Buffalo 14 Rochester 8
• Peralta (L, 3-8) 3⅔ IP, 7H, 7R, 6ER, 6BB, 2K
• Witt 1IP, 2H, 0R, 1BB, 0K
• Noll 2-3, 4R, BB, HR, RBI, HBP
• García 2-5, R, HR, RBI
• Dunn 1-2, 3BB, RBI, SB
Rochester shut out Buffalo for three innings, two in succession. But the other five innings were in-game BP as the Bison outhit the Red Wings 16-7 and outscored them 14-8. Wily Peralta still has the Polaroids didn’t make it out of the 4th for the ninth time in 22 starts as he gave up seven runs on seven hits and six walks while striking out two. Paul Witt was the only pitcher worthy of the name as the journeyman scattered two hits in the 8th while getting three outs without a run scoring. Rochester drew a season-high 12 walks but were unable to make Buffalo pay with a measly 1-for-10 mark with RISP. Luis García and Jake Noll both hit solo HRs while Jack Dunn led the walkers with three base-on-balls.
Richmond 4 Harrisburg 0
• Alvarez (L, 0-1) 5IP, 3H, 2R, 2ER, 3BB, 2K, PTV, E
• Young 3-5, 2SB
• Hassell 2-4, SAC, CS(5)
• 1-12 RISP; 12 LOB
Andrew Alvarez’s AA debut was good enough to perhaps win with some luck or some run support. He got neither as the Senators were shut out for the tenth time, 4-0, on eight hits. That was four more than the Flying Squirrels got, but Richmond managed to make Harrisburg pay for issuing seven walks, committing two errors, and hitting two batters. Alvarez turned five innings of two-run ball on three hits and three walks while striking out two and taking the loss. Jacob Young singled three times and stole two bases (second and third in the 1st) while Robert Hassell singled twice and Jackson Cluff, Lucius Fox, and J.T. Arruda each singled once. Roster moves: RHP Reid Schaller placed on the Development List; LHP Andrew Alvarez promoted from Wilmington (both moves effectve 8/17).
Aberdeen 7 Wilmington 6
• A. Lara 4IP, 2H, 1R, 1ER, 2BB, 2K, HR, WP
• Powell (BS, 2; L, 1-4) ⅔ IP, 2H, 4R, 4ER, 2BB, 1K
• Donovan 1BF, 1H, 1-1 IR-S
• Infante 3-4, 2R, 2B, HR, RBI
• Lawson 2-5, R, 3B, RBI
• Stehly 2-5, RBI
Wilmington was given a second chance to blow a 6-2 lead and this time Blue Rocks ‘pen delivered, coughing up four in the 9th to lose, 7-6. The blown-save-loss went to Holden Powell with two hits and two walks allowed in the 9th and an assist from Dakota Donovan who served up the game-winner to the one and only batter he faced. Andry Lara would have had a no-decision anyway as the 20-y.o. needed 70 pitches to get 12 outs and gave up a run on a home run and two hits total over four innings. He walked two and struck out two. Sammy Infante singled, doubled, and homered while (the law firm of ) Cortland Lawson and Murphy Stehly both went 2-for-5 with an RBI to lead the Wilmington offense.
Augusta 15 Fredericksburg 7
• Rainey (L, 0-1) ⅔ IP, 3H, 2R, 2ER, 0BB, 0K
• Denaburg ⅔ IP, 3H, 4R, 2ER, 3BB, 0K, HBP, 2WP, 2-1 IR-S
• McHenry 1IP, 1H, 0R, 0BB, 0K
• Nuñez 2-4, 3R, BB, 3SB
• Quintana 2-5, 3RBI, 2E
• Morales 2-5, 2R, 2K
The FredNats couldn’t outhit their pitching again, giving up double digits for the 17th time in a 15-7 loss. Tanner Rainey “worked on some stuff” as the GreenJackets got three hits in the 1st and scored twice. Fredericksburg trotted out four relievers who gave up 13 runs over the next five innings before Jared Simpson and Orlando Ribalta put up goose eggs in the 7th and 8th and John McHenry mopped up in the 9th with only a hit allowed in his pro pitching debut. Elijah Nuñez reaached base three times and stole three bases while Roismar Quintana and Yohandy Morales both went 2-for-5 with two runs scored (Morales) and three RBI (Quintana) to power the FredNats offense.
