Preseason Update: Mar. 30, 2023

March 30, 2023

With any luck, this will be the only one of these before the Red Wing shiv..er, open tomorrow afternoon.

●   A minor-league CBA will soon be in place, though it still needs to be ratified by both MLB and the MLBPA. Among the highlights of the deal:

  1. Dramatic increases in salary:
    1. $4,800 to $19,800 for the FCL/AZL
    2. $11,000 to $26,200 for Low-A
    3. $11,000 to $27,300 for High-A
    4. $13,800 to $30,250 for AA
    5. $17,500 to $35,800 for AAA
  2. Minor-league FA after six seasons for players signed at age 19+
  3. Reduction in the organizational limit for domestic players to 165 from 180, in-season (175/190 in the offseason) starting in 2024
  4. No contraction during the life of the CBA (2023-2027 seasons)
  5. Joint drug agreement and domestic violence policies
  6. Feedback mechanisms for future rule changes

As Baseball America put it, a player signed in 2019 has seen more change in the last four years than what’s happened in the previous 50.

●   The Red Wings’ Opening Day roster still has not been released, but even if/when it is, a lot can change between then and when the other affiliates start up next week.

●   While this is old news to us, MLB announced that the pitch clock shaved 26 minutes off the average spring-training game times from 2022. Bold prediction: Shock and awe in late April as the dearth of MLB catchers who can truly catch combined with new pickoff rules will lead to more steals.

I’m a bit puzzled and skeptical of these developments, and can’t help but wonder what MLB’s motive is here. Just 4 years ago, they were actively and successfully lobbying for legal exemptions for minimum wage to Congress, eliminating thousands of MILB jobs, and still crying poor. Why are they now seemingly willing to offer free accommodation and nearly triple the wages of players? MLB hasn’t suddenly become altruistic and moral, so what are they getting from this? Yes, they reduced another 15 player slots, but that doesn’t offset what they’ve agreed. Am I missing something?

I think more than anything else, they get four years without the fear of being dragged before congress for an amount of money that will not even show up on the balance sheet.

Question about the Cole Henry thoracic rehab
Would this require him to stay in warmer climate Florida rather than get sent north to cold PA NY or Deleware ?

Yesterday a judge approved a settlement of $185 million to minor league players, and that’s to just those who played in California. About 24,000 players in total.

I think Henry is going to be one of the feel good stories of “23. TOS is not like other injuries, it’s a nerve problem. He was confident that he would be throwing in spring training and he was. Keep your fingers crossed.

I don’t see it with Lee. Maybe he develops a better cutter or change but if not, well he’s not Bert Blyleven
