* Starters who pitched the day after last night’s starters pitched last week
Rochester 4 Durham 3
• Ureña (W, 1-2) 5IP, 4H, 1R, 1ER, 3BB, 4K, HR, WP, PTV
• G. Moreno (H, 7) 2IP, 0H, 0R, 0BB, 4K, 2-1 IR-S
• Cessa (SV, 1) 1IP, 0H, 0R, 0BB, 0K
• Hill 2-3, R, SF, RBI, SB
• Millas 1-3, BB, RBI
Rochester built an early 4-0 lead with some timely hitting (two sacrifice flies) and got just enough pitching to hold on for 4-3 win. José Ureña pitched into the 5th for the 11th time and gave up fewer than two runs for the first time on a solo HR and four hits total. He walked three and struck out four. Gerson Moreno let in one of two inherited runners but held the lead for Luis Cessa, who turned in his first clean outing with a 1-2-3 ninth and got the save. Derek Hill extended his hit streak to eight games with two singles and drove in the deciding run with a sac fly in the 4th while Jeter Downs and Blake Rutherford both had a double and Drew Millas and Jake Alu each had a single.
Harrisburg 10 Bowie 3
• Henry 1⅔ IP, 2H, 2R, 2ER, 2BB, 1K, 2HR, 43-20 PIT-K

• Harris 2-4, 2R
• Tostado 2-5, 3B, 2RBI
• House 2-5, R
The Senators delivered big hits in the clutch early (no, really) to build a 5-2 lead after two and cruised to 10-3 win over the BaySox. Cole Henry continued to “work on some stuff,” with two mistakes leaving the yard as the 24-y.o. labored through an inning and 2/3rds before he was lifted after 43 pitches. The win went to Lucas Knowles, who stranded one runner and let in one run on two hits and two walks over two and 2/3rds inning. Trey Lipscomb was the beer man in a 13-hit parade, led by Jackson Cluff with two singles and a three-run HR in the 2nd, followed by Frankie Tostadao with a single and two-run triple in the 1st.
Wilmington 3 Greensboro 2
• Alvarez (W, 3-2) 6IP, 3H, 0R, 1BB, 6K, PO @ 1B
• M. Perez (H, 7) 2IP, 3H, 0R, 0BB, 3K

• Lile 4-4, R, 3B, 2RBI, SB
• V. Peña 1-3, SF, RBI
Wilmington got three runs early and survived a late surge to squeak by Greensboro, 3-2. Andrew Alvarez notched his third quality start but this time he got the win, tossing six shutout innings with three hits and a one walk allowed while striking out six. Marlon Perez worked around doubles in the 7th and 8th to keep the shutout going. In the 9th, Holden Powell cordero’d around a one-out error, giving up two unearned runs on two hits and a walk before ending it with a strikeout with the tying run on third. Daylen Lile went 4-for-4 with a triple, two RBI, and a stolen base while Viandel Peña drove in the third run with a sac fly to lead the Blue Rocks offense.
Augusta 5 Fredericksburg 3
• Cornelio (L, 2-6) 3⅔ IP, 5H, 5R, 2ER, 3BB, 2K
• P. González ⅓ IP, 0H, 0R, 0BB, 1K, 1-0 IR-S
• Thomas 1-3, R, RBI, SB(30)
• Lawson 0-1, R, E(15)
The FredNats got lucky with two runs scoring on a pair of balks in the 3rd to take a 3-0 lead. Their luck ran out when the GreenJackets scored five in the 4th, including three on an infield hit followed by an errant throw by Cortland Lawson. The rains came to end the game after the bare minimum of 4½ innings. Riley Cornelio lost for the sixth time with all five runs allowed on five hits and three walks over three and 2/3rds innings. Johnathan Thomas beat out a suicide squeeze for an RBI single and stole his organization-leading 30th base to lead the Fredericksburg offense.
FCL Mets vs. FCL Nationals – PPD

I know it’s beating a dead horse, but the DSL Nats’ loss yesterday was especially bad; a complete team effort in futility. As is evident from the scoreline, the pitching stunk, allowing 17 runs. However, they hit NINE batters, with Moreno the starter hitting 5 by himself. Despite allowing 17 runs, they only allowed 11 hits (the HBPs obviously helping) but 6 of those hits were for extra bases. The defense stunk too, committing five errors. And the bats, to complete the garbage performance, were awful too, going 2 for 29 with 1 BB and 12 Ks. This team is comical. And the cherry on top of this disaster of a team is the singular good player on this team, Carlos Batista, appears to be injured, having not appeared in a week.
Batista signed for only $375000. Real bargain so far compared to many other international signings, including Yasul Antuna at 3.85 million and Armando Cruz (.232 BA in DSL, same overall BA in 625 AB, all below A+) at 3.9 million!!
Spare yourself and don’t look at what the guys who got the big bonuses in Batista’s signing class are doing so far.
How is Andrew Alvarez still in Wilmington? His ERA is now down to 2.75 on the season, and over the last 2 months, it’s 1.96. He’s 24 and repeating at the level, which he’s very clearly mastered. What more need he do?
Speaking of which, Marlon Perez has also been fantastic in A+. In relief, he now sports a 2.47 ERA and 54:17 K:BB in 43.2 IP, and only gotten better as the season has progressed, with a 1.86 ERA (and WHIP of 0.93) in July.
Yeah, Hill’s AAA OPS is now better than Rutherford’s. Hill has failed in multiple MLB stints. Someone was hoping the Nats would trade Lane Thomas so that Rutherford might MLB ABs. Don’t get that.
There is just such a difference between producing on the AAA level and the MLB level, seems like people don’t value players that actually prove that they can produce on the MLB level. It’s not easy.
Marlon Perez mimicking a Fonzi role for Will.
Interesting how both Adon and Lara toe the runner same night
Like we’re awaiting a miracle “ turning the corner “ from both .
Derek Hill is such a frustrating player. He’s been nothing short of fantastic in Rochester, but he completely blue his chance in DC. He even got a pretty solid run of games, starting 13 straight, but hit a mere .170 with only 1 XBH (a 2B) and one SB. Since his demotion, he’s been back on a tear hitting .571/.565/1.095, and a completely different player with 6 XBH and 3 SB (in only 5 games, mind you). How does a player so fundamentally change his playing profile from AAA to the majors? CF in DC is wide open, if he showed even a glimpse of what he’s doing in Rochester in DC he’d still have a starting job.
Still, I hope we DFA Dickerson, or just give him away, to free up space for Hill to get a second shot, or to actually give Alu a shot. Alu has been promoted like 4 times this season, but still hasn’t been able to start consecutive games yet.
Alvarez could be minor league pitcher of the 2023 chain
