The Red Wings nearly dug themselves out of a 7-0 hole but the extra point sailed wide in the 9th as they fell to the IronPigs, 14-13. Alex Troop was drummed out after failing to retire any of the seven batters he faced. He would lose his first AAA game. The first first three men out of the Rochester ‘pen weren’t much less ineffective, as Lehigh Valley built a 14-8 lead to 14-8 the IronPigs ‘pen returned the favor. Jack Dunn smacked a three-run HR in the 8th while Travis Blankenhorn cashed in a two-out walk by Carter Kieboom in the 9th for his fourth and fifth RBI. Drew Millas, who drove in three with a single and a double, flew out to end the game. Roster moves: RHP Amos Willingham optioned from Washington.

Lucas Knowles picked up the win with three innings pitched with one hit and walk allowed while striking out two. Believe it or not, it was 6-6 going into extras when the F-Nats broke out for eight runs in the top of the 10th then gave five of them back in the bottom of the 10th for a 14-11 hot mess of a win. Jefrem Leon started and was knocked from the box in the 3rd, charged with five runs (two earned) on three hits and a walk. He struck out one (1). Niomar Gomez was the winning thrower despite giving up five runs on four hits in the 10th though he didn’t walk a batter or strike out a batter. Speaking of whiffs, Eiljah Green made reached base three times in three PA without a strikeout! Jorgelys Mota led the 18-hit parade with two singles and two doubles while driving in four.
DSL Colorado 3 DSL Nationals 2 – COMP.
• H. Moreno 3⅓ IP, 3H, 0R, 3BB, 4K
• Oliveros (BS, 1L, 0-5) 2IP, 3H, 3R, 2ER, 0BB, 1K
• E. Soto 2-3, 2B
• Tejeda 1-2, BB
The DSL Nationals had two chances to get back one of the runs coughed up in the top of the 6th and made six outs in the space of six batters with a double play erasing a ROE on a throwing error.
J.T. Arruda made several outstanding plays in the hole at 2nd base to keep the no hitter in tact. Home runs by Hassell and Wood were both to the opposite field. Sens playing their best ball of the year right now.
Munoz will be one to watch finish up the season, he’s the youngest pitcher on the Wings roster, unlike typical waiver claims. as almost always, the key will be improving his command
Glad you highlighted Green’s strikeoutless performance. It was just the 8th time in 60 games this season he’s done that. Still, he now has only struck out once in 6 plate appearances in 2 games since he
re-tooled his swingrecovered from an injurydisappeared for a while, which is very encouraging.Another positive injury(?) related development is Hassell’s HR. His plate (in)discipline is still extremely concerning, but he’s now hit 3 HR in his past 15 games (as well as 4 2B). Before that, it took him 59 games in AA to hit 3 HR, so maybe we’re beginning to see the signs of his wrist recovering. I hope so! With that said, the splits between the first 59 games and the last 15 are really interesting, if just for how consistent they are besides the power boost:
First 59 G: .225/.314/.303, 30.2 K%, 11.7 BB%
Last 15 G: .211/.333/.439, 29.0 K%, 10.1 BB%
Which makes it increasingly evident it’s not just the wrist that’s affecting Hassell…
Lastly, Blankenhorn has taken up the insane-hot-streak mantle since Rutherford got promoted. Blankenhorn is now hitting .330/.444/.651 over his past 29 games, including a particularly hot streak of .450/.560/1.100 over his past 5 games.
What’s up with Matt Cronin? It was reported on that he had back surgery last week for a herniated disc. That’s really unfortunate and all, but I just saw he’s never been placed on the Injured List. He has no movement attached to his name this entire season. He’s sat on Rochester’s active roster since not pitching a single game since May 20th. Did someone just forget to change his status? Why would a club not add a player to the 60 day IL? They could even do it retroactively, since Cronin has been absent for over 80 days already. Cronin is on the 40 man roster, so wouldn’t this free up an additional spot for the Nats? Or is that exemption not allowed for players on the 40 man who are in the minors?
He’s on the 40-man. So, if you call him up to put him on the 60-day DL to get the roster spot, you
1. start his service clock
2. pay him MLB salary for the duration.
Instead they’re keeping him on the AAA 7-day DL.
What you describe may still happen, especially as the big club keeps adding names to their 10-day dl and we start running out of able-bodies and need a 40-man spot.
Pitchers Liam Sullivan, 13th round, and Merrick Baldo, 17th round, have just been promoted to Fredericksburg.
James Wood is a homer shy of simultaneously leading both Wilmington and Harrisburg in homers. Not sure if that says more about him or the rest of the power on those teams.
