Rochester 6 Lehigh Valley 2 – GM. 1
• Rogers (W, 6-6) 5IP, 6H, 2R, 2ER, BB, 5K, HR
• McGowin (H, 3) 1IP, 0H, 0R, 0BB, 0K
• Ruiz 4-4, R, 3-2B, 2RBI
• Castillo 3-3, 2R
• Flores 1-2, 2R, 2B, BB, 2RBI
Rochester erased a 2-0 deficit with six unanswered runs to take the opener, 6-2. Josh Rogers tossed five innings of two-run ball on six hits (one HR) and a walk while striking out five for his sixth win as a Red Wing. Kyle McGowin set the side down in order in the 6th for his third hold while Ronald Peña worked around two hits in the 7th to close it out. Keibert Ruiz singled once doubled three times while Ali Castillo singled three times to lead Rochester’s 11-hit parade.
Lehigh Valley 4 Rochester 3 (8 inn.) – GM. 2
• Sharp 3⅔ IP, 2H, 2R, 2ER, BB, 4K, HR, WP
• Moreno (BS, 1) ⅓ IP, 0H, 0R, BB, K, 3-1 IR-S
• Barrett (L, 2-1) 2IP, 1H, 1R, 0ER, 0BB, 2K
• Snyder 2-3, R, HR, 2RBI
• Casey 2-4, R, SB
In the nightcap, the IronPigs erased deficits of 2-0 and 3-1 to force an extra inning, where they plated the free runner without a hit for a 4-3 win. Sterling Sharp failed to get to the 5th for the third straight start, allowing two runs on two hits (one HR) and a walk over three and 2/3rds innings. He struck out four. Aaron Barrett was charged with the loss after a grounder to the right side moved the runner to third and a sac fly drove him in. Brandon Snyder singled and homered while Donovan Casey singled twice and stole a base to account for four of the ten Red Wings hits, of which just two came in 13 RISP chances.
Akron 11 Harrisburg 4
• Cate (L, 2-8) 2⅔ IP, 4H, 2R, 2ER, BB, 0K, HR, PO @ 1B
• Alu 2-4, R, HR(5)
• Rhinesmith 1-3
The Senators’ modest four-game win streak ended with an 11-2 quackdown by the RubberDucks. Tim Cate lost for the fifth straight start and failed to go five innings for the seventh time. He was bitten for two runs on four hits (one HR) and a walk over two and 2/3rds innings. He did not strike out a batter for the second consecutive outing. All of this was moot as the Harrisburg offense was held to two singles, one apiece by Jake Alu and Jacob Rhinesmith, and Alu’s 5th HR at AA (tenth overall).
Wilmington 8 Abderdeen 7
• Shuman 4⅔ IP, 4H, 2R, 2ER, BB, 6K, HR
• Troop (W, 8-4) 2⅓ IP, 3H, 2R, 2ER, 2BB, 3K, 2-0 IR-S
• Peterson (SV, 2) ⅔ IP, H, R, ER, BB, K, 2-1 IR-S
• Antuna 2-4, 2R, 2B, BB, HR(10), 5RBI
• Connell 3-4, R, 2B
• Upshaw 2-5, R, 2RBI
If the Wilmington ballplayers are walking kind of funny, it’s because they keep getting lucky. Also, they’ve won eight in a row, including last night’s 8-7 contest where they gave up three runs in the bottom of the 9th. Seth Shuman fell one out short of getting the win as he gave up two runs on four hits (one HR) and a walk while striking out six. Alex Troop stranded two while getting out of the 5th but gave up two runs in the 7th, which was still good enough for his eighth win. Likewise, Francys Peguero hit a batter and walked two, then sent them home on a double. Todd Peterson gave up a sac fly for the final Aberdeen run and ended the comeback bid with a lineout to second. Yasel Antuna drove in five with and scored twice while hitting his 10th HR while Justin Connell singled twice and doubled once to lead the Blue Rocks offense.
Delmarva 11 Fredericksburg 9
• Chu 3⅔ IP, 3H, 5R, 3ER, 4BB, 1K, HBP
• Yankosky 2IP, 2H, 0R, 0BB, 1K
• Alastre (BS, 2; L, 2-2) 1IP, 3H, 3R, 3ER, 1BB, 1K
• V. Peña 2-4, R, 2-2B, BB
• Martina 2-4, 3R, 2B, BB, 2RBI
• Vega 2-4, 2RBI
Fredericksburg rallied from an 8-2 deficit and actually led 9-8 before Delmarva recovered and won it in the 8th, 11-9. Gilberto Chu got knocked from the box in the 4th with five runs (three earned) on three hits, four walks, and a Victor Robles. He struck out one. Carlos Romero dug the hole three runs deeper before Tyler Yankosky settled things down with two scoreless. The F-Nats sent nine men to the plate in the 7th and six of them came around to score. Jeremy De La Rosa’s two-out RBI single gave Fredericksburg the lead, but Tomás Alastre ended his streak of six straight outings without giving up a run with three let in on three hits and a walk for his second blown save and second loss. Viandel Peña, Junior Martina, and Onix Vega combined for six hits, including three doubles, three runs, two walks, and four RBI. Roster moves: 2B Viandel Peña activated from 7-Day I.L.
FCL Cardinals 11 FCL Nationals 3 – GM. 1
• Henry (L, 0-1) 1IP, 2H, 5R, 3ER, BB, HBP, 4K
• Baker 1-3, BB
• Coutts 0-1, R, 3BB
The FCL Cards jumped on the FCL Nats and Cole Henry for five runs in the first and cruised to an 11-3 win. Henry struck out four, walked one, hit a batter, and gave up two hits. A passed ball and an error on a dropped third strike rendered two of the five runs unearned. The Nats scored twice on groundouts as they racked up eight hits, with just two batters reaching base multiple times – Darren Baker (1B, BB) and Jackson Coutts (3BB).
