Friday’s News & Notes
Team | Yesterday | Today | Pitching Probables |
Rochester | Lost, 10-2 | @ Buffalo, 6:05 p.m. | Verrett (7-9, 3.91) vs. Zulueta (0-0, 0.00) |
Buffalo 10 Rochester 2
• Kilome (L, 2-8) 2⅓ IP, 2H, 2R, 2ER, 5BB, 1K
• Brill 1⅓ IP, 0H, 0R, 0BB, 2K, 2-0 IR-S
• Nogowski 1-2, R, 2B, BB, HBP
• Johnson 1-3, BB
After Rochester halved the lead from 4-0 to 4-2 in the top of the 6th, Buffalo responded with a six-run stampede for a 10-2 win. Franklyn Kilome started and was knocked out in the 3rd with two runs charged on two hits and five walks. Alex Troop finished the inning, letting in one of two inherited runners. Ronald Herrera’s first AAA appearance since 2019 did little to suggest he was ready as the 27-y.o. was lit up for five runs over two-plus innings. The Red Wings’ offense was limited to four hits and four walks and may have been shut out as both runs came on RBI groundouts after a HBP, a single, and an error put two runners in scoring position. The aforementioned single was the 10th straight game in which Jake Alu had a hit.

Jeff was asking yesterday how many of the 20 pitchers on the Rochester staff were actually ‘active’. Must be less than we thought if they threw Ronald Herrera out there so soon. Ugh.
So Alex Troops is back in the bullpen? I guess better late than never, but it seems there isn’t much of a vision of what the org hopes to get out of Troop. He’s been jerked back and forth from the bullpen to rotation in all 5 of his minor league seasons now. Frustratingly, it was apparent quite early on that his stuff just doesn’t play well as a starting pitcher. Just check out his ERA as a SP:
2017: 3.21
2018: 6.23
2019: 0.00 (interesting, unfortunately, immediately after his 3rd scoreless start he was promoted then didn’t start another game that season)
2021: 5.45
2022: 5.34
Especially compared to his ERA in relief:
2017: 2.55
2018: 0.00
2019: 2.18
2021: 1.59
2022: 2.84
After last season’s pretty extreme splits 5.45 vs 1.59 ERA, I thought it was pretty clear his future was a reliever, but nothing changed. He spent the first two months in relief, and was very good, but then got switched to the rotation, and things went south, just like they did last year.
He’s also R5 eligible, and some astute teams might see his potential in the bullpen, meaning the Nationals will need to protect him. I just hope that they’ll at least finally put to bed the idea of using him as a starter after this season.
you provide a good argument with the stats, and while ERA is not the most important stat for a reliever his other stats are also better in relief.
but what I think it comes down to is that Troop, like others in the same boat is not quite good enough in either role. starters are also more valuable than relievers. sometimes the change works, look at Knowles and in a smaller sample size Murphy, on the MLB level, Voth.
if he goes unprotected and gets claimed, there are others right behind him to take his place
Donning our Carnak hats gazing into the looking glass into 2023< we can guesstimate the Senators roster build will involve Hassell. Antumna, and a guy who should be involved in the org instrux camp-Ricardo Mendez. numerous guys truly just warming spots for the fondly favored blue chippers on FRED '22.
FRIZZELL should hopscotch to Harrisburg quick like a Harper or Soto.
thoughts??
starting Kilome and Verrett this week tells me that when signing these safety net/reclamation projects it helps if you can show them you will give them every opportunity to pitch. otherwise, why not give Herrera or Troop the start after you went through the motion of promoting them.
same thing true for the big club playing C Hernandez in the outfield down the stretch.
as brass ponders the next chess move with Corbin on the sidelines, Gray hitting
a slight pause in his season, one has to wonder if some of the Redwings guys gets some Big League java time: Verrett, Jefry-Rod,
Ponce DeLeon must be kicking himself in Toledo realizing if he only had showed better results in Rochester…