• Ward 3IP, 1H, 0R, 1BB, 5K, 2HBP
• M. Gomez (BS, 1; L, 1-2) 2⅓ IP, 5H, 5R, 2ER, 1BB, 1K. HR
• Mota 2-5, 2R, 3B, 2RBI, 3K
• Green 1-4, 2R, BB, HR, 2RBI, 1K
• Vaquero 2-5, R, 2B, 2K
• Pimentel 2-3, BB, 2B, 3RBI
A 9-0 lead after five innings was too small for the FCL Nationals bullpen, which gave up 11 runs over the last four innings to lose, 11-10. Thad Ward started and went three scoreless, allowing one hit, one walk, and two Robles while striking out five. The blown-save-loss wento Miguel Gomez with the last five runs allowed (two earned) on five hits (one HR) and one walk over two and a 1/3rd innings, though a dishonorable mention goes to Camilo Sanchez with an equally Denaburg-esque five runs over two and 1/3rd on three hits and five walks. Brandon Pimentel reached base three times and drove in three while Elijah Green homered, walked, and drove in two to lead the F-Nats attack.
DSL Twins 3 DSL Nationals 3
• Portorreal 4IP, 1H, 1R, 0ER, 1BB, 5K
• E. Rivero 1⅔ IP, 0H, 2R, 0ER, 3BB, 3K
• C. Martina (BS, 1) ⅓ IP, 0H, 0R, 1BB, K, WP 2-1 IR-S
• Obispo 1-2, R, 2B, RBI
• Liriano 1-3, R, 2B
• Joaquin 1-3, R, 2B, E(20)
The D-Nats ‘pen blew a 3-1 lead with two runs in the bottom of the 6th before the rains came and perhaps saved them from their 39th loss. Instead, the DSL Nationals and DSL Twins tied at 3-3, securing a last-place finish for the D-Nats.
We’ve rarely had a chance to say thank goodness for the DSL squad, but their tie (after a blown lead) saved the farm from a whitewash. Pretty sweet win by the big club, though, with our guys Jake and Blake combining for five hits (all singles), four RBIs, and three runs scored.
Pretty decent start for Lara, toward the end of an overall disappointing season. He’s just 20, so there’s still time, but it does seem that having him “playing up” these last two seasons hasn’t been a good idea.
Good starts at A+ for Stehly (.338) and Lawson (.310). There was some question whether Northern Virginia native Lawson would hit at a pro, but he’s .285/.388/.379 across two levels, albeit a bit older for the levels (and Stehly is even older).
Trey Lipscomb was 0-5 last night, what a bummer.
It’s so sad what is going on with Mason Denaburg. His ERA is now 11.64 for the year.
The Angels have their 1st-round pick (#11 overall) in the majors. The Nats have their 1st-round pick, supposedly a generational hitter, wasting his time in low A. I don’t know that it would be best to rush Crews to the majors (although he probably could hit better than .196 Alex Call right now), but something in between would make more sense.
I wholeheartedly agree. When Nats drafted Strasburg they had him start in Harrisburg. Ryan Zimmerman only played a couple games in A ball before promoted to Harrisburg and then to Nats in September. If Crews is as good as advertised then get him to at least get him to Wilmington. I know Nats want to build their confidence, but…..
The Angels having their #1 pick in the majors is a sign of their utter desperation as they try to salvage their decision to NOT trade Ohtani. It’s not an aspirational goal. I expect that Crews will be moved up soon, although not soon enough for Nats fans to convince themselves that he is harboring some deep seeded resentment for being “held back.”
The next six college hitters taken after Crews in the draft are at A+ or higher.
Nice that Alvarez got promoted. Between trades, waiver wire and promotions, the Nats now have 9 LHPs at AA, 4 at AAA and 4 in the Majors. They also have 4 at A+ and 5 at A. (A couple of them are hurt, for the record.)
For an organization that had a self-claimed dearth of LHPs and started the season with zero LHP in the pen, it’s a pretty surprising turnaround and has clearly been a point of emphasis from them to adjust.
Just think what the Rangers did to David Clyde as a promotional stunt
Way to go Ward in your rehab !
Alvarez too
I suspect that with the FCL season ending this weekend, the Nats will move some of the better players – Vaquero, Green, Cooper, Mota – up and that will lead to moving Crews, Morales, Pinckney, etc… up a level. Should happen by Tuesday.
Odd what’s happening with Reid Schaller. After a rocky start to the season, he’s been absolutely dominating at AA since like mid-May. Hopefully he’s not seriously hurt. He looked like he was on the cusp of moving up, not being sat-down.
