Rochester 6 Scranton/Wilkes-Barre 3 – GM. 1
• Peralta (W, 2-4) 5IP, 6H, 2R, 2ER, 1BB, 5K,
• Danish (SV, 5) 1IP, 0H, 0R, 1BB, 0K
• Noll 1-2, R, HR, RBI
• Blankenhorn 1-2, R, 2B, SF, RBI
• Kieboom 1-2, R, BB, RBI

Rochester put up three-spots in the 1st and 3rd as they doubled up Scranton/Wilkes-Barre/Lennon/McCartney, 6-3. Wily Peralta turned in five innings of two-run ball on six hits and a walk while striking out five to earn his second win. Tyler Danish put up a donut in the 7th to get his fifth save. Jake Noll, Travis Blankenhorn, and Carter Kieboom each went 1-for-2 with an RBI and a run scored to lead the Red Wings’ offense.

Rochester 8 Scranton/Wilkes-Barre 7 – GM. 2
• Espino 5IP, 2H, 2R, 2ER, 1BB, 3K, HR
• Ferrer (BS, 4; W, 3-3) 1IP, 3H, 3R, 3ER, 0BB, 0K, HR
• Kieboom 2-4, R, 2RBI
• Adams 2-4, R, 2B, RBI
• Alu 2-4, 2R, RBI, SB

In the “aftercap,” it was a battle of the bullpens (sort of). Though the Red Wings were worse, the RailRiders were bad when it mattered more as Rochester walked off with an 8-7 win to sweep the doubleheader. Paolo Espino went the first five and let in two runs on a two hits (one HR) and a walk while setting down three on strikes. Sean Doolittle’s return to AAA was marred with two runs coughed up in 6th, including one on a HR. No word on whether he held Jose Ferrer’s beer, as the 23-y.o. gave up the third Scranton/Wilkes-Barre longball and an RBI double to fall behind, 7-6. Jake Alu and Matt Adams both connected for their second hit of the game to put the tying and winning runs on with one out. After Jake Noll pinch-ran for Adams, Franmil Reyes ended the game with a two-run double. Roster moves: LHP Sean Doolittle reassigned from Harrisburg.

Harrisburg 4 Erie 2
• Rutledge 7IP, 4H, 2R, 2ER, 3BB, 6K, HR, WP

• Dunn 1-2, 2R, 2B, 2BB
• Wood 1-3, 2B, SF, 2RBI

The Senators rallied for two in the bottom of the 8th and held on in the 9th for a 4-2 win that stopped a three-game slide. Jackson Rutledge pitched seven full innings for the first time in ’23 and notched his fifth quality start. He was rewarde with a no-decision. Lucas Knowles got the “W” after cordero’ing through the top of 8th and leaving the bases loaded. James Wood hit a sac fly to break the 2-2 stalemate while Terone Harris drove in the insruance run with an RBI single. Joel Peguero worked around a leadoff single to earn his organization-leading ninth save.

Jersey Shore 8 Wilmington 5
• Luckham (L, 1-1) 4⅓ IP, 5H, 6R, 6ER, 2BB, 1K, 2WP

• White 2-4, 3B, RBI
• J. Young 1-3, 2R, 2BB
• House 1-4, BB, 2B, 3RBI

Jersey Shore tanned Wilmington for six in the 5th to turn a 4-1 deficit into a 7-4 and held on for an 8-5 win, dropping the Blue Rocks to .333 in the MiLB.tv era. Kyle Luckham allowed thise six runs on five hits and two walks over four and a 1/3rd innings for his first loss of the season. T.J. White tripled in the final Blue Rocks run in the 8th for his second hit of the game and fifth of the series. Jacob Young reached base three times on a safety and two base-on-balls while Brady House drove in three on a groundout, a double, and a bases-loaded walk. Roster moves: C Ivan Murzi reassigned from Rochester.

• W. Perez 1-4, E(5)
• Y. Rivero 1-3, BB

The Pelicans bounced Luke Young in the 1st and had the FredNats down 6-0 by the 3rd en route to a 7-3 victory. Young was lifted after 30 pitches in the space of five batters and gave up a solo HR and three hits total to take the loss. Jose Atencio’s struggles continued as he gave up multiple runs for the seventh time in 12 appearances. Fredericksburg took advantage of errors and a hit-by-pitch to score three times on just five singles and four walks.

