can move players to the 60 day IL on the first day of spring training.

Exactly, which is why there was a small flurry of signings that occurred in the past couple days (Soler, Hendriks, Grichuk, etc.) as teams secured new spots on their rosters.

Don’t know what’s taking the Nats so long. But that appears to be their mantra this offseason.

Thanks, Mark. Good to know. With the current crop of NRI’s, there should be no rush to add them to the roster, though. There are no sure things in the bunch who have been brought in on minor-league contracts. The same certainly could be said of MLB signees Senzel, Gallo, and Floro as well.

(Senzel, Gallo, and Floro are all already on the 40-man but could be released before the end of the spring and only owed a fraction of the contract.)

Todd I wholeheartedly agree that I too miss the SS leagues .
Elijah could have used time in a SS league for sure

Keith Law has railed about the cutting of the SS leagues have really stunted the growth of many players. Elijah Green is the perfect example.

Not a more beautful setting than Jamestown NY in NY/ Penn League
