DSL Nationals | OFF DAY | vs. DSL Mets1, 10:30 a.m. |
Buffalo 5 Rochester 1
• Reyes (L, 0-5) 5⅔ IP, 6H, 2R, 0ER, 2BB, 3K, HBP, WP
• Teel 1⅓ IP, 0H, 0R, BB, K, 2-0 IR-S
• Bautista 3-4
• Ford 1-3, BB
• 1-for-7 RISP; 11 LOB
Rochester nursed a 1-0 lead into the 6th where an error and a walk were turned into two runs. Buffalo added one more in the 8th and two more in the 9th to take the series finale, 5-1. Luis Reyes took the loss, his fifth for the Red Wings and 11th overall, despite a line of two unearned runs allowed on six hits and two walks over five and 2/3rds innings. Carson Teel stranded two while finishing the 6th and pitched a scoreless 7th in his AAA debut. Rafael Bautista singled three times to lead the Red Wings’ 10-hit parade.
New Hampshire 6 Harrisburg 4
• Carrillo (L, 0-5) 4IP, 5H, 6R, 4ER, 2BB, 6K, 2HR, HBP
• Troop 3⅔ IP, 1H, 0R, 0BB, 8K
• Sagdal 2-4, 2R, 2B, HR, 3RBI
• Wiseman 1-4, 2B
Like many a car in a New Hampshire front yard, the wheels came off in the 4th as the Fisher Cats scored five times to erase a 3-1 deficit as they took the season finale, 6-4. Gerardo Carrillo gave up all six New Hampshire runs on five hits (two homers) and two walks over four innings. He struck out six while losing his fifth game for the Senators. Alex Troop tied his season high in strikeouts with eight in three and 2/3rds scoreless innings, but the offense could only get one run back. Ian Sagdal doubled and homered and drove in three to lead the six-hit, one-walk offense for Harrisburg.
Wilmington vs. Bowling Green – CNCLD
The rains came just in time to cancel the season finale between Wilmington and Bowling Green. The Hot Rods will play for the inaugural High A East League title with the abbreviated, best-of-five format against the Grasshoppers. Pay no attention to the two teams being in the same division; it’s the convoluted playoff format conjured up by MiLB.
Fredericksburg 6 Lynchburg 2
• Theophile (W, 4-11) 5IP, 7H, 2R, 1ER, 1BB, 7K, HR, 2HBP
• Alvarez 2IP, 2H, 0R, 0BB, 4K
• Boisserie 2-3, 2R, 2B, HR(1), 4RBI
• Boone 1-3, 3B, 2RBI, SB
• Vega 1-3, 2R, BB
The F-Nats put up two to tie in the 2nd, three to win, and one more in the 5th as they finished out 2021 with a four-game win streak with a 6-2 victory over the Hillcats. Rodney Theophile picked up his fourth win with both Lynchburg runs allowed on seven hits (one HR) and one walk over five innings. Andrew Alvarez (2IP), Carlos Romero (1IP), and Amos Willingham (1IP) combined for four scoreless innings to close out the game. Jake Boone tripled two runs to tie it in the 2nd while Branden Boisserie drove in four with a three-run HR in the 3rd and a double in the 5th to power the Fredericksburg offense.
DSL Nationals (28-21, 3rd place DSL South, 4GB)
The D-Nats are riding a three-game win streak that’s brought them into 3rd place and within four games of the D-Rockies. This week, it’s games against the D- Mets1 today and tomorrow, off on Wednesday, the D-Cards Blue on Thursday and Friday, and the D-Tigers on Saturday.
I must admit that after a roaring start to this rebuild, it’s gone a bit flat after almost 2 months.
Gray, Ruiz, Casey, Adams, etc. all joined the team red-hot, and have completely fallen apart in September. Gray and Ruiz seem to have a lot more question marks than would normally be hoped for top 25 prospects.
Let’s hope it’s just fatigue setting in, but are any of our newly acquired players ending the season on a high?
I wonder if any of them will feature in the AFL. Perhaps, Aldo Ramirez could, but given his struggles in the FCL, maybe that’s too much too soon. Any idea when they will announce the AFL roster?
Ruiz did have two three-hit games last week, so let’s hope he’s figuring things out. And Lane Thomas looks like a gem in return for the carcass of Jon Lester.
Could The 2020 shutdown have ruined some young careers?
There were 3 players I was especially excited about this year in Fredericksburg and this is how they finished.
Leandro Emiliani – 21, 2019 GCL — .947 OPS 2021 Low A — .568 OPS
Viandel Pena – 20, 2019 GCL — .936 OPS 2021 Low A — .599 OPS
Jeremy De La Rosa is still only 19 but he was highly rated by just about everybody and his line this year was .595 OPS.
Now that the season is over I thought I’d throw this out there.
Count me in as extremely disappointed too, but they always warn you to take rookie ball stats with a mountain of salt. Yet another reminder of that.
Fortunately they’re all still extremely young, de la Rosa especially. Fun fact: Branden Boissiere is exactly one day younger than Leandro Emiliani, and has a OPS .007 better than Emiliani on the same team. It’s far too soon to write off Boissiere, so too for Emiliani. Still, Emiliani was looking like a real prospect at this time two years ago, and now he’s looking pretty uninteresting.
Mark L I have thought the same thing all summer even going back to some guts like Augustin
Alex Troop finished his year strong. After a good year in Wilmington he made 4 appearences in Harrisburg and put up gooseggs all 4 times.
A good example of a starter that wasn’t quite good enough, but still has something to offer in relief.
Troop as a SP this season: 5.45 ERA, 1.58 WHIP, 38 IP, 52 H, 50 K, 8 BB,
In relief: 1.59 ERA, 0.75 WHIP, 45 IP, 27 H, 50 K, 7 BB
As well as:
Andrew Lee as SP: 7.99 ERA
Andrew Lee as RP: 2.91 ERA
Carson Teel as SP: 5.86 ERA
Carson Teel as RP: 1.72 ERA
I’m glad the FO seems to have finally internalized this. It’s been a decade of them stunting potentially really good bullpen pieces by being unreasonably stubborn with their development as starters despite all evidence to the contrary (see AJ Cole, Austin Voth, and maybe even Ben Braymer and Joan Adon.).
Sorry Will, didn’t see your comment re relief until after posting about Troop. This is so right, and so confounding. The big club desperately needs relievers, and ends up having to sign and/or trade for so many every year. They do very little to develop relievers. In fact, they try to flip a number of college relievers into starters. Andrew Lee is one of those, had nearly all of his college success as a closer after failing as a starter. Todd Pederson is another more recent example.
I wonder whether Troop is an AFL candidate, particularly since he’s Rule 5 eligible. The big club certainly could use some LH relief help (ANY relief help, to be honest), so it’s not a stretch to think he might have a chance to make it to DC in 2022. It’s interesting that they have gone on and made the call to move Troop to relief but have been so resistant against doing that even with several guys who have had much worse stats than him.
I am sad that the season is almost over. Do we root for the Dodgers to see Max and Trea het another one?
