Scranton/Wilkes-Barre 5 Rochester 1
• Reyes (L, 0-4) 5IP, 6H, 5R, 5ER, BB, 4K, HR
• Rainey 1IP, 0H, 0R, BB, 0K
• Robles 1-3, R, HR, RBI
• Banks 1-3
Victor Robles led off the game with a solo HR and Nick Banks followed with a single. It was all downhill from there as the RailRiders railroaded the Red Wings, 5-1. Luis Reyes lost for the fourth time in six AAA starts, giving up all five Scranton/Wilkes-Barre runs on six hits (one HR) and one walk. He struck out four. Tanner Rainey issued a walk while getting all three outs in the 6th. Donovan Casey walked with one out in the 2nd and Jake Noll led off the 7th with a walk to round out the Rochester “offense” for the first game.
Scranton/Wilkes-Barre 11 Rochester 3
• Sharp (L, 4-4) 3IP, 5H, 7R, 6ER, 2BB, 1K, 3HR
• Bonnell 2⅓ IP, 1H, 0R, 2BB, 1K, 1-0 IR-S
• Noll 3-4, R
• Read 1-3, R, HR, 3RBI
The RailRiders scored in each of their first four “ups” to cruise an 11-3 win and hand the Red Wings their ninth straight loss. Sterling Sharp gave up five runs on three homers and seven runs/five hits total over three innings to drop his fourth game. Rochester went 1-for-7 with RISP but that “1” was an Earl Weaver special by Raudy Read. Jake Noll singled three times to lead the seven-hit, one-walk attack.
Bowie 5 Harrisburg 3
• Fuentes (L, 0-1) 5⅓ IP, 6H, 5R, 5ER, 2BB, 4K, 4HR
• Navas 2IP, 0H, 0R, 0BB, 4K
• Wiseman 1-4, 2B, 2RBI
• Corredor 1-4, R, 2B, RBI
Like Sharp, Fuentes’s sinker wasn’t sinking as Bowie got to the 24-y.o. Panamanian for four solo HRs in a 5-3 win over Harrisburg. Fuentes pitched into the sixth and gave up six hits total while walking two and fanning four. Reid Schaller and Carlos Navas combined for three and 2/3rds scoreless inning of relief but were matched by the BaySox bullpen, which blanked the Senators over the last three innings. Harrisburg got all its runs and hits in the 4th inning as back-to-back singles by Jordy Mercer and Cole Freeman were followed by back-to-back doubles by Aldrem Corredor (1RBI) and Rhett Wiseman (2RBI).
Wilmington 6 IronBirds 5
• Guasch 4IP, 2H, 2R, 2ER, 3BB, 7K, HBP, 2WP
• Moore (W, 2-2) 2IP, 2H, 0R, BB, 5K
• Millas 3-4, R, RBI, SB(5)
• Dunn 2-4, R, 3B, BB
• Pineda 1-4, R, HR, 2RBI
The Blue Rocks fell behind 5-1 after 6½ innings, but rallied for two in 7th, two in the 8th, and walked off in the 9th for a 6-5 win over the IronBirds. Richard Gausch got the start and went four innings, letting two on two hits, three walks, and a Victor Robles. He struck out seven but threw two wild pitches. The win went to Davis Moore, with two scoreless innings and five whiffs. Drew Millas’s third single of the night came ahead of Israel Pineda’s 13th HR of the year (in 72G) to tie it at 5-5. A Jeremy Ydens single, a sacrifice by Ricardo Méndez), and another single by Yasel Antuna delivered the win to Wilmington.
Delmarva 6 Fredericksburg 2
• A. Lara (L, 0-1) 4⅔ IP, 3H, 4R, 4ER, 5BB, 3K, HR, 2WP
• Alvarez 1IP, 1H, 0R, BB, 1K
• Young 1-4, 2B, 2RBI, BB
• Randa 1-3, R, BB
While it’s tempting to blame the loss on the beer that Fredericksburg may be holding for Rochester (as the Red Wings make a run to match the F-Nats’ 15-game winless streak), the truth is that the Andry Lara was a bit too wild (2WP, 5BB) in his Low-A debut as Delmarva tripled up Fredericksburg, 6-2. Lara gave up four runs on two bases-loaded wild pitches and a two-run HR in the 5th over four and 2/3rds innings. Fredericksburg was limited to four hits but drew five walks. Jacob Young drove in two of those free passes in the 5th with a two-run double.