FCL Cardinals 4 FCL Nationals 3
• Saenz 2IP, 2H, R, ER, 0BB, 4K
• Ribalta (BS, 1) ⅔ IP, 2H, 2R, 2ER, BB, 0K, HBP
• M. Gomez (L, 1-2) 2⅓ IP, 2H, R, ER, BB, 3K, HR, 2-0 IR-S
• Rivero 2-3, BB, RBI
• Arias 1-4, R, HR, RBI
In the second game, the FCL Nats posted a picket fence in the middle innings, but the FCL Cards were one better, 4-3. Fourth Rd. pick Dustin Saenz got the start and gave up a run on two hits over two innings. He walked none and fanned four. Orlando Ribalta let in the tying run for his first blown save of 2021 while Miguel Gomez gave up a solo HR in his third inning of work to lose for the second time. Yoander Rivero went 2-for-3 with a walk and an RBI while Andry Arias homered in four trips to the plate. The rest of the lineup went 1-for-16. Roster moves: RHP Cole Henry assigned from Wilmington for MiLB rehab; RHP Dustin Saenz (4th Rd. pick) assigned from Washington; RHPs Manuel De La Rosa, Jhonatan German released.
DSL Rockies 9 DSL Nationals 1
• Moron (L, 0-2) 4IP, 8H, 5R, 5ER, 0BB, 4K, HBP, WP
• Marcano 1IP. 0H, 0R, 0BB, 1K
• Contreras 2-4, 2B
• E. Ramirez 1-2, BB
Wow, that’s an unexpected return from Cole Henry. That must’ve been a HUGE retroactive move, as it was only a few weeks ago that he was transferred to the 60 day IL. Even though it was a rusty return, it’s good to see him back so soon.
Also, it’s pretty hilarious that he struck out 4 batters in exactly one inning pitched. I hope he doesn’t throw another inning in the FCL so he can maintain what I suspect has to be a record strike out rate at any level of baseball of all time: 4 K/IP or 36 K/9!!
Boston Terrier dawn patrol @ 4:15 am
After a mini slump to start August, Jake Alu is back in the swing of things (pun intended). The first 9 games in August he batted .100/.129/.167, but has put that behind him in a major way. Over his past 5, he’s batting .500/.571/.833, for a highly impressive combined line of .300/.352/.488.
Some other players to note:
Armond Upshaw, after four mostly disappointing seasons is finally displaying some of that multi-tools profile he was expected to have. He’s been red-hot recently, hitting .455/.526/.758 with 4 SB over his past 8 games, in total having a good season (.254/.341/.429). He is, though, 25 and still in Wilmington, so caveats abound.
Ricardo Mendez hasn’t missed a beat since his promotion to Wilmington. He’s quietly had a very impressive season, batting .291/.351/.426 (highly similar to Upshaw’s line). But unlike Upshaw, he’s still firmly on schedule, at only 21 years old. What’s most impressive is his power has finally developed. This season he’s hit as many HRs (3) as he did in his previous three seasons COMBINED, and hit MORE 2Bs (17) than he has in his previous three seasons combined (15)! Hope he can keep it up!
J German hit a wall ..
Billy Moore s son blew it
Friday night follies
The two players released were not let go because of their numbers. Jhonatan German signed 6 years ago and his ERA this year at Harrisburg was 3.75.
I’m less familiar with De la Rosa but his ERA this year was 3.38.
You have to think they were released because they are hurt.
German had major control issues this year, walking 10 in 12 IP in Harrisburg. Still, he seems like a serviceable reliever, who never overwhelmed batters, but consistently put up solid numbers. I suspect he’ll get picked up by another team, or maybe find some success in the Mexican League. Best of luck to him!
Antuna has been terrible in the field, but terrific at the plate. Isn’t it time to move him up to Harrisburg? One would think that his defense could be improved greatly by coaching, maybe during winter ball. In the meantime, the Nats need to see him batting against better pitchers.
Big fly from Big Tuna with that full blue moon
Hanging over head meant for Sunday
Lee looked good 5 IP 7 Ks
Hmmm Barley 7 th E @ Fred
Rochester having fun with Casey leading off
Speaking of serviceable relievers. Are Aaron Barrett and Dakota Bacus the same person? They’ve been consistently very good in the upper minor levels, but have been completely overwhelmed by major league hitters in their limited appearances for the Nats. (Bacus gave up 9 HR (!!) in 11 IP last season. Barrett’s ERA is 13.50 from 19-20 on the Nats)
It’s rare you see pitchers so dominant against AAA hitters (Barrett sports a 0.41 ERA in AAA!!), and fail so miserably in the majors. Hope both of them get a chance soon, since it doesn’t matter anymore if they’re lousy to start. They should have a long leash to get over the nerves or whatever it is that’s been plaguing them.
German was an NRI to spring training just a couple of years ago, so they thought highly of him not that long ago. I guess they’re clearing a path for someone else to move up.
There was some discussion of Upshaw yesterday. Yes, it’s great that he’s finally hitting stride at 25. He’s still got a K% over 28, though, and he’s got to improve that contact if he’s truly going to “make it.” Good for him for sticking with it, and they must see something in him, as he had a couple of years bad enough to get some others released.
I’m wondering whether they will promote Antuna soon, despite the defensive struggles. A lot of us were surprised that he didn’t begin the year at AA, particularly after all the alternate site hype for him and him getting added to the 40-man. But man, he got off to a terrible start this year. As for his defense, I’ve wondered whether they would reach a point where they might start looking at him in the outfield. They don’t have anything set in LF with the big club going forward.
