Rochester scored in four straight innings while every batter had at least one hit in an 11-2 smackdown of Lehigh Valley. Cory Abbott fell two out shy of qualifying for the win, allowing both runs on one hit and four walks while striking out three. A quintet of relievers combined to shut down the IronPigs the rest of the way, with Matt Cronin picking up the win. Ildemaro Vargas and Nick Banks doubled and homered as the Red Wings racked up 14 hits and drew two walks on the night. Roster moves: RHP Joan Adon recalled to Washington.

CAVALLI NAMED TO FUTURES GAME
For those of you excited to watch him pitch for an inning (or less) while the announcers either pretend to know who he is or prattle on about something else, Cade Cavalli has been named to the Futures Game on July 16. Darren Baker was also named to the N.L. Team.

Erie 7 Harrisburg 6
• Irvin 6IP, 4H, 4R, 3ER, 2BB, 5K, HBP, 2WP
• A. Lee (BS, 1; L, 2-2) 2IP, 2H, 3R, 3ER, 2BB, 2K, WP
• W. Garcia 2-4, 2R, HR, RBI
• Connell 2-4, R, 2-2B, 2RBI
• Dunn 2-4, R, BB, SB, CS

The Senators battled back from a 3-1 deficit to take a 6-3 lead but couldn’t hold it for a 7-6 loss to the SeaWolves. Jake Irvin pitched six full innings for the first time this season, giving up four runs (three earned) on four hits and two walks. He hit a batter and struck out five. Andrew Lee suffered the blown-save-loss with the last three Erie runs let in on two hits and two walks while striking out two. Harrisburg put on the tying and go-ahead runs in the 9th with one out before Jake Alu grounded into a game-ending double play.

Wilmington 8 Winston-Salem 1
• Parker (W, 4-1) 5⅔ IP, 2H, 1R, 1ER, 4BB, 12K
• Merrill 1⅓ IP, 0H, 0R, 1BB, 3K, HBP, 2-0 IR-S

• Méndez 2-5, R, 2B, HR, 2RBI
• Strohschein 2-5, R, 2B

Wilmington scored in six of its first seven turns at bat en route to an 8-1 win over Winston-Salem. Mitchell Parker tied his career high with 12 strikeouts, allowing the sole Dash run on two hits and four walks over five and 2/3rds innings. Israel Pineda reached base five times with a single, two walks, two homers, and three RBI while Ricardo Méndez doubled, homered, and drove in two to lead the Blue Rocks’ 13-hit parade.

Fredericksburg 3 Lynchburg 1
• Denaburg 4IP, 1H, 0R, 0BB, 6K
• M. Davis (W, 2-1) 3IP, 1H, 1R, 1ER, 2BB, 4K

• Boisserie 3-3, R
• Arias 1-3, 3B, RBI

The FredNats broke up the Star Trek Convention on the scoreboard with a picket fence in their last three “ups” to take this one, 3-1. Mason Denaburg tossed four scoreless with one hit allowed, no walks, and six whiffs. Marc Davis won his second game in relief while Todd Peterson struck out two in a 1-2-3 ninth for his second save. Branden Boisserie singled three times and scored ahead of Andry Arias’s triple while Steven Williams went Hartford in the 8th to plate the insurance run.

FCL Nationals 6 FCL Mets 3
• Bry. Sanchez 2IP, 1H, 1R, 0ER, 1BB, 3K

The win went to Miguel Atencio, who lost a 3-2 lead in the 7th but pitched a scoreless 8th and 9th for the blown-save-win. Angel Geraldo singled four times to lead the F-Nats hit column, followed by Armando Cruz with a single and a triple.

What a slash line for Mitchell Parker. 12 strikeouts and 4 walks make for a thrill ride of a game.

Good to see Mason Denaburg getting a chance to show something after all those injuries.

Israel Pineda with the big game (2 HR’s). This brings his OPS up to 768.

Riley Adams played his first game at 1B in Rochester last night. Will be interesting to see whether he gets more time there, setting him up to play some 1B with the Nats after Josh Bell is traded. Also the fact that he was catcher for Cavalli’s big game could also interest the big club.

Pineda is absolutely lighting it up! his last two years were a disappointment but he did hold his own in the AFL. last 20 games, 1.136 OPS

Parker being Parker, needs to keep refining his command, 104 pitches to get through his night’s work. WS did strike out 6 more times after he left.

another good outing for Denaburg in terms of his command and secondary pitches, third straight game with no walks. maybe they’ll loosen the reins a little and let him go past 60 pitches. he was still trowing hard at the end.

Irwin looks smooth and in control one minute but then gets off and gets hit. he also loses velocity in his later innings. still an ok effort with what he’s got. if he had Denaburg’s change-up…

watching Cronin is like watching Doolittle. use the force Matt and throw more strikes

Please pardon me while I laugh at a 23-year-old who is hitting .262 at A+ with only one homer being named to the Futures Game. I give Baker credit for making the most of his limited talent, but if his name was Darren Jones, he’d barely be getting any notice.

if J T Snow rushes in and yanks him out of the batters box we’ll have come full circle.

seriously, if this was done as a thank you for all Dusty did in DC I have no problem with it

I’m fine with the Nats spending a draft pick on him and was sincere in saying that he’s making the best of his opportunity. In fact, one could argue that he’s probably shown the best of all the 15-20 (or more) legacy picks/signings the Nats have made, with the possible exception of Jaren Long. But to have Baker among the top 50 prospects picked for the Futures Games, just so they can show the JT Snow clip, is a bit of a stretch.

Some of this is coming from the Nats, though. Baker is one of the players the front office promoting on their new Player Development feed. It’s Cavalli, Henry, House, . . . and Baker. That’s almost as weird as their insistence that Adon needs to be in the majors.

Jaron Long was an NDFA signed by the Yankees. Not as bad as say, Shane McCatty or David “¿Tú ahora quién es mi hermano?” Ramos. The Nats’ fascination with legacy picks is, quite frankly, an embarrassment.

            July 8, 2022 at 2:07 pm

Meh. With so many late draft picks most organizations do some legacy drafting. The O’s drafted Ryan Ripken in the 20th round before the Nats drafted him in the 15th round two years later. We’re just more aware of it when the Nats do it because we’re actually paying attention.

Agree with Fredmd; it’s the teams that pick who plays and the Nats picked Baker for the story.
