Editor’s note: The matchups above are based on last Wednesday’s starters if the information was not available in Sunday’s press notes.
Rochester Red Wings, 53-64, 8th place, 13GB
Rochester split its series last week with Worcester and now heads west to Indianapolis for six, including a day game tomorrow. The Red Wings have not won a series since taking four of six against the Bison on May 30-June 5.
Roster moves: C Tres Barrera optioned from Washington.
Harrisburg Senators, 14-30, 6th place, 14½ GB (44-69 overall)
Senators won just one of five against the Curve to reduce their tragic number to 11. They’re still within striking distance of the Flying Squirrels for fifth place, which is where the Senators finished in the first half. This week, Erie comes to City Isle for the final series against Harrisburg.
Wilmington Blue Rocks, 23-25, 4th place, 4½ GB (58-55 overall)
The Blue Rocks split against the Blue Claws last week and will have a divided homestand again this week with the IronBirds, beginning with three on the road before returning home for three this weekend. The last three series of the season are against the very three teams ahead of them in the second-half standings.
Fredericksburg Nationals, 29-18, 1st place, 2½ GA (62-51 overall)
If Fredericksburg doesn’t collapse like the team below them on the organizational ladder, last week’s split against Lynchburg was a preview of the 2022 CLDS, which has been reduced to three games vs. five in years past. This week the third-place Wood Ducks come to town for their one and only visit this season.
FCL Nationals 15 FCL Mets 9
• Agostini 3⅓ IP, 2H, 3R, 2ER, 4BB, 5K
• Zinn (W, 1-0) 1IP, 0H, 0R, 1BB, 1K
• Klassen 1-3, 3R, 2B, 2BB, 2RBI
• Cox 2-5, BB, RBI, SB
• Suggs 1-3, R, HBP, 3RBI
The F-Nats sent 15 men to the plate in the 5th and eleven of them scored as the F-Nats sucked less than the F-Mets, 15-9 to stay mathematically alive (presumably; for all we know, the F-Mets hold the tiebreaker and this didn’t matter). Gabriel Agostini got the start and was dinged for three runs (two earned) on two hits and four walks while striking out five. The win went to Jaren Zinn for a scoreless top of the 5th. Blake Klassen reached base three times and scored three times with a double, two walks, and two RBI while Brenner Cox singled twice, walked once, drove in one, and stole a base. The F-Nats took advantage of nine walks, three hit batsmen, and four errors to score 15 times on eight hits.
DSL TEX Red 8 DSL Nationals 6
• Rivas (L, 0-6) 3⅓ IP, 8H, 7R, 5ER, 0BB, 1K, HR, HBP, WP
• R. Cuevas 2⅔ IP, 2H, 0R, 0BB, 2K, 1-0 IR-S
• D. Martinez 2-3, 3B, 2RBI
• Vaquero 1-3, R, 2BB, SB
• W. Diaz 2-5, 2B
The D-Nats never led this one as the D-TEX Red squad held a 3-0 lead after one, a 4-1 lead after two, and a 7-2 lead after four en route to an 8-6 win. Gustavo Rivas lost for the sixth time in 10 appearances as he was roughed up for seven runs on eight hits (one HR) over three and a 1/3rd innings. Dawry Martinez singled, tripled, and drove in two while Crithian Vaquero singled, walked twice, scored once, and stole his 17th base.
Checking in on Cristhian Vaquero: .254/.379/.720. Of all the Nats’ high-value prospects, he’s one of the the few with an acceptable K rate (17.8%) to go with an excellent BB rate (15.5%). He certainly has raw speed, with 17 SBs and 4 triples, although he’s been caught stealing 7 times. The missing pieces here are contact (lowly .254 BA despite helpful .316 BABIP) and power (only 1 homer and 4 doubles in 54 games).
All in all, not a terrible season, but also not much to get excited about (yet). If he were posting these numbers in the FCL, it would be more encouraging. He’s only four months younger than Brenner Cox.
Actually, FCL might be a more offensive league. See Armando Cruz, Gabriel Agostini, Jackson Chourio (full season), ect. I wonder if he might beat out Green for Fburg’s CF spot. Green is historically bad. Instructionals and ST will be huge.
