The two teams combined for 17 walks and 22 strikeouts, but Rochester got the hits when they mattered most (3-7 RISP vs. 0-5) to edge Syracuse, 4-3 for its fifth straight win. Cory “Don’t Call Me Roger” Abbott walked five and struck out six, but gave up just one run on a home run over five innings. He would get the no-decision when Hobie Harris was taken deep in the 6th. A walk and a single put runners on the corner with nobody out but Jordan Weems rolled a double play and walked one more to get the rulebook save. Travis Blankenhorn drove in two with a pair of RBI singles while Richie Martin homered, walked, stole a base, and scored to runs to lead the Red Wings offense.

The Senators homered twice in a three-run 6th to turn a 3-2 deficit into a 5-3 lead. James Wood would hit his first AA longball for an insurance run that proved to be the difference in a 6-5 win. Jackson Rutledge was just a bit better than his previous start, but good enough to win his organizational-leading fifth game with five innings of three-run ball on three hits, two walks, an one Victor Robles. He struck out six. Joe Peguero sandwiched a single between two whiffs to earn his eighth save. Frankie Tostado led the Harrisburg hit column with a single, double, and a homer, followed by Wood and Robert Hassell, who both went 2-for-5.

Wilmington broke a 1-1 deadlock with a three-run 7th and homered in the 8th to take their second straight, 5-1. Cole Henry kept the ball in the yard but gave up two doubles and a single over four innings. He walked one and struck out two. Andrew Alvarez picked up the win with four scoreless innings, allowing four hits and a walk while fanning one. Every Blue Rocks batter had hit, with Jacob Young leading the parade with three singles, followed by Trey Lipscomb with two doubles. Jared McKenize and Yoander Rivero both homered.

To win eight straight you need to be good, but it really helps to be lucky as the FredNats blew leads of 5-1 and 7-6 but still prevailed, 8-7 in 10 innings. Bryan Sanchez went a season-high five innings but gave up four runs on five hits (one HR). The win went to Jose Atencio, who gave up a homer to start the 9th to blow the save but then retired 9 of the next 10 batters. Atencio would get the win when Armando Cruz doubled in the free runner, who slipped and fell rounding third, in the bottom of the 10th. Every Fredericksburg batter had at least one hits, with Sammy Infante leading the attack with two doubles, a walk, and three stolen bases, followed by Brenner Cox with two singles and a stolen base.

  1. I was in Bowie last night. Rutledge should have only given up 0 or 1 run, but Harris and Wood didn’t catch two catchable deep flies. He hit 101 and was consistently at 96-97. Wood struck out his first 3 at bats, but then hit a no doubter HR and beat out an infield single.

  4. Strong starts by Rutledge and Henry are significant news for the organization. The Nats really need both of those guys to stay healthy and succeed.

    Nice mini-surges by McKenzie (11-game hitting streak) and Lipscomb (8 hits in last four games). Those guys seem to have some tools but are still trying to put everything together.

    1. 3rd Rounder Trey Lipscomb is adjusting well after the expected slow start at High A.

  5. In the better late than never category, Jake Bennett has been promoted to Wilmington.
