NOTE: Unless specified in Sunday’s game notes, which are not provided by Wilmington, probables are presumed to be last Wednesday’s starters or last Tuesday if he didn’t pitch on Sunday.
Rochester Red Wings, 32-35, 5th Place I.L. East, 12½ GB
Rochester finishes the first half with six at home against Omaha. The Red Wings still have a mathematical chance to finish above .500 but they’ll need to not lose more than once to the Storm Chasers and win four or more games before Sunday to do it. Omaha is currently riding an 11-game win streak.
Harrisburg Senators, 30-32, 4th Place E.L. Southwest, 3½ GB
The Senators had their chance to make a run at the first half title but only won twice against first-place Seawolves. They’ll need to go 4-2 against the 5th-place Flying Squirrels to finish at .500, which could be quite the achievement with Harrisburg’s current -20 run differential.
Wilmington Blue Rocks, 28-34, 5th Place Sally Lg. North, 8½ GB
Wilmington continues its 13-game homestand with seven against 6th-place Aberdeen. Barring a seven-game sweep of the Ironbirds, the Blue Rocks will finish below .500 and would need a lot to go their way to finish any higher than 4th place. Roster moves: While still listed as active by MiLB.com, Baseball America is reporting that 23-y.o. Alfonso Hernández has been released.
Fredericksburg Nationals, 29-32, 4th Place C.L. North, 7½ GB
Like the rest of the full-season affiliates, the FredNats need to win five or six of six to finish above .500. Their 12-game road trip continues this week with six against the Fireflies – the first meeting between the two clubs despite being in the same league since 2021.
FCL Marlins 5 FCL Nationals 4
• Agostini 5IP, 1H, 0R, 2BB, 4K
• Luis (BS, 1; L, 1-2) 2IP, 3H, 5R, 2ER, 3BB, 1K, HR
• Vaquero 2-2, R, BB, 2B, SB, CS
• McHenry 1-3, 2B, BB, RBI
The FCL Nationals bullpen imploded in the late innings and the F-Nats bats fell one run short in the 9th for a 5-4 loss to the FCL Marlins. Gabriel Agostini blanked the F-Marlins for five innings, allowing one hit and two walks while striking out four. Andy Luis was charged with all five runs (two earned) over two-plus innings for the (dreaded) blown-save-loss. Crithian Vaquero singled, doubled, walked, scored a run, and stole a base while John McHenry walked and doubled to lead the FCL Nationals offense.
DSL Arizona Red 1 DSL Nationals 0 – SUSP.
• Portorreal 1IP, 2H, 1R, 1ER, 0BB, 0K
Rain came before the D-Nats were able to go down in order in the bottom of the 1st but not before they dug themselves into a 1-0 hole in the top half of the innning. They’ll make this up when the two teams meet again on Thursday.
I guess the wing didn’t heal on Fonzi .
The amateur draft around the corner for more loogies and LH starters
Drew Dowd had nasty stuff for Stanford Cardinal following Quinn Matthews vs UT Vols
.
Five IP out of Gabriel Agostini on the Complex
An accomplishment on the complex .
Was wondering why Hernandez seemed vaguely familiar; turns out he last pitched in 2021. Must have been a pretty bad injury that he couldn’t even pitch again.
TCU horned frogs had a lanky RH who closed out Oral Roberts who seemed like a carbon copy of a veteran hurler since retired
And the lanky sidewinder lefty in pen has some giddy up
The Nationals second round pick is 40th overall. Coincidentally, MLB Pipeline says its 40th ranked draft prospect is 6-5 LHP Cameron Johnson. Also coincidentally, CJ is a local, having gone to Good Counsel HS before transferring to the IMG facto— er, “Academy” for his senior year.
I wouldn’t know him if he knocked on my door with a sign that said “I’m Cameron Johnson, the southpaw pitcher,” but I really like the idea of them drafting a big lefty after they get Skenes and if Johnson is the best one available, by all means, they should take him.
Nice dig long time
Chicks dig the long ball and a tall Johnson
Snarkle
Cam has an elbow issue. He is/was supposed to pitch in some All-Star game so scouts could get a look at him. Nats do not seem to take many prep pitchers, but they do know him from the Area Code games. There should be some top prep SS at 40. I would to see them go there. Not much at SS in the system.
Agree John on that fingering
Today in the Complex
Hum baby , Hall!
Baldy released @ AAA
Could Cate bump up off DL?
The next promotion in the system might require a psychic .
I’m going with Jackson Rutledge as next on the escalator, though it could be Jarlin Susana. I’d like to see Rutledge get a couple of AAA starts before he’s called up and I’d like to see Susana pitch more than 4 innings before bumping him to Wilmington, but I think those will all happen soon.
Any word on Tim Cate’s health?
next movements might not really be promotions but the end of rehabs. they’ll need to clear out some dead wood first.
but in the spirit of your post I’ll take the pickleman heading to Fburg for $100
Lefty Jorge Ramirez is truly in witness protection ( aka released : work release to Space Force in Cheyenne Mountain ).
Lol!
That must have been a brutal injury for Hernandez to not even attempt another professional pitch, having seen the shell of Denaburg regularly trot out after injuries completely derailed his career.
It’s also extremely sad. Hernandez was consistently excellent (career 2.91 ERA), and cracked my top 10 arms list back in 2021. I thought he was destined for big things having a good stint in Wilmington at age 21… and then he went to the Venezuela Winter League and apparently did irreparable damage to his arm. I hope this was just a premature move, and Hernandez manages to find another club. He’s still not yet 24, so he still has age on his side.
Great take Will on Fonzi
that same BA report lists Cody Greenhill as released. he had really good numbers in low A last year, albeit at 23.
Cody had some injuries tooo
Like many
