Team Yesterday Today Pitching Probables
Rochester Won, 5-1 vs. Lehigh Valley, 6:05 p.m. Verrett (7-9, 4.07) vs. Ch. Sanchez (2-2, 3.50)
Harrisburg Lost, 5-4 @ New Hampshire, 6:35 p.m. Cate (2-5, 6.71) vs Robberse (0-3, 4.82)
Fredericksburg Lost, 3-0 Lost CLDS, 2-1 SEASON OVER

Rochester 5 Lehigh Valley 1
• Gore 2⅔ IP, 4H, 0R, 2BB, 2K, 57-32 PIT-K
• T. Romero (W, 2-1) 5⅓ IP, 2H, 1R, 1ER, 2BB, 2K, HR, 3-0 IR-S
• Banks 2-4, R, 2B, RBI
• Alu 2-4, R, RBI
• Peters 2-4, RBI

The Red Wings broke open a 1-0 game with a four-run 3rd and cruised to a 5-1 win, running their win streak to five and winning their first series since June. MacKenzie Gore pitched into third, allowing four hits and two walks. Tommy Romero came on with the bases loaded and two down and bailed out Gore with groundout. He went five more innings, losing the shutout on a solo HR in the 6th but allowing just four baserunners and fanning two for his second win for Rochester. The trio of Nick Banks, Jake Alu, and DJ Peters each went 2-for-4 with an RBI single to lead the Red Wings offense.

New Hampshire 5 Harrisburg 4
• Irvin 6IP, 6H, 3R, 3ER, 0BB, 7K, HR
• Fuentes (L, 4-7) 1IP, 2H, 0R, 1BB, 1K
• Hassell 2-5, RBI, OF assists @ 2B, 3B
• Cluff 1-4, R, HR, RBI

New Hampshire put up a picket fence in the late innings to break a 3-3 tie and held on for a 5-4 win over Harrisburg. Jake Irvin closed out his 2022 with a quality start of three runs on six hits and no walks over six innings. He struck out seven. Steven Fuentes took the loss with a run on two hits and a walk in the 7th for his seventh loss. Robert Hassell, who will headline the Nationals contingent in the AFL next month, singled twice and threw out two runners while Jackson Cluff homered to pace the Sens’ attack.

Lynchburg 3 Fredericksburg 0
• Lara (L, 0-1) 4IP, 5H, 2R, 1ER, 1BB, 3K
• M. Perez 2IP, 0H, 0R, 0BB, 2K
• Boisserie 1-3

The FredNats had but one hit. It was just a single with no one base. He did not reach second base. That the Fredericksburg pitchers gave up three runs over eight innings was moot. After leading the second half wire-to-wire, outscoring their opponents by 118 runs, a three-game slump sent the team packing with a 3-0 loss to the Hillcats.

if you’re going to be a baseball fan you’ve got to accept that slumps happen. a team that hit at an OPS of almost .800 for a month has only a handful of hard hit balls over three games. too bad fellas, that’s baseball. other than one inning the hurlers did their job to keep it close.

Irvin’s year is a good story because he stayed healthy and was consistent throughout the year. of course they never let him throw 90 pitches and only a handful of times 80. still something to build on, now work on that change-up!

if not for the success Vargas has had with the Nats, Jake Alu might have earned some September time in the show

TBH, they deserved to lose — the swings they took yesterday were pretty bad, almost like they all forgot what got them there and were pressing. Obviously, this is to be expected at this level, but if it wasn’t obvious in the runup I had this feeling that this would happen because I’d seen it before — most notably in 2013: https://nationalsprospects.com/2013/09/last-night-in-woodbridge-140/

Thanks Luke for a trip in the way-back machine. 🙂

With the story today of Strasburg’s career seemingly over, one’s gotta wonder about Cole Henry’s future.

Dusty’s kid came up in the 7th and 9th last night with two outs. after falling behind 1-2 each time he battled back for a walk and line single to right. first time set up Hassell’s game tying RBI and second time kept the game alive. he’s another good story from this year.

he plays the game the right way and he’s earned the all star and AFL selections

I mentioned yesterday about the FredNats hitters choking; it’s hard to forget something like that. I still remember choking in high school, I could not breathe. Just hope it doesn’t hamper their development and they can learn from this.
