• Blankenhorn 2-4, R, 2B, HR(GS), 5RBI
• Mejia 2-4, R, HR, 2RBI
• Rutherford 1-3, R, BB, 3B

Travis Blankehorn’s 6th-innings grand slam erased an early 3-0 deficit while Erick Mejia’s two-run shot in the 8th put the game away as Rochester stampeded Buffalo, 7-4. Anthony Banda moved up a day in the rotation and wobbled through five innings, somehow managing to let in just three runs from 10 hits and a walk. The cheap win would go to Tyler Danish instead as the journeyman reliever let in one of two runners in the 7th to get the blown save and was the pitcher of record when Blankenhorn smacked an RBI double to reclaim the lead at 5-4. Gerson Moreno walked two and hit two, but sandwiched a double play ball in between to keep the Bison off the board and get the save. Roster moves: RHP Luis Cessa assigned from Washington (MLFA, released by Albuquerque, 6/29); C Steven Williams reassigned from Wilmington.

Akron 6 Harrisburg 3
• M. Cuevas (L, 2-4) 4IP, 4H, 3R, 3ER, 3BB, 3K, HR
• Sinclair 1IP, 0H, 0R, 0BB, 1K
• Lipscomb 3-5, R, 2B(5), HR, RBI
• Arruda 1-2, R, 2BB, 2B, CS(5)

An early 1-0 lead went buh-bye with a three-run HR in the 2nd as the RubberDucks doubled up the Senators, 6-3. Cuevas gave up four hits total and walked three while striking out three over four innings. It was his fourth loss. Harrisburg had but one hit in 14 RISP chances, with J.T. Arruda and Jacob Young hitting back-to-back doubles in the 5th. Trey Lipscomb led the Sens hit column with a homer, double, and a single, followed by Frankie Tostado with a double and a single.

Brooklyn 7 Wilmington 4 (10 inn.)
• Alvarez 5IP, 6H, 3R, 3ER, 3BB, 6K, PO @ 1B
• Powell (L, 0-2) 1IP, 3H, 3R, 2ER, 1BB, 1K
• Sánchez 2-4, RBI
• Shumpert 1-3, R, HR, RBI

Viandel Peña’s pinch-hit, two-run double tied the game in the bottom of the 9th but Wilmington gave the lead right in the 10th for a 7-4 loss. Andrew Alvarez went the first five innings and gave up three runs on six hits and three walks while striking out six. The loss went to Holden Powell, who gave up back-to-back doubles and a walk to the first three batters he faced then fell victim to Jordy Barley’s 12th error, which allowed a third hit to plate a third run. José Sánchez led the regulars with two singles and an RBI while Nick Shumpert homered and Brady House added his 5th double.

Fredericksburg 8 Delmarva 4
• Atencio 5IP, 4H, 0R, 1BB, 7K
• Denaburg (BS, 2; W, 4-3) 2IP, 2H, 4R, 3ER, 3BB, 2K, HR, WP
• Hall 2IP, 1IP, 0H, 0R, 0BB, 4K
• Thomas 1-3, 2R, 2BB, HR, 3RBI, 2SB
• Lile 1-3, R, BB, 2B
• W. Perez 1-3, R, RBI

The FredNats blew a 4-0 lead but the Shorebirds gave it back in the late innings for a 8-4 decision in favor of Fredericksburg. Jose Atencio tossed five scoreless innings with four hits, one walk, and seven whiffs. Mason Denaburg gave up multiple runs for the 8th time in 19 appearances, giving up a grand slam for his second blown save, walking three and striking out two over two innings. Delmarva’s ‘pen and defenders were just as inept, with two hit batsmen, two errors, a balk, and a wild pitch led to the last four Fredericksburg runs. Bubba Hall took over for Denaburg and shut down the Shorebirds in the 8th and 9th innings with one hit, no walks, and four strikeouts. Johnathan Thomas led the Fredericksburg offense with two runs, two walks, two stolen bases, and three RBI while hitting his fourth HR.

FCL Nationals 12 FCL Mets 4
• Leon 4IP, 2H, 1R, 1ER, 1BB, 6K, HR
• M. Gomez (W, 1-0) ⅔ IP, 4H, 2R, 2ER, 0BB, 0K

• Ochoa Leyva 2-2, R, BB, 2B, RBI, SB
• Pettigrew 2-4, R, 2B, BB, 2K
• Cooper 2-5, R, 2K, 2E

Jose Colmenares drove in seven with a three-run HR and a grand slam as the FCL Nationals tripled up the FCL Mets, 12-4. Jefrem Leon went the first four innings, allowing a run on a home run and two hits total while walking one and striking out six. The win was credited to Miguel Gomez despite retiring just two of six batters faced and letting in two runners. Nathan Ochoa Leyva singled, walked, and doubled while Zion Pettigrew singled and doubled to lead the F-Nats’ 12-hit parade.