Could we say last night might have been the most well rounded game in all departments even according to Skipper DeShields who still sticks in my memory in that classy Upper deck 19?!? Card with Grissom and 33LW.
I guess you need to hurl Henry in A plus in rehab to keep JRs flow going and wow he truly has come together .
    QS low walks .

Here seems to the norm lately
    Quality start from one guy
    Five IP from another
Lowry as a catcher mindset like
Buck Rodgers sure has a short leach
    With certain guys
    He’d make a good umpire ( right , Earl Weaver ?)

Bringing the Bennett discussion forward to today. I know that the Nats have shut down various arms to give them rest, but has it ever been done when that pitcher was pitching extremely well, like Bennett is? Secondly, Bennett, unlike Rutledge, Henry or Cavalli before him, has already been stretched out as a SP. Cavalli and Rutledge were both throwing in relief most of their college/JC careers, and Henry battled injuries. There was very good reason to carefully limit their wear and tear.

But Bennett was drafted coming off a 117 IP season for Oklahoma. The Nats rightly shut him down last season, but I’d have expected that that would have largely eliminated reason to very carefully manage his workload (like giving him 10+ day rests), even though they do appear to be, again rightly, limiting him to around 80 pitches per outing. Bennett has now thrown 47 IP, and we are very nearly at the half way mark of the season (60th game of 130 to play), meaning he’s on pace for right around 100 IP. Shouldn’t we be aiming to have him throw more than that? The days of 220+ IP SPs is gone, but 175 IP would be a reasonable workload expectation. So wouldn’t the ideal plan be to gradually try and ramp up his workload from 117 (last season) to get to 175 IP by the time he nears promotion (in like 2025)?

However, if Bennett is injured, then this is all rendered irrelevant, but it doesn’t appear that that’s the case.

The stat line on Rutledge is solid. Anyone who saw it have observations? He’s not the truly dominant guy we thought we were getting, but it seems that he’s learning how to be effective. Someone has done some really good work with him to get him heading in the right direction.

Speaking of the right direction, maybe T. J. White just needed the company of his draft buddy Brady? White seems to have found something this week after a brutal couple of weeks.

I watched the first and last innings of Rutledge’s start, still throwing hard in the end. not unlike his season to date if he can improve his command to where he doesn’t miss badly 4-5 times per inning he could be dominant. as it is his stuff is good enough to come right at the AA hitters.

what he has done is improve his ability to shake off those misses as well as base runners. last year he would get in spells where he overthrew when the trouble started, not so much this year. he needs to keep improving but so far so good in my mind

I was on the island again last night. Rutledge was solid the whole game. He gave up a solo HR to a guy who is on fire this season for Erie. He was impressive.

Hassell’s last 20 games have been painful, striking out a third of the time. granted he’s getting his walks and I’m all for showing good plate discipline but he seems to get himself in a lot of two strike counts by being overly selective.

    1. LM says:
      June 16, 2023 at 11:11 am

Wood is at .237 and Hassell. 239. Not what you want from the #1 and #2, but they are still young and will hopefully make improvements.

      1. Will says:
        June 16, 2023 at 1:32 pm

True, but Hassell’s line is based off 160 PA, and if you include his stint in Fburg his average drops even lower to .225. While Wood is batting that after 60 PA, and on the season is batting a healthy .278. And with all that said, Wood has hit for power, while Hassell has displayed absolutely none.

I was willing to overlook Hassells power outage due to the injuries, but hamate injuries do not tend to affect your plate discipline. Hope this is just a slump, and not a sign of wider troubles. Though FanGraphs’ very negative scouting report is a cautionary tale.

      2. KW says:
        June 16, 2023 at 1:39 pm

Wood has the same number of extra-base hits (8) in 15 AA games as Hassell has in 35. So Wood is hitting the ball hard when he makes contact. He just needs to make more contact. But he has to be one of the youngest players at the AA level at age 20, so all in all, I’m not really concerned about him.

Hassell is just 21 and also young for the level. One has to wonder if he’s pressing to live up to expectations, particularly where power is concerned.

I hope that Rutherford has been able to offer some guidance to these guys. He was also a highly touted high schooler who made it to AA around the same age as Hassell. And as with Hassell, there was a lot of chatter that he needed to pull more and hit with more power, particularly to make it as a corner OF.

Talknats on twitter says Bennett is starting Saturday.

Short version answers: Bennett is likely to much more innings in the 2nd half than the 1st. He may pitchnin the AFL. They may have a system that factors in things like instructional league or some type of sim game during the 10 day stretch.
