Norfolk busted out for four in both the 3rd and 4th innings as they went on to bury Rochester, 9-1. Jake Irvin didn’t make it out of the 3rd as he was chased with the first four-spot on three hits, including a three-run HR. The 26-y.o. walked three and struck out three over two and 2/3rds innings. Darren Baker singled twice and scored a run while stealing his third base to pace the six-hit assault. Jake Alu drove in the sole run and also drew a walk, one of three on the afternoon for the Red Wings. Roster moves: IF Chad Pinder activated from the 7-Day I.L.; RHP Tommy Romero placed on the 7-Day I.L., retroactive to April 19.

Malvin Peña, Carlos Romero, and Joel Peguero combined for four shutout innings. Orlando Ribalta cordero’d around two hits and an error in the 9th but couldn’t repeat the feat in the 10th, as the 25-y.o. Cuban retired just one batter while giving up two singles and a double to take the loss. Harrisburg was held to three hits – singles by Yasel Antuna and Leonel Valera and a double by José Sánchez.

Brooklyn solved Andry Lara in the 5th for five runs en route to a 7-1 win over Wilmington. Lara was charged with four runs (one earned) on three hits and a walk over five and a 1/3rd innings. He struck out four. Jordy Barley singled, doubled, and scored the lone Blue Rocks run while Jeremy De La Rosa singled twice to pace the Wilmington offense.
Fredericksburg 12 Delmarva 6
• Susana 4IP, 3H, 1R, 1ER, 3BB, 5K
• M. Gomez (W, 2-0) 1⅔ IP, 0H, 0R, 0BB, 3K, 3-2 IR-S
• Lawson 3-3, 2R, BB, 2B, 3B, RBI
• House 3-5, 3R, HR, 3RBI
• Quintana 3-5, 3RBI
The FredNats scored in seven of eight turns at bat to double up the ShoreBirds, 12-6. Jarlin Susana made it through four full innings for the first time this season, letting in a run on three hits and three walks while fanning five. Miguel Gomez got the win as the most effective reliever, though he let in two of three inherited runners while getting out of the 7th, in which Delmarva plated five runs. Brady House hit his third HR while going 3-for-5 with 3RBI, a mark matched by Roismar Quintana. Cortland Lawson reached base four times and fell a home run shy of the cycle to lead the FredNats’ 15-hit parade.
Brady House has been fantastic so far. Basically the polar opposite of the guy we saw last season. He’s walking 20% of the time, and gotten his strikeouts down a bit, and his power is back in a big way (.444 ISO). Given he spent all of his injury shortened ’22 in Fburg, I think he could get a quick promotion to Wilmington.
The problem with that is Trey Lipscomb is Wilmington’s 3B, even though he’s been struggling there. I’m curious to see how they handle this situation. I wonder if they’d entertain shifting House back to SS. Jordy Barley certainly isn’t blocking anyone at SS in Wilmington.
It’s also great to see Andry Lara settling in well in Wilmington. His ’22 was awful, but by the end of the season (3.89 ERA from August to September) was starting to find his groove, which is always a great thing to see from a young arm. It’s almost always the opposite. Fatigue leads to poorer performances as the season drags on. So it’s great to see he’s also handling the promotion too, especially being 3 years below average/age appropriateness.
I thought that House had the highest ceiling for hitters in the 2021 draft, particularly power-wise, and was excited when he fell to the Nats. Hope he can stay healthy and start to show it. I think the Nats are committed to the move of him to 3B, and no one is going to stand in the way of that plan, even a 3d-round pick (Lipscomb, who I do have some hope for, despite his rough start).
I think Infante will be promoted before House, since he’s repeating the level. I don’t really know what their positional plan will be for him, though. They seem to have moved him off SS, although that might just be because House and then Cruz have come along. I have been a bit of a Cruz skeptic, particularly of his bat, but he seems to be holding his own thus far at age 19.
I guess House technically is repeating the level as well, but he only really had one healthy month last season.
Wilmington needs to turn on the water system like Crash Davis did in Bull Durham
Those LOB and Ks totals are an eye sore slump
At least the Big Club got a boost from Pal Joey and Williams .
Way to go Dustin Saenz
6 IP in April good going
Regarding Susana, I wonder when they’ll start lifting the pitch/innings caps. Susana has never pitched in the 5th inning of a game in his short career. He threw 64 pitches last night, and I’m not sure he’s ever thrown more than 70. I’ll be keeping an eye on whether they start stretching these margins as the season wears on.
When you see so many unearned runs, it’s a reminder of the difficulty of getting an accurate read on minor-league pitchers. Sometimes the guys behind them might not be the smoothest fielders, and/or the fields themselves may not be the smoothest (although that quality does seem to have improved in general).
Just read that the A’s plan to keep their AAA franchise in Vegas once the MLB team moves there. Interesting that more “franchises” look to co-locate their major and minor league teams.
The DC suburbs/exurbs have the population and money to support a AAA team, but it seems that there are many machinations that would make it difficult to actually move a team into the area. It’s too bad that the Nats didn’t leap to claim the Richmond spot in the International League in 2009 after the Braves moved their AAA team to the ATL suburbs.
Is Eyeksson Rojas related to the Rojas / Alou family distantly ?