DSL Braves 10 Nationals 2

• C. Martina 2IP, 0H, 0R, 1BB, 1K
• A. Acevedo 1-2, 2R, 2BB, 4SB(11),
• Batista 1-4, RBI, CS

Let’s be honest: Trey Lipscomb was promoted mostly to clear playing time at A+ for Brady House, not because he was setting the league on fire (.251/.311/.387). But after 22 games at AA he’s slashing .301/.341/.506, putting up numbers of a legit prospect. Hitting coach Tim Doherty and/or Delino DeShields seem to have unlocked something in him.

It sure would be nice to get some value out of a 3rd rounder! Besides Jackson Reetz’s two ABs back in 2021, the last 3rd round pick to reach the majors for the Nats was 2008’s 3rd round pick, Danny Espinosa.

Do you guys remember Trevor Holder, Brett Mooneyham, Rick Hague, Rhett Wiseman and Nick Raquet? There’s many more busts in a long line of forgotten 3rd rounders.

Reid Schaller is also a long shot to break the Nats’ futility streak. I’ve already written off Holden Powell and Branden Boissiere, more recent 3rd rounders than Schaller.

That’s really depressing and a pretty stinging indictment of Rizzo & Co.

Jacob Young should also be recognized for his unexpectedly good showing in Harrisburg. Unlike Lipcomb, he was hitting well in Wilmington, batting .307/.383/.401, and after 17 games he’s batting almost a carbon copy of that .300/.408/.367. If only he could play good CF defense, he might be a real prospect.

yes, nice AB after he got down 1-2. TJ White got a bad read on it however then was out on a good relay from cutoff man. I guess with Lucius Fox on deck you have to take some chances.

The Nats are really scraping the bottom of the barrel with these MLFAs. Cessa, who had a 9.00 ERA in the majors in a strange experiment to convert him to a SP, after spending the previous five seasons as a reliever. He didn’t fare any better after his demotion, with a 8.44 ERA in AAA.

    1. FredMD says:
      July 7, 2023 at 8:11 am

makes you think they are about to unload a bunch of arms from the major league staff

      1. Will says:
        July 7, 2023 at 8:20 am

They’d deserve it. Abbott, Willingham and La Sorsa aren’t worthy of roster spots. The problem is, there isn’t anyone better to replace them. The cavalry is still stuck in Harrisburg. Gerson Moreno is the only player remotely deserving of a promotion.

        1. don says:
          July 7, 2023 at 10:10 am

Moreno “remotely deserving” is right, just based on his 42 IP with Rochester!!! 215 walks in 317 innings minor league innings is terrible. No real relief help in minors, at least not short term.

Fred MD we could possibly see 8-10 prospects imported from trades especially if JC and Thomas garner two players .
Maybe even for Finnegan and Harvey two players each ?

Atencia has now thrown 13 scoreless with 9H’s,15K’s and 2BB’s. nice little run

I have no idea what they’re doing with Denaburg. yesterday’s game sure invalidated the W/L stat for pitchers

Lipscomb and Young are more than holding their own in Harrisburg. Their numbers are so much better than Wood and Hassell, but I’m hoping those two will turn it around. I don’t think Hassell was in the lineup the last couple games

    1. FredMD says:
      July 7, 2023 at 9:07 am

Wood is only 20, Hassell almost 22. I have more hope for James but let’s not compare them to a 23 and soon to be 24 yr old.

    2. Will says:
      July 7, 2023 at 9:51 am

Two days ago, Wood’s OPS was 0.30 points higher than Young and .023 better than Lipscomb, and today it’s narrowly worse than both. We’re dealing with relatively small sample sizes and small margins that change each day, so it’s not fair to say either player is “much better” than Wood. Though it is true about Hassell, whose continuing slump becomes increasingly worrying.

      1. LongTimeFirstTime says:
        July 7, 2023 at 11:04 am

Let’s not spend too much time on batting averages especially when not factoring in for age. Besides youth and size, Wood has power and speed that no one else in Harrisburg has.

Maybe it’s time Delino gets Frizzell back so he can stack his lineup with Wood Hassel Tostado and Frizzz
