Third Basemen

Gilbert Lara   Gilbert Lara
Born: 10/30/97
Ht. 6’4″
Wt. 198
Bats: R
Throws: R
Career Stats
Lara remains on the watchlist at third base largely because of two things: his age (24) and the utter lack of viable alternatives. The pickup from the 2018 trade of Gio Gonzalez played three levels in 2021 but did not shine at any of them (.617 OPS combined). Mildly interesting: 56 of the 63 games he played for Harrisburg were at SS, committing 12 errors.
Omar Meregildo   Omar Meregildo
Born: 8/18/97
Ht. 6’1″
Wt. 185
Bats: R
Throws: R
Career Stats
Meregildo spent all but five games at High-A in 2021 with very similar results to 2019 (.771 OPS vs. .707) with one major exception – his HRs doubled from 8 to 16, which was third-best in the system. Like Lara, Meregildo is here due to incumbency and age. Unlike Lara, Meregildo played an alternate position on defense fairly well (.990 FA at 1B).
José Sánchez   José Sánchez
Born: 7/12/00
Ht. 6′
Wt. 197
Bats: R
Throws: R
Career Stats
Sánchez was tried at each and every IF position in 2021, apparently in an effort to find a place for his glove now that there are signs of life in his bat. He’s now taking walks (41BB in 73G) and showing more power (.348 SLG vs. .214 in ’19), which one would hope for given that he’s put on more than 40 lbs since he was signed for $950K in 2016.
