DSL Nationals OFF DAY OFF DAY

Scranton/Wilkes-Barre 10 Rochester 6
• Verrett (L, 3-5) 5⅓ IP, 7H, 6R, 5ER, 1BB, 6K, HR, HBP
• Meneses 3-4, R, HR(15), RBI
• Gushue 2-2, RBI
• A. Sanchez 2-4, R, 2B, 2RBI

Rochester finally fell out of first place with its eighth straight loss, 10-6, to Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. Logan Verrett took the brunt of the beating as he gave up six runs on seven hits (one HR) and a walk over five and a 1/3rd innings. A two-out error led to three unearned runs in the 6th, but it may have been a moot point as the RailRiders ‘pen held the Red Wings to a single run in the late innings. Joey Meneses hit his 15th HR and led the Rochester 12-hit parade with a 3-for-4 night, followed by Adrián Sanchez with a single, a double, and two RBI.
Roster moves: SS Alcides Escobar assigned from Washington for MLB Rehab.

Richmond 3 Harrisburg 1
• Troop 4⅔ IP, 4H, 1R, 1ER, 1BB, 4K
• Guasch (L, 3-8) 1IP, 1H, 1R, 1ER, 2BB, 1K, WP
• Dunn 2-5
• W. Garcia 1-3, 2B, 2BB

There’s no shortage of reasons why the Senators’ six-game winning streak ended with a 3-1 loss to the Flying Squirrels. Starter Alex Troop was not one of them as the 25-y.o. southpaw pitched into the 5th and allowed a solo HR and four hits total over four and 2/3rds. But eight walks issued in the last three innings will usually not work out well, as two of them came around to score. The loss went to Richard Guasch, his second in relief and eighth overall. Harrisburg was a woeful 0-for-13 with RISP and left on 13 baserunners. Jack Dunn led the seven-hit assault with two singles while Wilson Garcia collected the sole extra-base hit, a two-out double in the 1st.

Brooklyn 4 Wilmington 2 – GAME ONE
• Theophile (L, 0-1) 5IP, 4H, 3R, 3ER, 1BB, 5K, HR, WP
• Chu 2IP, 3H, 1R, 1ER, 0BB, 2K,
• Meregildo 1-1, R, HR(15), RBI
• Méndez 1-4, R, 2B

An Earl Weaver special erased an early 1-0 deficit as Brooklyn doubled up Wilmington, 4-2 in the first game, eliminating the Blue Rocks from the first-half race. Rodney Theophile gave up that three-run HR and four hits total over five innings for the loss. He walked one and struck out five. Wilmington was held to four hits, with Nick Banks driving in Ricardo Méndez with a sac fly in the 1st and Omar Meregildo pinch-hitting his 10th HR in the 7th.

Wilmington 9 Brooklyn 5 – GAME TWO
• Knowles 3IP, 4H, 4R, 4ER, 2BB, 3K
• Yankosky (W, 2-1) 2IP, 1H, 0R, 1BB, 2K
• Baker 3-5, 3R, 2B, RBI, 2SB(6)
• Antuna 2-4, 2R, 2B, 3RBI, 2SB(16), OF assist at 3B
• Strohschein 1-2, 3R, 2BB, 2SB

The Blue Rocks outslugged the Cyclones to take the nightcap, 9-5, and split the doubleheader. Spot starter Lucas Knowles was knocked for four runs on four hits and two walks over three innings. The win went to Tyler Yankosky for two goose eggs in the 5th and 6th with a hit and a walk allowed. Darren Baker singled twice, doubled once, and scored three times while Yasel Antuna drove in three while going 2-for-4 with a double. Baker, Antuna, and Kevin Strohsechein each swiped two bases.

Myrtle Beach 1 Fredericksburg 0
• A. Lara (L, 1-4) 6IP, 3H, 1R, 1ER, 1BB, 6K
• Davis 2IP, 0H, 0R, 0BB, 2K
• Arias 1-3
• De La Rosa 1-4, 2B

For the second straight night, the Carolina League’s top two offenses were held in check, with Fredericksburg on the short end of a 1-0 score. Andry Lara turned in his second losing quality start, allowing the Pelican tally on three hits and a walk while fanning six over six innings. Marc Davis added two perfect innings with two K’s to close it out. The FredNats mustered three hits and four walks and left on five baserunners. Despite the three-game slide, Fredericksburg is still just a game out of first place with seven games left in the first half.

FCL Nationals – OFF DAY
After an off day yesterday, it’s another game against the FCL Astros Blue today.

DSL Nationals – OFF DAY
The D-Nats were off yesterday and today, but remain in 1st place by a ½ game.

      Guy only has a 29 k/bb ratio now in 30 ip with a .967 WHIP. He’s slacking.

he is giving up fewer hits, fewer walks and getting more strikeouts than at any time in his career. it would be interesting to know what adjustments he has made.

Good to see that Nick Banks is rehabbing. There might be an opportunity for guys like him and Joey “Babe” Meneses to get a cup of coffee on Half Street once the big club backs up the truck at the trade deadline in a few weeks. (If you haven’t looked at Meneses’s stats, cue up “I’ve Been Everywhere” to play as you do.)

Alex Troop remains someone to watch, particularly with his conversion this month to starting. The starter ranks at AAA are pretty crowded, but he can make a nice case for himself at Harrisburg. Sure would be nice to develop a few multi-inning relievers for the MLB level.

Don’t know why I still care anymore, but has there been any news on resident idiot Seth Romero?

Hey, give the guy credit — it must take talent to manage to be out for four months with a strained calf. That pick didn’t make sense at the time they made it, and it’s been nothing but heartache ever sense.
