Tuesday’s News & Notes

September 5, 2023
Team Yesterday Today Pitching Probables
Rochester OFF DAY @ Syracuse, 6:35 p.m. Peralta (3-8, 6.31) vs. Lucchesi (6-5, 4.64)
Romero (5-5, 5.54) vs. D. Reyes (1-2, 5.80)
Harrisburg OFF DAY @ Altoona, 6 p.m. Saenz (3-5, 4.79) vs. Wolf (0-2, 3.43)
Wilmington OFF DAY @ Brooklyn, 7 p.m. Cáceres (0-5, 8.80) vs. Ventura (3-2, 4.28)
Fredericksburg OFF DAY @ Delmarva, 7:05 p.m. Cornelio (4-7, 4.80) vs. Cruz (8-4, 3.74)

Rochester Red Wings, 26-30, 7th place I.L. East, 8½ GB – 60-69 Overall
Prior to 2020, we’d talkin’ now about who else might be joining the big club this week. Instead, there are three more weeks for Rochester, with maybe an opportunity for one or two guys from Harrisburg to be “promoted” for the final week of the season on Sept 19-24. Until then, it’s six this week at Syracuse with a matinee on Wednesday.

Harrisburg Senators, 24-33, 6th place E.L. Southwest, 9GB – 55-70 Overall
Why maybe? Because this team hasn’t scored more than four runs in back-to-back games since August 12-13, which, not coincidentally, is the last time the Senators have won back-to-back games. Harrisburg remains on the road with a trip to Altoona this week.

Wilmington Blue Rocks, 24-36, 6th Place, 10GB, Sally Lg. North – 53-71 Overall
Wilmington has won eight of its last 10 games, which will only be remembered here… maybe. The Blue Rocks close out the season with six against the Cyclones.

Fredericksburg Nationals, 31-28, 3rd Place, 4½ GB, C.L. North – 61-61 Overall
The purpose of the minors is to develop, not to win, and the Washington Nationals made sure of it by trotting out its tired ’23 draft picks with the FredNats instead of the starters who have been pound… um, never mind. The exception of late has been Luke Young, who was stellar on Saturday night and that earned him a Carolina Pitcher of the Week award. Fredericksburg closes out the season with seven against Delmarva, including a doubleheader scheduled for tomorrow night.

Who gets promoted to Rochester to play in front of 100 fans in sept ??

Honestly, none of them deserve it based off the past month.

Even the arms that still have some mileage left on them would be better as AFL options than for a brief meaningless promotion.

I agree that most of the guys would benefit more from AFL than Rochester. Among the pitchers, Parker threw 100.0 innings in 2022 and is at 108.2 in 2023 with another start with week. If the belief is that you don’t want to stretch them more than 20-25% over the previous season, he might could still get in a few of those three-inning AFL starts. Herz seems like an AFL lock, has he hasn’t even reached his 2022 innings total (95.1 in ’22, 84.1 thus far in ’23). Alvarez is already past the recommended increase (84.2 up to 118.1), and Saenz is getting close (97.0/112.1).

I’ll vote for Jackson Cluff, he gets moved all over the field, plays great defense every night and has an OPS greater than league average (thanks to an 18% walk rate)

It’s amazing what happened to Wilmington when Morales and Pinckney joined. A real jolt.
