Thursday’s News & Notes

September 30, 2021
Team Yesterday Today Pitching Probables
Rochester Lost, 10-6 vs. Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, 6:05 p.m. Braymer (7-8, 5.89) vs. Schmidt (0-1, 2.75)
DSL Nationals Lost, 1-0 @ DSL Phillies Red, 10:30 a.m.

Scranton/Wilkes-Barre 10 Rochester 6
• Cavalli (L, 1-5) ⅔ IP, 2H, 4R, 4ER, 3BB, K, 36-16 PIT-K
• M. Sanchez 4⅓ IP, 5H, 4R, 4ER, 2BB, 4K, 2-1 IR-S
• A. Sanchez 2-4, R, 2B, RBI, SB(5)
• Casey 2-4, 2R, 2B, BB, SB(5)
• Read 2-4, R, BB

Cade Cavalli wrapped up his first pro season on a sour note as Scranton/Wilkes-Barre chased him after seven batters in a 10-6 win over Rochester. Cavalli walked three and gave up two hits while getting two outs—one by way of the K—as he lost his fifth AAA game. Mario Sanchez let in one of two inherited runners while getting out of the 1st and was dinged for four runs of his own on five hits over the next four innings to raise his season ERA at AAA to 6.48 but lower his career ERA at AAA to 9.82.

Adrián Sanchez, Donovan Casey, and Raudy Read each went 2-for-4 and combined for four runs, two doubles, two walks, and two stolen bases. The rest of the lineup went 2-for-20 with 10 strikeouts. The Red Wings were an abysmal 3-for-16 with RISP and left on 12 runners.

DSL Tigers 1 DSL Nationals 0
• Atencio (L, 5-4) 6IP, 2H, R, ER, 0BB, 7K, HR
• Abreu 1IP, 0H, 0R, 0BB, 0K
• J. Fernandez 1-2
• Colmenares 1-3

A solo HR in the 4th off the bat of Cristian Santana was the difference as the D-Tigers pitchers outdueled the D-Nats, 1-0. Jose Atencio pitched a career-high six innings, allowing both D-Tigers hits in his fourth loss. The 20-y.o. walked none and struck out seven. Jenier Fernandez broke up the no-hitter with a leadoff single in the 6th while Jose Colmenares did the same in the 7th. He was pinch-run for by Andy Luis, who ended the game by getting caught stealing at second base. The D-Rockies were idle, so the D-Nats remain mathematically alive, trailing by two games with three left to play.

BA NAMES HOUSE #2 FCL PROSPECT
Brady “He’s a Brick House” was No. 2 on the BA Top 10 for the FCL. Commence with the manufactured outrage at the sleight… or rejoice that the Nats have a Top 10 at this level for the first time since some guy named Juan Soto was down there. Not much new in the writeup in terms of scouting: still an advanced approach for someone his age, power potential, strong arm, and likely to slide over to 3B.

INSTRUX, AFL ROSTERS STILL M.I.A.
Instrux rosters are starting to trickle out, with BA setting up a page for all of MLB, but the Nationals are not among them. We cannot confirm rumors that the release is scheduled for the 31st of this month. Thus far, only the Cardinals have announced their AFL selections.

Cavalli’s been gassed for 2-3 starts now, what was the point of keep running him out there.

Totally agree. They’ve learned nothing about him from having him keep pitching, and all that has happened for him is to have his confidence damaged. Poor decisions by management.

Really baffling. They should have shut him down at least two weeks ago.

Easy to say in retrospect, but assuming he is healthy, Cavalli needs to pitch to get better. It’s not like Cavalli threw a ridiculous amount of innings (123 on the season). Also, the Nats pulled him after 36 pitches that’s fewer than a bullpen.