We will take a poor man’s Bobby Bonds in five years from E – Green
Luke I am awaiting your snarkle in reaction to Blake “ Pickle” Klassen !!!
Fred MD playing Gimme 3 Steps by Skynyrd since I’m cuttin some rig but not with a gal named Linda Sue
But maybe Ricardo Mendez and V Peña think at the pitcher : gimme 3 steps ….
Rug at a place called the Jug … a jug of Strohs , Kevin ??
Wasn’t it Linda Lou? Sadly you got the water on the floor part right
Will mentioned woeful contact yesterday, and Elijah Green K’d three more times, giving him an, um, impressive 21 whiffs in 48 plate appearances (while leaving an astounding 11 guys stranded yesterday — just put the damn ball in play!).
Meanwhile Brenner Coz making contact
Last night I shared an Indpls memory as the Red Wings roll into Victory Field . A great facility .
Oh , Susana in Fred !
Cate and Rutledge both looking to continue recent good outings. Erie is second in the Eastern League in batting so it won’t be easy for him. JR was a little fortunate last time out against Down East, 5 shutout innings but not really dominant. go get ’em boys, get ahead and stay ahead!
Erie and Altoona carved up Sens all year for sure
With the rains past and Cuevas ( GOld ) on bump @ Aberdeen will I want to putt putt up 95 to see Claws shoot down Ironbirds?
Speaking of Victory Field , I have a Justin merneau that big Twins slugger for Rochester muscle a HR up and out of Victory and across the street . Victory sits below street level . Rather impressive clout
Maybe Frizzel will provide Fred moments like that ??
if you go make sure you take one of those big styrofoam index fingers so we can all see you. it’s one way to announce your presence with authority!
FredMD no can do the flooded basement beckons …
been there done that, I feel your pain.
Scratch late , Cate
Maybe Evan Lee pitches before Cuevas tonight ??
Well the Sens stink less than a basement
Drum roll , Hennie Youngmannn
How did Daniel Marte look in limited CF work on complex before injury ?
Reports of Elijah Green’s demise have been greatly overstated. Big day for him at the Complex: 1 HR, 1 2B, 1BB…… and noKs….
His OPS is .939. So, let’s dial it back on how “horrible” Green’s numbers are, while acknowledging he has to work on his contact rate.
Agreed Pilchard; he’s 18.
I’m NOT saying that Green is horrible. I’m saying that so much swing and miss at that level is very concerning. Yes, when he’s making contact, the ball seems to be going somewhere (unlike with Vaquero). But we were told that Green’s contact had improved this spring. That improvement isn’t translating to the pros so far, in a very small sample size.
Let’s not dial it back. 42% K rate in rookie ball is horrible. In the last 16 seasons of that league, there literally been zero players who have had a K rate even close to that bad (40PA min)and made any impact in MLB. He did great today, but to act like the K rate is not a big deal is ignorant.
no reason to get nasty.
his stats so far are not even small sample size, it’s microscopic sample size in terms of a career. whether or not anyone else has ever done it.
since 9 (or more) out of 10 prospects never make it you are more likely to be right. but no one here or anywhere in baseball knows. that’s all he’s saying, not that I should speak for anyone else.
It is not a small sample size for that league. Most of the players were in his general range for PAs.
Also, I never said he would not make it. Just that literally no one from the last 16 seasons with a K rate that bad ever has. My point was not that I thought he would not make it, but that to say “dial it back” and act like it is not a serious red flag is extremely ignorant.
Also, you have lived a very blessed life if you think that is being “nasty”. I hope you never experience someone actually being nasty.
my bad, you didn’t mean to say he was being ignorant. you meant to say he was being extremely ignorant
Jarlin Susana heading to F’burg for the stretch run and hopefully the playoffs.
if he comes after Rutledge tonight it will be heat followed by HEAT for the Down Easters!
This is insane.
Good Elijah:
6GP, 11 for 20, 4 2B, HR, 5 BB, 3 K.
Bad Elijah:
6 GP, 2 for 23, HR, 1 BB, 18 K.
