Rochester 2 Scranton/Wilkes-Barre 1
• Hernandez (W, 1-1) 5IP, 6H, 1R, 1ER, 2BB, 7K
• G. Moreno (SV, 10) 1IP, 0H, 0R, 0BB, 1K
• Downs 3-4, R, 2-2B, 2RBI
• Martin 3-4, 2B
The Red Wings found the right bullpen combo as five relievers combined for four scoreless inning to cinch a 2-1 win over the RailRiders. Alemao Hernandez earned his first AAA win with the lone Scranton/Wilkes-Barre run allowed on six hits and two walks over five innings. He struck out seven. The save went to Gerson Moreno with a (*gasp*) 1-2-3 ninth, following Luis Reyes, Tim Cate, Amos Willingham, and Joe La Sorsa who each earned a hold and put the tying run on (without letting it score, natch). Jeter Downs went 3-for-4 at the plate and 2-for-3 making it to second safely on those hits. Richie Martin also had three hits while Brady Lindsly and Darren Baker each had an RBI single. Roster moves: RHP Junior Fernández assigned from Washington (released by Buffalo, 8/22); RHP Luis Cessa released; C Onix Vega reassigned from Harrisburg; 1B-DH Matt Adams placed on the 7-Day I.L.
Binghamton 1 Harrisburg 0
• Saenz 6IP, 4H, 0R, 1BB, 5K, WP
• Knowles (L, 4-2) 1IP, 1H, 1R, 1ER, 2BB, 1K
• Wood 1-2, 2BB
• Cluff 1-2, 2BB, 2B, CS(5)
Harrisburg’s offensive woes continued with yet another shutout, this one by a 1-0 count on four (4) hits. Dustin Saenz thus had six shutout innings result in a no-decision with four hits and a walk while fanning five. The loss went to Lucas Knowles with a walk and a double in the 7th. Donovan Casey took over for Dylan Crews in RF after the Nats #1 prospect got on first base the hard way. The Senators would have a baserunner in every inning and got five of them into scoring position, two all the way to third base, but were 0-for-5 with RISP. Jsckson Cluff had the sole extra-base hit (double) and walked twice as did James Wood with a single to lead the Sens barrage. Roster moves: RHP Odalvi Javier placed on the Development List; RHP José Mujica reassigned from Rochester to Harrisburg; C Wilmer Perez reassigned from Fredericksburg.
Wilmington 6 Hudson Valley 3
• Ward 4+ IP, 4H, 3R, 3ER, 2BB, 5K, HR, HBP, 2WP
• D. Díaz (W, 3-4) 2IP, 1H, 0R, 0BB, 1K, 2-0 IR-S
• Peterson (SV, 6) 1IP, 0H, 0R, 0BB, 1K
• Lile 2-3, BB, 3B, 2RBI
• Morales 1-3, 2R, BB
• McKenzie 1-3, BB
The Blue Rocks built an early 6-0 lead and got five solid innings from the bullpen to double up the Renegades, 6-3. Thad Ward made his second rehab start and was dinged for all three Hudson Valley runs on four hits (one HR) and two walks over four-plus innings. Dannel Díaz cleaned up Ward’s mess in the 5th and put up another goose egg in the 6th to get the “W,” his third. Matt Merrill matched him for the hold while Todd Peterson set the side down in order in the 9th for the save. Daylen Lile walked, tripled, singled, and drove in two while Yohandy Morales singled walked and scored twice to lead the Wilmington offense.
Fredericksburg 4 Lynchburg 3
• Sthele 3⅔ IP, 6H, 3R, 3ER, 1BB, 2K, WP
• K. Rodriguez 3⅓ IP, 3H, 0R, 0BB, 1K, 1-0 IR-S
• Grissom (W, 4-2) 2IP, 1H, 0R, 0BB, 4K
• M. Romero 3-4, 3R, 2HR, 2RBI
• Vaquero 2-4, SB
Max Romero Jr. walked ’em off with his second HR of the night as the Fredericksburg bettered Lynchburg, 4-3. Travis Sthele started and dug another hole, this one for three runs on six hits and a walk over three and a 1/3rd innings. Kevin Rodriguez stuck to the script of the night and stranded a runner while getting out of the 4th and then threw three scoreless innings. Marquis Grissom Jr. added two more goose eggs and picked up the win. Romero also singled and scored three times while Christhian Vaquero singled twice and stole a base to power the FredNats attack. Roster moves: C Geraldi Diaz reassigned from Wilmington.
The sudden power outage in Harrisburg has been puzzling. The team has two top 10 prospects, and two other top 100 prospects in spots 1-4 of their line up. Over the past 6 games, the Senators have had 2, 5, 7, 10, 2 and 4 hits to go 30 for 188 (.160) and scored 1, 2, 1, 7, 0 and 0 runs, with 5 of the 6 games coming against Reading, who somehow have a worse record than Harrisburg. And here I was expecting a Harrisburg to put up 10 runs per game per game… Silly me.
Worth asking
Does Lucas G fit in this retool
?
I see him as a solid #3 starter. can he be signed for the amount you’d expect to pay for this type of production? I doubt it
Don’t think the Nats will spend the cash needed to sign Giolito, but I get the feeling that the Nats are going to shutdown Irvin, Gora and Gray pretty soon.
So, rather than force a few starts on Jackson Rutledge or some other prospect that is not ready, I could see the Nats picking up a vet off waivers to just eat innings in September. Giolito is too pricey, but could see the Nats going outside of the organization before tomorrow deadline for an arm.
I don’t think many folks thought Irvin was ready
Me too FREd Md
for all the good contact Lipscomb has shown his plate discipline issues materialized in the eighth when he had runners on 2nd and 3rd and one out. a weak swing on a pitch low and away results in a pop up.
Would it be possible to surgically combine Green’s power with Vaquero’s plate discipline? Asking for a friend . . . (By listed size, Green outweighs Vaquero by 45 pounds, at the same height.)
Vaquero doesn’t turn 19 until next month, so there’s still plenty of time for him to grow into some power. His plate discipline and speed remain impressive. Green struck out three more times last night. He’s also still just a teenager, until December. Age/development-wise he’s still got plenty of time. But they’ve got to figure out how to make contact more a part of his game.
I guess the assumption is that both of these guys will start in Fredericksburg again next spring. You can’t really promote Green with a .214 average and hope for the best. There are now a bunch of outfielders ahead of them in the system, so there’s no real rush. Take the time to try to maximize the talent.
not to argue your point but Green’s issue is contact not plate discipline, he misses pitches in the zone rather than chasing. I’m not sure which is more troubling.
to my untrained eye I’d say Green needs to get loaded earlier. maybe he ends up swinging at a few more balls but maybe he makes contact more often.
On the “bright side”, Green has “only” struck out 36% (13 of 36) since his return to Fredericksburg. On the downside, he’s hit .185/.371/.259 in this period.
I really don’t know what the Nats should do with him at this point. Hopefully, they develop a comprehensive training plan (and actively follow up with him on it) over the off season, because Green hasn’t shown any progress this season. If anything, he’s regressed as the season has gone on.
West Palm Beach is lovely during the winter
