Wednesday’s News & Notes

September 20, 2023
Team Yesterday Today Pitching Probables
Rochester Lost, 19-1 @ Indianapolis, 1:35 p.m. T. Romero (5-6, 5.27) vs. Shortridge (AAA Debut)

Indianapolis 19 Rochester 1
• Parker (L, 0-1) 3⅓ IP, 7H, 7R, 7ER, 3BB, 7K, 2HR
• Javier 2IP, 7H, 7R, 3ER, 0BB, 2K, 3-3 IR-S
• Hill 2-3, R, BB, HR, RBI
• Lindsly 1-3

Derek Hill’s one-out HR gave the Red Wings a 1-0 in the top of the 1st. Things did not get any better as Indianapolis defenestrated Rochester, 19-1. Mitchell Parker did not fare any better in his second AAA outing, giving up seven runs on seven hits (two HR) and three walks over three and a 1/3rd innings to take the loss, his first at AAA and seventh overall. He walked three and struck out seven.

Neither Odalvi Javier (7R, 2IP) nor Tyler Schoff (3R, 1IP) fared any better, which led to Jack Dunn mopping up in the 7th and 8th. He was the least ineffective pitcher with two runs over one and 2/3rds innings. Hill also singled in the 4th and drew one of the Red Wings’ three (3) walks. Brady Lindsly rounded out the Rochester hit column with a safety in the 8th.

Roster moves: OF Blake Rutherford recalled to Washington; RHP Tyler Schoff reassigned from Harrisburg; RHP Luis Reyes placed on the 7-Day I.L.

CORY ABBOTT NAMED I.L. PITCHER OF THE WEEK

Rochester RHP Cory Abbott got an early birthday present as the 28-y.o. (today) was named the International League’s Pitcher of the Week for Sept. 11-17. The 2017 2nd Rd. pick for the Cubs tossed five scoreless innings with one walk and six whiffs last Tuesday, which earned him his third AAA win. This was the first POTW award for Rochester this season.

JAMES WOOD NAMED E.L. PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Harrisburg OF James Wood was named the Easterm League Player of the Week as he wen 9-for-20 with a HR, two doubles, a stolen base, and six RBI in five games. The Nats #2 Prospect had previously won POTW with Wilmington for May 8-14.

DAYLEN LILE NAMED TO CAROLINA LEAGUE POSTSEASON ALL-STAR TEAM

Daylen Lile, Washington’s 2nd Rd. pick in the 2021 Draft, was named the Carolina League Postseason All-Star team. The 20-y.o. posted a line of .291/.381/.510 with seven HR, seven triples, 21 steals, and 48 RBI in 66 games. How high of a curve do you give Wilmington batters? Daylin Lile’s ‘more modest’ .667 OPS at Wilmington th .727 OPS in normal stats. At least.

I think Jeff called it Grand Canyon

Think what Willie Mays would have done at Yankee Stadium vs Polo Grounds .

Does Luis Reyes be one part of the player development staff in the minors this off season ?

I can’t find Lile’s home/road splits just for Wilmington, but there’s a significant gap for the whole season:

    Home: .249/.345/.398, 3 HR, 11 doubles, 5 triples
    Away: .289/.365/.505, 6 HR, 16 doubles, 5 triples

I guess we’re hoping that “Away” is who he really is. Much as with Hassell, questions will remain whether he can generate enough HR power to play a corner OF position.

Ouch. Rough introduction for Parker and Schoff to AAA…

Yes. Parker is giving them some latitude if they want to consider not protecting him ahead of the Rule 5 draft.