FCL Nationals 7 FCL Marlins 6
• A. Ramirez 1⅔ IP, 6H, 6R, 6ER, 2BB, 1K, HBP
• P. González 3⅓ IP, 0H, 0R, BB, 4K, HBP, 1-0 IR-S
• Marquez (W, 3-0) 2IP, 4H, 0R, 0BB, 2K, HBP
• Ribalta (SV, 2) 2IP, 0H, 0R, 0BB, 3K
• Coutts 3-4, R, 2B, RBI
• White 2-5, R, 2B, 2RBI
• House 2-5, R, RBI
The FCL Nats fell behind 6-0 after two innings but got three in the 4th and four in the 7th for a 7-6 comeback win over the FCL Marlins. Aldo Ramirez gave up all six runs on six hits and two walks over an inning and 2/3rds. Pedro González, Franklin Marquez, and Orland Ribalta combined for six and a 1/3rd scoreless innings of relief, with Marquez picking up his third win and Ribalta getting his second save. Jackson Coutts pushed his BA to .431 with two singles and a double while the Nats’ two schoolboys – Brady “He’s a Brick” House and T.J. White – both went 2-for-5 to power the FCL Nats offense.
DSL Yankees1 4 DSL Nationals 3
• Zapata 3⅓ IP, 3H, 2R, 2ER, 0BB, 2K, 2HBP
• R. Lara (L, 3-2) 3⅔ IP, 2H, 2R, 0ER, 2BB, 5K, 2HBP, WP, 1-1 IR-S
• E. Ramirez 2-3, R, 2B, 2RBI
• Batista 1-2, R, 2B, BB
SSS, but tremendous starts to the pro careers by House and White. Both are unusually young even for high school draftees, as House just turned 18 in June and White did in July. Both are also already substantially well built (6-4, 215 and 6-2, 210). Let’s hope they continue to develop, and that Lile and Infante in particular start hitting a little better to catch up with them.
On the age flipside is 23-year-old Jackson Coutts, who really struggled at Fburg but is tearing it up at the complex. He’s already going to be sort of blocked at 1B in A ball next year by Frizzell, though. But tearing it up is always useful, no matter the level.
KW took the words out of my mouth on the ‘Two Tornados’ in Florida.
Must see TV tonight with Cavalli & Tetreault toeing the slabs.
One never has enough depth in lefty swinging bats in the middle if the lineup . Frizzel and Coutts should be fun to track up the ladder.
With the extended minor league schedule I would guess no “ complex “ instructional camp post season ?
I was surprised that the AFL was coming back, so it’s possible. Unfortunately, I did hear from Lee recently. He won’t be taking pics for us this year. 🙁
Bad news about Lee, he did such a great job taking photos of our prospects. Will miss him.
I watched Lara’s start and while he has some things to learn (at one point, he uncorked two run-scoring wild pitches in one at-bat), he has good stuff. Fastball has life, good curveball, nasty slider. Seems coachable; at one point, he threw six straight balls, got a little pep talk from his catcher and third baseman, and then started pumping strikes again. I’m looking forward to seeing more.
São I always think back to a young Pedro Martinez on the Expos who was once called a head hunter by Marty Brennaman on a Reds broadcast before he harnessed his God blessed stuff.
Joan Adon, Richard Guasch , G Carillo , Lara ,
At least they don’t hit the opposing teams mascots
Like Nuke …
Draft and follow
Cole Wilcox 37 th rounder for Nats once going under the TJ knife …
I don’t know about those wild pitches. Yes, he was wild but I felt like a competent catcher should’ve handled them both. Unfortunately, the Nats prefer bat-first players at that position, which is why I might have grandchildren before I see another Sandy Leon.
Good point Luke about bat- first
Catchers ..
House 1-for-3 with a 2R HR and a BB. Batting 370. Also had his 2nd and 3rd errors.
