Let the Games Begin
Unlike football, this is never too soon. Just one more day of breathless stories about batting practice.

You can tune in to the nationals feed on MLB.com tomorrow night to hear Charlie & Dave, or set the DVR for the tape-delay on MLB Network at 10 p.m. By the way, the MLB interns got around to updating the page referenced here so you won’t have to wait until next Wednesday for the first live broadcast.
I’d like to think that expectations will be for a .500 team in DC, and perhaps for the next wave (i.e., “our guys”) to be brought up when they’re ready and not be rushed. But the beat writers are already focusing on Dylan Crews and proclaiming Cole Henry fully healthy, so that might be wishful thinking.
Speaking of specious, that’ll be me covering ST for about 2-3 weeks as time allows, which means getting back to posting almost every day instead of every four or five. Once most of the minor-leaguers have been sent to the backfields, we’ll pull back. With the longer AAA and AA seasons, there won’t be much of a break.
Last but not least, a shoutout to e-migo Todd Boss, who ran down the Nats’ options situation (so I don’t have to π that GMs across the league pretend won’t affect the construction of the Opening Day roster.
what a difference a year makes. I think we’ve gone a month without a noteworthy discussion of Jake Alu
Belated Happy β Golden β Birthday , Jake Irwin . 27 on 27 .
Is it too far fetched to think about Luis Reyes being a β player / mentor β at Harrisburg to eat some early season innings as the young guys develop at Wilmington ?
Alu’s power dried up last year, from 40 doubles and 20 homers across all levels in 2022 to 27 and 7 in 2023. He had fewer plate appearances, but still a notable drop in SLG, from .553 at Rochester in 2022 to .420 in 2023. He got a fairly extended look at the MLB level, particularly when they sent Garcia to AAA, but didn’t do much to distinguish himself. Hopefully he was able to work on the holes in his game over the offseason.
Luke you need more dogs to model all the hats the Nats want to flood the market with .
Fred mad youβre correct . The narration has moved away from names such as Alu to the second squad which lined up two days ago .β The young Senators β.
Great piece Todd on the β options β for later in March .
Interesting to see how many of these names end up on LECroys Opening Day roster : Alu , Blakenhorn , Winkler , Lewis , Meijia, the B&B combo of Barclay and Baker . Yes Todd that pitching staff could end up being rather β¦ studly.
Now the relievers will get moved around like chess pieces especially the Rule 5 guys who might end up on Sens to flesh out that staff.
Later in March interesting to hear the progress of Lara , Young , Sullivan , Shuman and other Fred arms
Herz has been penciled in for tonights action albeit against other teams non-roster guys. A few others may get the chance to clean up a starters unfinished inning and get a match-up against a major leaguer.
Anon needs to impress each and every time out.
